One Wrong Word was clever, but rather than capture my attention, it left me relatively bored and impatient to reach the end. "No surprises," crisis management Arden Ward's voiced admonition to her clients, her colleagues, and herself, was repeated so frequently, that my eyes tired from all the rolling. A psychological thriller by definition hurtles from surprise to surprise, and someone who chooses crisis management as a profession is bound to encounter them. Arden's been hired to help rehabilitate a father and husband recently acquitted of vehicular murder, and throughout the novel she is constantly "surprised" by revelations concerning the murder, the man, his wife (who hired her), and her own workplace. The phrase "wrong word" comes up few times throughout the course of the book, but by the end I was so exhausted that I couldn't bother to determine exactly which word the title referred to.
Another fantastically twisted thriller from one of my favorite authors. Arden is such a great character and her job as a fixer of sorts is fascinating. I loved the multiple viewpoints and the way the suspense built in the story. I also enjoy the way it's written almost like a police procedural and the pieces of the puzzle are doled out slowly as more information is revealed. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Gail Shalan and she does an amazing job. I loved it!
Thank you net galley for the opportunity to read this book. This is one of my favorite authors. It is definitely a page turner .I did not want to put it down .There was good character flow throughout the book .Just when I thought I had it figured out ,I was wrong .I’m anxiously awaiting any more novels from Ryan. The narrator did a great job as well.
I’ve always wanted to do a book face picture. I’ll admit it may have taken longer to get that selfie then it took me to read the book. 😂 partially because the book is so good and partially cuz I’m a that bad at taking selfies.
But seriously I was drawn in from the start. Two women have their lives shattered by the men in their lives.
Secrets, deceptions and lies kept me guessing who to trust. It started out with a bang and then let me catch up to the cat and mouse game. Pay close attention to all the conversations Arden has, as all the clues are there but very well buried in the complex conversations.
Gail Shalan narrates this one and captures the nuances of those conversations. And make sure to listen to the end as the author reads her acknowledgments. How fun!
What would you do for family, money, sex and power? Ms. Ryan’s latest psychological thriller will keep you guessing up until then end. Arden, a public relations expert, is forced by her boss Warren to handle one last case before she losses her job. He promises her a good paycheck and recommendations. The case involves Cordelia and Ned. Ned is a powerful Boston real estate mogul. Cordelia comes to Arden and asks her to help restore her husband Ned’s reputation. Ned was just acquitted for murder. So, who did commit the murder? I throughly enjoyed this audiobook.
Thank you #NetGalley, #MacmillanAudio, #HankPhillippiRyan, #GailShalan and #OneWrongWord for the advance audiobook for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "One Wrong Word" by Hank Phillippi Ryan is a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The intricate plot twists and turns, keeping you guessing until the very end. Ryan's writing style is engaging, drawing you into the lives of the characters and making you feel invested in their journey. If you're a fan of suspenseful mysteries with well-developed characters, this book is a must-read!
I have a few by this author on my shelves, but this was my first and it did NOT disappoint! What a suspenseful, unputdownable thriller; it's the epitome of bingeable. It's smart, sexy, meticulously plotted, and fast paced. It had me in its grips from beginning to end. The narrator, Gail Shalan, is fabulous and was perfectly matched to this book and these characters.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you #NetGalley for allowing me access to this book in return for an honest review. This audiobook was pretty good, it was very similar to a police procedural type of novel which isn't usually my favorite, but in general, I enjoyed the audiobook.
Arden is a hot shot PR rep who is facing termination from her job due to some allegations of indecency by a high-rolling client's wife. Her boss, Warren, explains that Arden is out of a job and that his hands are tied, but he offers Arden one last client to work with prior to her leaving the company. Arden decides she'll take on the client and knock it out of the park. Her client, Ned, has just been acquitted of vehicular homicide and his wife, Cordelia, wants Arden to improve Ned's image and reputation. Arden is committed to doing everything she can to ace this and win back her job. But nothing is really as it seems...
