The world was beautiful and cozy with perfect witchy vibes. I loved the story which felt very unique and captivating. The characters by themselves were great, however, I did find their banter a bit on the dry side, especially at the beginning. The writing was great, the story flowed easy and I found myself engrossed and not even focusing on how much I’ve read.
What was a little bit disappointing to me was the ending. The slow burn build up was so good and the way they finally came together felt so anti-climatic and almost icky in a way. It was a good part of the story but still felt off. I also didn’t approve or understand how Addie simply forgave him for burning down the bookstore because his feelings were hurt? Like, I get it, he was in his villain era and I’m all for that but it lasted for all of 5 seconds and he didn’t suffer any consequences for his actions, on the contrary he was rewarded?
Overall I enjoyed this story a lot and the magic sprinkled in it (the flowers, the mirrors, the magic books!) and I would love to continue the series.
First of all, I want to thank the publishers and NetGalley for giving me an e-ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Now, let's begin.
When I read the blurb of the book, I was intrigued. The story has potential. It gave 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' vibes. Yes, it's not entirely perfect but it was a charming read.
I was drawn to this one because of the colourful cover, and it sounded like a fun and cosy read.
This was such a great fake engagement read. I loved the world Amy Boyles has created, and it has been set up perfectly as series. I cannot wait for the continuation.
I have to admit, at one point I wasn't sure how Addie and Feylin were going to go from enemies to lovers because of how much they disliked each other and how determined they were to get away from each other. But Amy Boyles made it work and I will very much read the following books once their available.
This book has;
🩷Fake engagement
🩷Forced proximity
🩷Enemies to lovers
🩷Grumpy x Sunshine
All in all, it's a great cosy read.
The first in a new fantasy romance series, this book contains a grumpy fae king that accidentally gets engaged to a magic-less witch. Her only "power" is the ability to matchmake people with the perfect book, while he hates books. As they fake date, this enemies to lovers pair finds out that more than joining magic might make them a perfect couple after all. The book includes cute banter, some major drama, and an adorable nephew. I spent a day immersed in the fun world Amy Boyles has created here and am looking forward to reading about the remaining sisters as the family schemes to increase their declining magic.
Book lover, Addie ends up tied to a fae king, Feylin, after faking having powers. After finding out her marriage hangs her families future in the balance. The best part, a grumpy x sunshine romance!
Now I enjoyed the atmosphere and world building that this book had. I read someone else’s review where they mentioned it being an Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy situation and I absolutely ate that up. The chemistry and witty exchanges between the characters were so fun to experience.
This is such a fun easy read and I can’t wait for any next ones that may come out!
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC
Another new to me author and I loved meeting Addison and Feylin! This is like a gender reversed Seven Brides for Seven Brothers with magic!
Addison is the eldest of the 7 Thornrose sisters. She has had as much luck in romance as she's had with her magic. She moved to Nashville for the sake of her sanity. She knew her family loved her, even as a magical dud, but she didn't love herself. When her grandmother suddenly dies she gets zapped back home and given the news that to protect the family magic she and her sisters have to be married.
Feylin is the king of Fae and the guardian of his cousins child. He loves the kid but also has a burning desire for revenge against the people he holds responsible for the death of his wife. When he meets Addison he sees a chance to help her out whilst he gets some revenge.
Addison is such a sweetheart. She's a booklover, kind, snarkily sarcastic, too hard on herself and a great big sister. She's learned to essentially be human in a magically aware world. Feylin is broody, arrogant, generous and protective. But he can also be quick to jump to assumptions and it bites him on the butt!
The wisecracking banter and insults are on point. Ryals is cute as a button and a scene-stealer. Trawick has got to be a match for one of the sisters - he's too awesome to just stay as Feylin's bestie. All the Thornrose sisters were awesome in their individuality but I could have happily thumped the parents for leaving Addison in the dark!
Some of the villains get a suitable bad ending, but Edward I felt got off lightly - I needed him to go through more!
A modern day romantasy about a magic-less witch, Addison, who falls into a fake engagement of convenience with a fae king, Feylin. Tragedy has struck both these characters and they are not ready to welcome love in their lives. However, being in forced proximity (thanks to fae binding magic) makes them open up to each other bringing out the best in them both. And though reluctant, they grow feelings towards one another.
Their meet cute is unconventional but humorous and I appreciated that they were both conscious of the sexual tension between them never going through moments of fighting those specific feelings or being in denial. Which, causes for some spicy moments ;)
The pacing was a bit too fast for me. The major conflict at the end is intense but not too long after, everything gets resolve, quick and easy. I also found the storyline with Addison’s family losing the matriarch of their family wanting. At the start of the novel, Addison comes home because her grandmother has died which spirals the main plot. So then, the grief of the family kind of gets skipped over. I’d be excited to see more of the dynamic of Addison’s family and their relationship with magic in the next books.
