A spicy second-chance romance between two international jewel thieves!

Five years ago, Celeste and her partner-in-crime Magnus were on a job that went horribly wrong and they haven’t spoken since. When their former crew leader passes away unexpectedly, they are thrown back together for one more heist.

I love a good heist story and the action sequences in here were great! I will say that I was genuinely not expecting this book to be as spicy as it was! Respectfully, these two spent more time getting freaky than planning their heist, I’m sure of it. And good for them, honestly.

I could have used a little more development for some of our side characters, especially since Reid seems to be setting up the potential for a follow-up novel. I was also less interested in the parts that detailed the former crew leader’s journal entries; those interludes were just not my favorite.

Thank you to the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my review!

thank you to netgalley and canary street press for this eARC!

i am glad i took the time to go back and finish this book. it was fun to read.

overall, their relationship was pretty well developed. they had a solid past that was revealed at what i felt was an appropriate pace. i wish they had had a real conversation about stockholm, because to me it felt more like a “forget about it and move on” ending than a “we’ve discussed and solved our past problems” ending. however, i do think celeste’s development, as well as magnus’s, was handled well. it did feel like they understood their own faults better by the end of the book.

i thoroughly enjoyed the side characters. i would have liked slightly more development for santi, but he was definitely a fun character. i really liked magnus’s relationship with lawrence; i liked all of their relationships with lawrence actually—it was adorable.

i appreciated that the heist was fairly easy to follow and didn’t get too technical, that would’ve felt out of place and made me lose a bit of interest.

all in all, i enjoyed this book and it was a fun change of pace.

Thank you so much to Canary Street Press & Netgalley for providing an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are still my own.

I was so excited to pick this up - I really want a heist/adventure romance I love. But this one just didn't quite land.

I thought the main characters had fantastic chemistry. And I loved the idea of two agents needing to work together for one final mysterious task.

But all the MCs had was good chemistry. I didn't feel as though there was nothing deeper. Second chance romances are tricky because you need to convince the reader of the depth of their connection when it happened entirely off page.

And this just didn't ever capture that. I kept thinking - but WHY do you like each other? Because all you're talking about is how attractive the other is.

I also didn't find the heist portions to be engaging enough to carry the plot. There was soooo much planning and moving around and it started to feel like the plot was just happening to them. Not like they were creating it.

I've really enjoyed other books from this author, this one just wasn't for me in the end.

I've heard good things about Charish Reid and a second chance romance between two thieves seemed like a good place to start!

Synopsis according to GJ: Dr. Celeste St. Peter has a secret. She's spent much of her life as a thief. Ballgowns, international travels, scaling buildings, all of it. After a job gone wrong, Celeste left her own team and went out on her own. Five years later, Celeste receive word that her mentor, Dr. Doris Grant has tragically died and has a final request: One last job with the old crew.

Unfortunately, the old crew include the stoic (Some might call frigid) Magnus Larsson, her old flame. That's fine. Celeste is professional enough to do her job and ignore the sexual tension and lingering stares between her and Magnus, right? RIGHT?!

Review: So I have weird feelings about this book. Don't get me wrong, I loved elements of this book! The heists, the quips, the crew interacting with each other after the disastrous last job, etc. I really enjoy it. Reid absolutely nailed the particular inner conflict for Black women of being hyper independent and struggling with letting someone take care of you. We also get to see three generations of Black femmes who are hungry for something more and the dangerous ways they might overcorrect because of their mentors' experiences and that just hit for me.

Throughout the book, we get diary entries from Celeste's mentor, Doris starting at the start of her life as a thief. Soon, a parallel between Doris and Celeste emerge and it makes the mission even more meaningful. Initally, Doris sending them on this last job feels like an act of vanity and slowly revealed to be a helpful nudge to the people she cares about the most. And yes, a little bit of vanity in there too. Allow a dying woman her proclivities, dang it.

Another thing I love is how Reid talks about intimacy in this book. Often when we think of intimacy, we think solely about sex but here, she touches on the more platonic side of it. The knowing looks, the things we only share with kindred spirits, even just cuddling and letting ourselves be vulnerable. While Celeste and Magnus are very familiar with each other in the bedroom, we quickly realize how little they share with each other outside of it. It's jarring when we see their chemistry and feelings while not knowing basic things about the other.

