A necessary balm for the hyper-opinionated, confrontational online world of today. Brooke is clearly trying to find a middle way, to steal the Buddhist phrase, between the far right and far left. She acknowledges the importance of the social justice movement, but also draws attention to the ways in which its followers start to veer into censorship territory themselves. I found this book to be a very helpful way of reframing the dualism we tend to see in many political and social issues today.
The Third Perspective by Africa Brooke is a self-help book about listening and remaining open to people's opinions that we may disagree with. It's definitely something that is needed right now. She says, "Behind every viewpoint is a real person with their own story. Get curious about how they arrived to their thinking. Agreeing isn't always the goal; sometimes, it's more about seeing where the other person is coming from. It's your way of showing that you hear them and are open to considering their perspective without immediate negative judgement." I highly recommend this book.