This was a decent read, it had a lot of action, but it was a little predictable. Arden really took on the role of an investigator in this book and I'm not a huge fan of procedural type books. It was difficult for me to feel fully invested. Objectively, the narrator was good and I felt like she did a great job of depicting each character, but her voice was grating and was hard for me to listen to, but that is just a personal preference. I think if you've read Hank Phillipi Ryan's books in the past, this one won't disappoint, it just wasn't my favorite type of thriller. Overall, 🌟🌟🌟
This book was very good however the ending dragged a bit and it could have ended a bit sooner. But overall very good!
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for access to this audio of One Wrong Word by Hank Phillippi Ryan.
"Arden Ward is wrongly accused of an affair with a client. She has two weeks to prove herself with one last client. Cordelia Bannister's husband, Ned, was acquitted of vehicular homicide after hitting someone in a parking garage. Cordelia wants Arden to help restore Ned's reputation and her standing with their friends.
Arden works to salvage the situation, but soon other details emerge about Ned. And then another car crash shoves him back in the spotlight and Arden is not sure what to believe anymore."
Arden is a character that is supposed to be a public relations guru. But she is incredibly trusting and naive. So many bad decisions - so many times believing what another character says when it's obvious they're being deceptive. Or when a character refuses to answer a simple question but continually changes the subject. Arden redeems herself at the end though, especially with her final decision. Redeems the story too after all of the bad decisions.
Fantastic performance on the audio by Gail Shalan. There are several male and female characters. She moved between voices seamlessly - even in the same paragraph.
Slow beginning and middle but great ending. Good story from Hank P Ryan
I really enjoyed the latest novel by Hank Phillippi Ryan, "One Wrong Word" and I loved the reader! Wonderful book.
Short synopsis: Wrongfully accused of an affair, crisis management specialist Arden had one last chance to save her career…. Represent Ned Bannister who was just acquitted in a murder trial. But things aren’t really what they seem when Ned’s attorney is hit by a car that is reminiscent of Ned’s murder accusation.
My thoughts: This was my first by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. Totally bingeable with plot twists, great characters, and lots of drama.
While I did figure out part of the big twist, I did not see the full extent. I was on the edge of my seat sneaking in pages any minute I could to figure out the mystery in this page turning thriller! Such a fun ride.
I did audio and physical mix of this Amber the narrator did such a phenomenal job! I may have a new narrator to add to my list of favorites!

One Wrong Word
by Hank Phillippi Ryan
Narrated by Gail Shalan
Rating: 4.3/5.0
One Wrong Word by Hank Phillippi Ryan is a fun, try-to-figure-out-who-really-did-it-type novel that will keep you guessing until the end. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the novel to keep things moving along steadily. The narration, performed by Ms. Shalan was well-done and I found her very easy to listen to. I didn't have a problem discerning who was talking at all.
This is mainly the story of Ned, who was just acquitted of a manslaughter charge, and Arden Ward, whom his wife has hired to clean up his post-trial public image so that they can go back to living a normal life. Well, things keep on happening to people and someone is texting Ned's wife with information that suggests that Ned may have actually known the man he accidentally killed. Adren is caught up in the middle of all of this and she needs to figure out what is REALLY going on before...well, before anyone else is injured or turns up dead. I don't want to give any more of the story away. My only real complaint with this novel is that I would have liked to have felt more invested in the characters and what happened to them. Just a bit more of a connection. Otherwise, it was a great listen!
Thanks so much to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and the author for the chance to listen to and review this ARC.
This is a psychological thriller that follows Arden Ward as she takes one final case before losing her high profile job as a PR/Crisis Manager. Her client is newly acquitted of murder, and his family’s lives are in turmoil even after the acquittal, but then an accident happens that makes Arden wonder if she’s working for the right people.
It’s a moderately paced novel, that’s much more mystery and suspense rather than thriller. I enjoyed Arden’s character and her point of view of seeing things from every angle. Occasionally it switched to the POV of others, but it was never confusing. The author and audiobook narrator did a great job of keeping things flowing smoothly.