Overall, a fun and quick romance read with magical beings! Can’t wait to read the next installment which promises more of the enemies to lovers trope!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this eARC to share my honest review.
Here are a few things I loved about this book:
- The dual POV: I like getting both Feylin and Addie's take on things
- cozy romance
- slow burn and enemies-to-lovers
- set in modern day... I wish more fae books did that
However, there was a bunch i didn't like:
- The book started about strong(ish) with writing but then fell apart in the middle.
- Addie's POV got annoying - almost cringy
But it was a cozy enough romance where I found myself reading it easily. It's a solid 3.5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Paranormal romances are just so fun to me, I love the traditional romance tropes mixed into the magical world and how they balance each other out and give a fresh light to my favorite tropes.
Feylin and Addie are faking an engagement after magic forces binds them together, and I loved the little rules surrounding it. The breaking of it was so emotional and I loved that plot line. The twists and turns when the families secrets came out were shocking and Feylin’s reaction made the last quarter of this book fly as I wanted to see how it would all play out!
I loved this book and can’t wait to see what’s next!
3.5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
The title and cover instantly caught my attention.
This was a fun, cute, magical story! It kept my interested and for the most part I really enjoyed the characters!
Tropes:
💫 Fake engagement
💫 Enemies to lovers
💫 Forced proximity
💫 Slow burn
💫 Fae and witches
Spice: 🌶️
The story focuses on Addie and Feylin. Addie is a witch without magic while Feylin is a fae king. Witches and the fae do not get along in this world but Addie and Feylin are both being pressure to marry they decide to team up and help each other out and have a fake engagement. Feylin claims he accidentally bonds him and Addie which means they are not able to be far apart, so she needs to go back to his the castle with him. As the book goes on Feylin and Addie become closer and we are able to see some of their past and how they are both able to grow but both of them are keeping many secrets. The story also had both Addie and Feylin’s POV which I enjoyed.
Some things that I personally did not like was there was wayyyy to much miscommunication between Feylin and Addie. I also think there was a little too much inner dialogue especially for Addie, at times it was really cringy. Also, I found the story predictable and I was able to guess every plot twist.
The epilogue left it open for the possibility of another book that I think would focus more on Addie’s sister. Addie’s sisters were entertaining so I would read another book if there is one!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for this arc! All opinions are my own.
Cute story line that was an easy quick read. Fun. Light. Main character is a book lover (which I love reading in books! Kind of like inception for readers) . Romantsy but make it funny!
3.5 stars
From the premise, How to Fake it With A Fae sounds like exactly the type of book that I would love and enjoy reading. The whole enemies-to-lovers, fake dating/marriage of convenience is exactly my type of read and for the most part, I did enjoy the book. Addie and Feylin did certainly have some good chemistry and their banter was pretty great. There's also some really enjoyable spicy moments between the two that leaves you wanting more.
However, the writing style, at least to me, felt slightly strange. The opening was pretty great and the first few chapters were so much fun to read, but somewhere in the middle it kind of tapered off, but it picked up again towards the end. So, it made for an interesting reading experience, but also took away some of my enjoyment of reading this book.
However, I won't lie. I quite loved this world and with the way things ended, I am sure there will be more books in this series so I am looking forward to reading those!
This was such a cute, fun, enemies-to-lovers, fake engagement romance. I requested this book for the cover, but devoured it because of the story. The world building was unique, blending a magical fae/witch world with the modern US. Set in Tennessee, the author even added some Southern flair. I adored the characters. Addison and Feylin are so good together. They are both wounded in their own way, but together, they bring out the best in each other. Addison's sisters (who will all have their own stories eventually) are so sweet and supportive. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Feylin and his young cousin, who he is raising. This book definitely checked all my cozy romantasy boxes, and was as magical as the cover is beautiful. I devoured this book in two days, and would highly recommend it to anyone.
this just wasn’t it for me. I was completely bored from the beginning. I thought i was going to like this based on the cover and synopsis.
Unfortunately this was a no go for me.
This book was such a fun read! It was easy and light, but had all the right elements for a cozy fantasy romance. I was hooked from the very beginning and read this in one sitting - literally. I couldn't put it down!
This gave me Legally Blonde meets Bridgerton vibes, which I absolutely loved, mixed with fake dating, fae, and witches. Addison has had terrible luck with dating, but it seems like that's a problem of the past.... until what she thought was a proposal is... yep - you guessed it - a breakup. Humiliated and upset, she's forced to return home to deal with a family emergency. And this is when she runs into Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome.
Feylin is broody and determined to keep love at arms length, but his people need a queen. The magic in his realm is fading and only a queen is able to solve that minor problem. Through a momentary lapse in judgement and a cruel twist of fate, Addison winds up as his fake fiancee.
