I've only read one other Emily Henry book but this did not disappoint! I am not a huge romance reader but I read Funny Story super quickly because I was so engrosed in the character's lives. I was really rooting for Daphen (the protagonist), and adored hearing about her work as a librarian. I even welled up at the end!
I absolutely loved this book. The characters were hilarious, their plights very relatable, and the plot was very well paced. Emily Henry manoeuvres us through very real, raw emotions and fears through absolutely hilarious banter and internal dialogue, and the chemistry between these characters had me giggling and crying. This could not have been more perfect
Another incredible Emily Henry! I was very excited to see this pop up in my inbox and knew I had to read straight away. Loved the dynamic between the characters, and the funny journey they went on!
Emily Henry is the Queen of the romance genre right now and this is her new best.
Daphne has just been left by her fiancé weeks before the wedding, and her only option for a roommate in a short notice is Miles, who girlfriend just left him for Daphnes fiancé. Between trying to cheer each other up from their breakups, and getting a little revenge … their forced proximity grows to a very unlikely friendship.
Just like every one of her other romance novels, the characters are fleshed out and real and the chemistry between them is to die for. I think what makes Emily Henry’s novels stand out is how she includes really emotional subplots and difficult real-life struggles for these. There is so much substance and depth in the story that the emotional moments hit harder.
But the reason why I think this is Emily Henry’s best work yet, is because (true to its name) it’s incredibly funny. I can’t name a book I have laughed at more. The banter between Miles and Daphne is snappy and funny. I think uniquely to her other romances, Miles and Daphne are an unlikely pair which only made their interactions more laugh out loud hilarious.
You will absolutely fall in love with these characters and this story, and if you haven’t been convinced on Emily Henry yet, this is the one to grab.
Loved the premise and loved the execution. The characters are funny and have amazing chemistry. The only thing I wasn't totally sold on was how long the third act went on for, and the sheer amount of miscommunication that resulted in that. But otherwise, a really fun read.
Loved this - maybe my favourite Emily Henry couple yet. So believable and love how their flaws come out. Really enjoyed, have already been recommending.
A new book from Emily Henry always makes me happy, and Happy Story doesn't disappoint with its heart-warming romance that promises to pull on your heart strings too.
Daphne has been left floundering after her recent break-up from fiancé Peter. Her only solution to try and find her feet is a new roommate who just so happens to be her ex-fiance's very new ex-boyfriend! But while he does understand her predicament uniquely, the two are polar opposites.
What they do have in common is wanting to get back at their exes, and so they hatch a plan to make them jealous by pretending to be dating. What could go wrong...well they could start to fall in love.
Although the book is filled with funny parts there is also a very real heartache to the story that will leave you rooting for the new pair to rise above their differences and challenges to find a way forward.
Funny Story is our fifth book by Emily Henry, and our love affair with her stories continues. We adore her characters, they’re so warm, charming, and relatable, and Daphne, Miles and their pals have cemented themselves in our hearts, along with so many others Emily Henry has created. Funny Story did convey a somewhat, for want of a better word, morose undertone, however, Emily Henry managed to perfectly balance the sadness, the emotional and the funny in a such a beautifully harmonic way.
For Daphne Vincent and Miles Nowak, their lives are turned upside down, everything they thought they knew is brought into question when Peter, Daphne’s fiancée and Petra, Miles’s girlfriend, decide to take the relationship beyond friendship. Moving in together and leaving Daphne and Miles heartbroken and becoming roommates.
When Daphne uprooted her life to follow Peter to Waning Bay, Michigan, she saw a life before her, one very different to her life now. As a librarian at Waning Bay library, broken hearted Daphne decides she will see out the summer, to complete her heart project, the Read a Thon for the children. Returning to her one constant, her Mum. Miles Nowak, nursing his own broken heart has other plans. He decides to show Daphne the parts of Waning Bay she hasn’t experienced, and hope she falls in love with the town enough to stay.
We fell in love with Miles, Daphne, their friends, and adored experiencing the beauty of Waning Bay with Daphne. Waning Bay became a character all on its own. We dipped our toes in the sea, we became excited about the Traverse City Cherry Festival. We wanted to pack our bags and move there!
Will the sweet gentle Miles convince Daphne her place is in Michigan, will she fall in love with more than Waning Bay? Will their hearts heal. Well, you’ll love every minute of finding out all the answers. Another winner from this fabulous author.
This books was amazing i enjoyed it immensely, the characters and world felt so realistic, along with the struggles the protagonists were dealing with. I loved the way the romance progressed, and how the family issues were dealt with. I also loved the nick miller vibes miles was giving off.
(4.5 stars) Wow. Emily Henry has done it again. I'll admit, I'd been in a massive reading slump for two months, and somehow I finished this book in two days. I was absolutely obsessed and drawn to these realistic, yet mature characters. I think I can find romances really difficult when every choice of every character seems dumb, or misled, or frustratingly stupid. And whilst that's bound to happen once in any romance, I think I loved Funny Story so much, because these characters weren't dumb. They both felt very emotionally mature and had wise and comforting conversations that genuinely made me respect and desire the characters and their relationship. I think Miles might be the best book boyfriend that Emily Henry has ever written, and I think that both Miles and Daphne are such relatable and complicated characters which really makes this novel feel more than a simple romance. However, it's still so fun, and heartwarming and easy to read. Once again, an amazing read from Emily Henry (thank you for blessing the Earth with your writing).
Told with Emily Henry’s signature warmth and wit, this adorable rom-com encourages you to keep hope alive, even when life throws its hardest curveballs.