The mystery itself was pretty intriguing, although I had one part pegged pretty early on. Still, I like the way the solving of the case came about, and the cast of people who worked together to do so.
Overall I’d say this is a good 3.5-4 star listen! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this one, but I found it a little tough to follow, and kept having to go back in the audio.
Arden Ward is a crisis management expert who finds herself in a crisis of her own when she is accused of having an affair with one of her clients.
She attempts to save her career by getting involved with a family where the husband was just acquitted in a fatal drunk driving accident. She throws herself into uncovering clues to save his reputation, only to find more than what she anticipated.
I enjoyed the narration of the book, nothing really stood out to me as good or bad, which is the best type of narrator in my opinion.
I found the story itself to be rather convoluted, but in the end, it came together for me. The book is definitely more telling than doing with a lot of important conversations that you need to pay attention to.
I would have preferred to visually read a book like this rather than listen to it, due to all the nuances. I still enjoyed it, but it took me longer than necessary
The novel's pace was one of the things that stood out to me the most. It covered a span of many days, yet was able to do so in a concise and engaging way. The characters, while seemingly straightforward at first, were given depth and complexity as the story developed. This made it easy to get invested in their individual journeys, even as the mystery surrounding them deepened.
As the plot progressed, it became increasingly difficult to determine who was telling the truth and who was lying. The different versions of events that were presented throughout the novel made me question every character's motives and actions. This kept me on edge throughout the story and added an extra layer of intrigue to the mystery at hand.
While I found the ending to be a bit too dramatic for my personal taste, I appreciated how it tied up loose ends and provided a satisfying resolution to the story. Overall, I found this to be a great thriller that kept me engaged and entertained from start to finish.
One of the things that I particularly enjoyed about this novel was how the main character, Arden, was a savvy crisis management expert rather than a detective. This made her unique compared to other protagonists in the genre and added an interesting dynamic to the story. Watching her narrow down the suspects and try to solve the case using unconventional methods was both entertaining and refreshing.
I am grateful to NetGalley for granting me access to an advanced copy of this novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The author's writing style was engaging, and the plot was well-crafted, keeping me hooked from beginning to end. The characters were well-developed, and I found myself invested in their stories and rooting for them throughout the book.
Unfortunately I did not love this book as much as I loved her others. I did not feel very connected with the characters, and the lawyer anxiety in me/the fear that something was missed or done incorrectly, made it difficult to get into. I guessed most of the twists early on because of a lot of foreshadowing, so I was likely less surprised than some readers would be. Because of this, I did not feel as invested in what was coming.
I can see how a lot of readers will love this book. There are a few entangled plot lines and multiple POV, which always make for a fun thriller read. I always love an unreliable narrator and gaslighting in my thrillers. There is certainly plenty of that in this book. For me - the main character was a little flaky in her convictions, which made it hard for me to enjoy her POV. She switched around a lot.
The narration was pleasant. The voice was very quiet and I think this book needed something very poppy and engaging to keep the reader guessing. I have listened to this narrator a handful of times and always love her narration, so maybe it just did not fit with this plot for me.
I will continue to read and recommend both the author and the narrator, as I know my criticisms with this book are personal and specific to this book.
Ned has been acquitted of vehicular manslaughter. His wife has hired Arden, a crisis management agent, to help bring their reputation out of the mud. But, Arden is fighting her own battles at work. She has been accused of having an affair with a big client. So, Ned and Cordelia are her last clients at this firm. But, they may end up being her last clients forever.
Talk about twisted! This story just keeps twisting around itself with all the lies and rumors. I did figure it out, but then I questioned if I was right or not! I love when an author throws a wrench into the mix!
Arden is a character that I grew to respect. Can you respect a character?? Well, I did. She didn’t let what was happening at work affect her work…clear as mud??? She took on this client and her goal was to protect…and she definitely went out of her way to do that…then the story shifted again and again! Lies and rumors abound!
The narrator, Gail Shalan, is super! I really liked her voice for Cordelia. Cordelia is a bit emotional. And sometimes a narrator can “overwork” those vocals. Shalan is perfect as Cordelia.