Secrets, betrayal, tension, and a lot of delicious banter ensue, burning oh so slowly until the emotion is just too much. Without spoiling anything, this is where I deducted half a star. I personally would have liked to see the scene play out differently, but it was heart-wrenching and beautiful in its own way.
This book is the first in an interconnected standalone, and has a HEA. Perfect for fans of slow burn, cozy romance, broody fae, and snarky FMCs.
The book is an easy read, but I think this book will have different rating because if you read it expecting something strong like a big plot twist or something you will be disappointed.
So if you want to like it go with no expectations.
In the first 40% of the book it was fine, then it start to take to different turns.
And after 60% I dnf it, because for me I was expecting a lot of emotions but unfortunately that didn’t happen.
First off thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Addison is a magicless witch and she’s been having a horrible day. Her boyfriend decides to call it quits, a family emergency pulls her home and before she can even make it a few steps through her hometown she pukes on a handsome strangers shoes. It couldn’t get worse from there right? Wrong. After running into the handsome stranger again he comes to her rescue and announces their engagement to spare Addie not only embarrassment but to help her family. However, this stranger turns out to be Fae and the king to boot. But Feylin the stranger has his own problems swirling and together him and Addie have to navigate this engagement and their growing attraction towards one another. Can a magicless witch and a Fae King fake it till they make it? Or will they blacken like a dead rose?
This book was a fun and cute read! I was instantly drawn in by the bright colors of the cover and the title. I’m always drawn to books with fae and/or witches and the fact that this is a romance made it all the more alluring. Even more so I found myself drawn to these characters in a way. Cheering on Addie and Feylin as they interacted and rolling my eyes at their mishaps.
However, there were some things that made this fall flat for me. For one it felt a little too instalove for me. Without saying too much, the speed of things was really fast paced and not in an action packed way so to speak. But I felt there was a lot of jumping from one issue to the next without really much context. Furthermore, I felt that the lore and world building behind all the magical rules and beings could have been explained in depth a little more. Instead it felt very glossed over and made it seem like we should already know the rules. I get that there’s supposed to be some build up to certain reveals but there was no explanation as to why things were the way that they were. I also have a love hate relationship with the miscommunication trope, and the way it was used here could have been avoiaded simply if the there was communication between the characters. Granted I know this is why it’s called miscommunication but with how quickly everything went down between the witches and fae so much could have been avoided between a third and act breakup with Addie and Feylin. Also, the big reveal didn’t really have any build up. I would never have guessed that the ‘villain’ was who it was because there were no clues and they appeared only three to four times on the page.
But despite these things this book was still a cute read. I enjoyed Addie’s ability to pick the perfect book for a person and at times the book gave off Beauty and the Beast vibes! (Spoiler: the library scene!) I am curious to see how the rest of this series will pan out. It seems each book will focus on a different one of Addie’s sister’s, and since there are a total of 7 girls we will be in for a ride. Especially with how this book’s epilogue ended!
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5)

I was instantly interested in this book by the cover when I saw it on Netgalley and the description made me request the ARC.
Addie is a witch with no powers and Feylin is a grump fae king. Addie might not have magic, but her family owns a magically book store that allows you to literally jump into the story. Addie and Feylin accidentally end up engaged and bound by an ancient spell at the ball her family threw to marry off Addie and her sisters to save their magic. Their pairing was not easily accepted as the fae and the witches don’t like each other and Addie and Feylin are two very different people. This book follows the story of their fake engagement while Addie is forced to live in the fae castle with Feylin due to the spell. They both face ups and downs throughout the story, but eventually both find out the truth and find their HEA.
The story kept me interested throughout the whole book. Addie and Feylin were good characters with their own pasts and struggles. I loved how it was set in modern day with modern technology. Most fantasy’s are set in very different times so it was a nice change. It was a little slow moving at times, but not to the point where I ever became uninterested. I usually don’t read many slow burns, but I didn’t mind the slow build up in this book. It made sense for the characters and their story. The epilogue leaves the story open for a continuation so I’m interested to see where this goes next. Definitely check this book out if you like any of the main troupes or a modern day set fantasy.
I LOVED this story! It felt so unique and fun. I loved Addie’s problem, Feylin’s problem, their problems together, the suspense, and the happy ending! The information revealed about the big secret was revealed in a great pace to keep the book intriguing. Feylin’s acts of love were PERFECT I literally cried when they were at the tailor’s. So many bits of dialogue and inner feelings were so beautiful and perfect. The author captured actual emotions in her writing and I felt just as joyous, heartbroken, and loved as the characters did. The only thing I didn’t love was the very very end in the epilogue (won’t display so it isn’t spoiled!) but it reads like it is set up for a sequel. I’m definitely interested to see what happens next, and the next story may make me love the very end as well!
Excellent read. Really enjoyable. Exquisitely written with relatable and likable characters and beautiful world-building. 100% would recommend to all of my friends and fellow book lovers.
