As is typical with a painting book, this starts off with a technical section which goes over the types of supplies and tools you’ll need. Geethu recommends starting with high quality paints & papers and a number of brushes. She recommends beginning with tubes of primary colors in your chosen line and then adding the colors you mix most frequently. This is useful advice and a web search will yield your brand’s primary color options. The author uses red, blue and yellow as primaries for the color theory section. This is unusual, as most use magenta, cyan and yellow for color mixing for purer color mixing. I also find the author’s color naming in the color theory section a bit confusing. They reference ruby red which is not a color listed on their color palette. This might cause some confusion. They recommend starting with primaries and then list 36 colors in the palette they use for projects within the book. Roughly half the book is technical information which can be a little overwhelming for a new watercolorist.
The 14 projects are clearly illustrated and include the reference photo used as inspiration. This is particularly useful, in my opinion, for new drawers to see how the photo was simplified in the drawing and painting. The title promises vibrant watercolor and you definitely get that, although not in a traditional method.
There’s some really useful information within the pages of this book and some of dubious use. I would include the projects in this book within a watercolorist’s exploration but would not use this book as a sole reference for technical information.
I received an ARC from NetGalley.
A well-done instruction book about watercolor, nothing extraordinary but very good for beginners. The Quarto books are always recommended for their semplicity, usability, clear structure, very user- and beginner-friendly.
Geethu Chandramohan gives a wonderful introduction into painting with water colours that's absolutely beginner friendly. She addresses everything from colour theory to composition and mixing. As someone who is somewhat talented with acrylics but has always struggled with water colours this little book with exemplary tutorials to follow was godsent. I just tried two of the examples and so much of the theory translated into practice, like it never did for me before <3
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this watercolor book.
The first half of the book discusses paper, paints, brushes, and other tools useful in watercolor painting. I thought the information on perspective was very useful. Also, the author’s discussion and examples related to light and shadows was helpful.
The second half of the book gave landscape examples for practice. Her examples use very vibrant colors and I might consider toning them down a bit to more reflect my style of painting. You may feel differently.
The instructions were clear and the step-by-step photos were very helpful.
I would recommend this book to those that dabble in watercolors, especially if you are interested in information regarding painting landscapes.
I’ve wanted to dabble in watercolor painting for a while and this book is an excellent resource for a novice. It gave thorough information ranging from types of paper to painting with perspective. I definitely recommend this for anyone who is interested in taking up watercolor painting.
This book is excellent for beginner watercolourists. What I really like about this ook, is that is goes beyond the supplies and methods, but has highlighted boxes with tips and recommendations from the author
The book begins with comprehensive guides to supplies, methods, colour theory and tone, but in bite-size sections that are easy to navigate and use as reference. I really liked the advice about the types of paint to buy, especially as I have been struggling with a type of chalkiness upon drying, but now I know how to avoid it!
The projects guide you step by step through the creation of number of different scenes, all using varying levels of tone, light and shadow, but all stunningly vivid and absolutely enchanting
Thank you very much to NetGalley for this wonderful eARC, my review is left voluntarily
Fantastic watercolor book! Everything from color mixing, perspective and more. I’ve been painting for 4 years and still learned things. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this.
This book was great! It gave so
Many tips for water coloring painting. My daughter love art and I can’t wait till I can purchase this for her. They take a picture and show you how to do it in steps.
I used to draw and paint in college but then life got in the way. I have recently tried to pick up the hobby again and this book is just perfect to get me started again. It is packed with information and projects. Great book.
I was skeptical after reading the intro, which I found awkward and reminiscent of those long articles that don't say much of anything with a whole lot of words so you see a lot of ads, but I quickly realized this is a truly excellent watercolor book.
I have always been baffled at how one would get from point a (reference image) to point b (finished painting) for watercolor and always just shrugged and gave it up as something I'd never be able to do after numerous failed attempts. After reading this, I am energized to try working through Chandramohan's examples myself. Her step by step approach just makes sense to me where no other watercolor approach has before.
This book also offers a comprehensive look at various techniques and explanations of the different types of watercolor paint and paper and how they behave, as well as a crash course in color theory, perspective, and composition.
I especially liked the step by step tutorials for drawing waves, water, and sky and will be attempting those first.
Maybe I'll finally manage to finish a watercolor painting that I actually like.
*Thanks to NetGalley, Quarto, and Walter Foster Publishing for providing an early copy for review.
Unfortunately I only received the cover. Once the full book is available on Netgalley I will update my review. Thank you
I recently watched an online seminar about water colors and was supposed to get a recording afterwards, which I was very much looking forward to. The recording never materialized and thanks to this beautiful book, it no longer matters. The tools, watercolor recommendations, and color theory explanation are right in line with the seminar and I'm excited to give watercolors another go.
The various landscapes are broken down in steps, making it seem far less intimidating for a beginning. I don't "think like an artist" so that innate ability to understand how to layer in order to reach the final product is not something I'm good at doing. Similar to a "Paint Night" type session, this breaks it down into easy-to-understand steps that gives me hope that I can enjoy this hobby instead of simply struggling through it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster for the opportunity to review this stunning book!
5 out of 5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
Excellent tutorial on watercolor painting that starts with material, as well as specific recommendations. For example paper quality is discussed and how long paint vibrancy will be maintained based on the type of paper you use.
Different painting techniques are discussed, all with beautiful results such as blooming, with examples given, as well as how particular results can be obtained using household items such acs a toothbrush, salt, and plastic wrap.
Lastly, you are shown how to paint specific landscapes, such as sunsets, oceans, woods, as well as trees, dolphins and more.
I would have readily given this five stars if it wasn't for an error I found quite confusing originally that ai hope is corrected by release time, I believe paint PENS and half PENS were being referenced, as I have used such pens, not paint PANS and paint half PANS. I hope this is corrected pre-release so this wonderful book can be given it's due, as it is perfect for budding watercolor artists and it covers everything you need to get started.
As mentioned by other reviewers, only the cover of this book could be accessed. I hope the publisher rectifies this matter. The paintings on the cover are gorgeous and I was so looking forward to seeing the inside.
I will update my review as soon as I am able to see the whole book.
Unfortunately only the cover was available so I am not able to review the contents at this time. I am happy to review with the entire download is available.
Having just invested in some lovely watercolours, this seemed like an ideal way to venture into my new hobby. However, unfortunately, the download of the book only shows the front and back cover at the moment. Hopefully it will update to being the full book soon so I can give a more up to date review as it looks great from the description and the cover.