We meet Daphne at a serious low point in her life, just after her fiancé leaves her for his childhood best friend, taking their house and her dreams of a wedding and big, stable family with him. Suddenly without a home, she begins a house share agreement with Miles, the ex-boyfriend of the woman who stole her fiancé. As they help each other through the heartbreak, they begin to realise the importance of friends who show up for each other, the value of vulnerability and that maybe they both deserved better all along.
I love Daphne’s dry humour and sarcasm, and Miles’s genuine and selfless friendliness. The chemistry between the central couple is realistic yet charged, balancing moments of sensitive conversation and care with scenes of passionate desire and longing.
I also love the group of close family and friendly locals who become their support network, each bringing out the best in the central couple in unique and fun ways. Emily Henry is an expert in showing the value of every person. The friendships in her books thrive when the characters appreciate their loved ones not just because of what they do but because of who they are.
If you’re looking for a deep yet feel-good romance with a likeable cast and quotes that will encourage you, I can’t recommend this one enough.
When Peter dumps Daphne, she moves into her ex-fiancé's new fiancée's ex boyfriend Miles' apartment. Brilliantly written with laugh out loud moments, it's a story of how they both move on with their lives. Emily Henry never fails to please.
I can’t put into words how much I loved this book! Funny story is the perfect balance of funny, feel good and emotional. I genuinely felt awful for Daphne and I was completely invested in her relationship with Miles from start to finish. Funny Story delivers exactly what it promises and I will definitely be recommending it on release to anyone who loves romance novels!
If you know me, you'll know that Emily Henry's books have had me in a chokehold since I read Beach Read three and a half years ago. I've devoured and loved all of her stories since then, and was lucky to read Book Lovers (my fave) and Happy Place early too. But no arc has made me quite as excited as Funny Story.
This book had me kicking my feet and squealing like a little kid, there is so much joy and love contained in these pages and it came to be at the perfect point in my life. This review is spoiler free but I would recommend going into the book with as little knowledge as you can - I went in almost completely blind and had a blast!
Funny Story is just as addictive as Emily Henry's previous works. She pulls you in with a (sometimes scarily) main character you can't help but love, hooks you further with incredible chemistry and quippy dialogue, then before you know it the cast of real and lovable and messy characters have your heart in a death grip.
Funny Story contains so much joy and warmth, reading it felt like such a great escape, but it doesn't let you off easy. There's beautiful prose and lots to chew on.
To me, Emily Henry writes the best relationships, challenged only by Nora Ephron (Henry still wins). Her leads are the most entertaining, realistic, swoon worthy, hilarious and lovable characters possible. If her books were solely centred around the relationships they would still be my favourite based on the dialogue alone (helped by the lack of annoying and predictable tropes), but her books also pack an emotional punch every time. Whether she's dealing with grief, identity, friendship, making mistakes or rebuilding your life, these topics are always explored in such beautiful ways.
I LOVE EMHEN!
The excitement I felt when I opened my inbox and this was waiting for me was unparalleled, following along as the hype train just keeps building is such a privilege and I feel so lucky to have been part of the journey since You & Me On Vacation slid onto my NetGalley TBR.
Funny Story is magical. I don't know how she does it! I was totally whisked away to small town Michigan, I forgot all of my responsibilities... and I spent the entire time reading this with a grin on my face and my feet kicking with joy. I chose to stop reading to prolong the experience which is highly unusual and it was SO GOOD!
Miles is unfairly hot, I didn't expect to grow to love him so much from the initial descriptions of his character. His tattoos and action films wormed their way into my heart and I don't know if any of Emily Henry's other MMCs can even compare. Daphne was such a fabulous narrator, I loved living in her head for a while and experiencing small town Michigan through her eyes. The library team are incredible and I loved the community spirit that just resonates through the entire book.
I didn't think I would love a story involving so many complicated relationships, all the exes hanging around wasn't my idea of a great time but now I don't know why I worried. All of her stories are brilliant and they always will be. I devoured this book even with my forced break and I now want to reread all of Emily's books because I cannot get enough!
5 stars
Thank you so much to Viking, Penguin Random House and NetGalley for my e-ARC of this book, my review will be up on Instagram on pub day xxx
I've yet to meet an Emily Henry tale I don't love, and ‘Funny Story’ is no exception. As always, I was completely immersed in the characters, setting and plot - to such an extent that I felt quite sad when the book ended. It's fun and uplifting, but there's a lot of depth here too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and am eternally excited for whatever Emily brings us next.
I loved this book!
Daphne ends up moving in with Miles which is complicated as he is her ex-fiancé’s, new girlfriend’s ex!! She is adamant she will only stay until she has completed an important work event and then she will be moving out of town and away from all the memories. However, her relationship with Miles develops from flatmates to friends, to something more.
I think this is Emily Henry’s sexiest book yet, the tension between Daphne and Miles was brilliant. Their interactions were my favourite part of the book, you really see their relationship develop and it is easy to see how good for each other they are.
I loved the fact that Daphne is a librarian and books are woven throughout the story.
Funny Story is sexy and romantic, Emily Henry just does it so well!
Emily Henry never fails to disappoint, I finished this book in one sitting and refused to put it down until it was finished.
I think this might be my favourite book of hers so far...
100% worth the read and I cannot wait for her future book releases, I can't read them quick enough!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
I just reviewed Funny Story by Emily Henry. #FunnyStory #NetGalley
I really loved this book! This was a real return to my favourite Emily Henry book ‘Booklovers’. Cannot wait for everyone I know to read this so I can talk about it.
Emily Henry 100% so freaking good. If I've said it once I've said it 1000 times, she is incredible at exploring human relationships on so many levels. Every time I read, I learn so deeply what it is like to be someone else completely.