And that brings me to my issues with this book because I didn't really care about their romance. Yeah, the spice was flowing but I just wasn't feeling it. There's a scene in the book where Magnus meets Celeste's protégé and after interacting with him, she says "I don't get it" and I yelled in my head "Thank god it's not just me". I just didn't vibe with the romance parts.

I wished we got less Sex-Intimacy and talking about how much they wanted to sleep with other and more Platonic intimacy. There was literally a scene where things were heating up and I just didn't care. Which makes me sad because I like caring! I cared more about the romance between the secondary characters than the main. I'm not sure if it was my feelings about Magnus himself or my mood but I just wasn't feeling it.

That said, the roleplay towards the end? With them letting their real feelings show and be vulnerable with each other? Nicely done, chef's kiss.

Overall, I give this book a wobbly 4 stars. I largely stayed for the crew and the heists. That said, I do want to try another book from Reid and see if we started on the wrong note

TW: Off page death (Cancer), off page parental death, racism, sexism, non-fatal drowning, onpage sex scenes including some with BDSM elements, brief gun violence, brief blood, brief drug use

As an avid adventure and action movie fan- I LOVED this "thief romance"!

The story was so well meshed between planning the heist, traveling, the romance and the chemistry. Celeste and Magnus were partners 5 years ago, and haven't been able to forget one another. But is trusting a steamy "in the sheets" partner enough to make their heisting "on the streets" successful?

The Scavenger Hunt, the different hide outs, the bugs in their ears... I couldn't get enough of the action. And with the two of them always seeming to find themselves in each others bed afterwords... the steam was perfect for my romance book lover's heart.

As they made their way across Europe and step by step got closer to the final heist... I couldn't help but enjoy the way that Celeste worked through her grief of losing her mentor, her self discovery as she worked to let herself trust others and not just steamroll through a job so no one else gets hurt.

Overall, it was a delight and I loved it. Definitely recommend.

A Thrilling Heist with a Touch of Romance
Jewel Me Twice is a captivating blend of heist thriller and romantic suspense. Charish Reid masterfully weaves a tale of passion, intrigue, and high-stakes adventure.
The story follows Celeste St. Pierre, a former jewel thief turned antique store owner, and Magnus Larsson, a brilliant geologist with a knack for creating replicas. When they reunite to honor their mentor's final wish and pull off the heist of the century, sparks fly and old wounds are reopened.
Reid's writing is both engaging and evocative. The fast-paced plot, coupled with the sizzling chemistry between Celeste and Magnus, keeps readers hooked from start to finish. The European backdrop provides a stunning setting for the thrilling escapades and romantic interludes.
While the characters are well-developed, the emotional depth could have been explored further. The focus on the heist and the romantic tension sometimes overshadows the character development. Nevertheless, Jewel Me Twice is a thrilling ride that will satisfy fans of heist novels and romantic suspense alike.

Jewel Me Twice was a fun romance between two jewelry thieves. Magnus and Celeste were thieves under the same mentor, but both ended up on different paths. Their paths intersect again upon her death when she organizes one final heist from beyond the grave. Working in proximity, they rekindle their romance and realize their feelings for each other.

An absolute amazing book! I had a lot of fun reading it. The chemistry between the leads is so palpable and I was very into them from the start, wanting them to get together asap!! The heist aspect of the book feels a lot underdeveloped in comparison to the romance, which is an issue I can let slide cause I had fun reading this, but just to manage expectations, I would say go into this as if it's solely a romance and it will not disappoint!!

Omg okay so this book had me hooked! The chemistry and tension between Celeste and Magnus is incredible, and I was rooting for them so hard (in the heist and in love)

This is a sweet romance for those who like some tension but want heartfelt moments as well. The story follows the journey of the protagonist as she navigates personal challenges and the pursuit of her dreams.

The novel explores themes of love and identity, with some engaging moments that kept me turning the pages. I appreciated the portrayal of family dynamics. Reid’s writing is warm and inviting, though I found some parts of the plot a bit predictable. While the characters are likable, I wished for deeper development to make their struggles feel even more impactful.
