Short, sweet, and utterly heartwarming

This book had me tears as it just beautifully captures the wonderful phenomena which is motherhood. The author has done an incredible job with this book and I’ll be mentioning to some friends immediately.

I honestly can’t believe something so short could bring me to tears so quickly but it’s just beautiful.

I feel like I want to write more for this review but honestly I have nothing else to say - it's perfect.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC

5/5 Stars!!! Thank you, NetGalley and Familius for this eARC of Call Your Mother by Tracy Gold.

This is a wonderful and heart-warming story! This honestly made me call my mom after I read this story. Although I am sad that I do not have a baby girl, I love the story of the unconditional love that children show to their parents. I know that whenever I go home to visit my parents I always show a lot of appreciation and hug my parents longer than you're supposed to haha. The illustration is beautiful and I will be gifting this book for my friends who are having babies this year. This story just reminds me of the strong bond that I have with my mother and it just...feels wonderful.

Sobbing with so much love on this end. <3

As an adult that lives far away from her mother this book got me in more core. It is beautifully written but truly simply at it's core. It's a simple reminder no matter how old you are. Cherish those calls and never ever forget.

This is a beautiful little book about celebrating all that a mother does. It is about lifelong, unconditional love. The illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommended!

This is one of those sweet, sentimental picture books that will make a nice gift for Mother's Day and baby showers. The book has the repeated refrain "call your mother," going through years of a girl's life from her babyhood, to school-age activities, to her teen years, to eventually having a child of her own. The book shows how the girl can depend on her mother in all of these situations, especially when she feels overwhelmed as a new mom.

Because this doesn't have much of a storyline, its impact depends on the emotional context, and it will appeal far more to adults than to children. This will be a heartwarming tearjerker for many mothers, and they are the true audience of this book.

Even though I appreciate the intent, I feel ambivalent about this book, particularly because of the message that your mom should be your first point of contact in every moment of life. The constant refrain of "call your mother" had me thinking, "What about dad? Surely it's his turn to take care of you when you wake up in the middle of the night. Surely he'll be cheering at your sports game, too!" Of course, not everyone has an involved and loving dad, or a father figure at all, but I feel uncomfortable with cultural scripts that teach kids that mom should be everything to them. As a society, we valorize all that moms do while also placing tremendous burdens on them, making it sound like they should be the ones to do everything.

The family in this book is limited to a mother and one child, but it still felt off to me. Although this book honors the emotional labor involved in motherhood, it also conveys the assumption that mom should be your first and only stop for everything. It got so repetitive throughout the book that I was like, "Surely this child has some other supportive adult in her life, too." Even in families where there isn't a dad at home, there are other people who can help kids, give advice, and cheer them on.

I know that I'm overthinking this, but I just don't feel comfortable with the overly sentimental, unrealistic burden that books like this place on mothers, especially new moms, who shouldn't have to carry every household burden or believe that they're failing if they can't do it all. Even when the grown-up daughter is struggling and turns to her mom, there's still no portrayal of a second parent's involvement with the child. Overall, even though there's nothing really wrong with this book in and of itself, I feel uncomfortable with the cultural scripts in the background.

As a 50 year old woman who has always loved picture books, this book nearly made me cry. This book follows the little girl straight into adulthood. I adored the style of the illustrations, especially of the little cat! So cute! And as someone who calls her mother almost every day, for every thing, I appreciated the message of this book. My mother is nearly 77 years old and I know she won't be here forever and this book really touched my heart. Wonderful for children and adults alike! Call your mother!

Call Your Mother by Tracy Gold is the sweetest book for kids about their relationship with their mom...and what it's like to be a mom. I loved the illustrations. I highly recommend this book for new moms, kids who love their moms and anyone. This definitely belongs in the category: Children's books that make their parents happy cry while reading them.

Such a sweet story regarding how strong the bonds and love there is between a mother and her child. By taking the reader throughout the course of a child's life we see her mother being there always to comfort and help her in a way only she can. A magnificent book perfect for younger readers and an anthem to motherly love.

It's a lovely and heartwarming book that one might enjoy more as an adult than as a kid, but the illustrations are cute enough to keep the little ones entertained too (and that cat looks just like my family cat, which made the story even sweeter for me).

I got emotional. You bet I called my mum after reading it.

Oh my goodness, this story had me tearing up, it's so beautiful!

"Call Your Mother" follows a mom and her daughter as her child grows up into adulthood. Captured by gorgeous illustrations, we see all the ways the mom loves, cares for, and supports her daughter through problems, worries, achievements - really, everything! The use of rhyme and the repetition of "Call your mother" reinforces the daughter can always depend on her mother no matter the challenges she may face.

I loved everything about this story and the wonderful mother-daughter bond that was depicted.

Thanks again Familius and NetGalley for the e-ARC to read in exchange for an honest review!

What a beautiful children’s picture book! It even made me cry by the end. The green color theme throughout is incredibly soothing and gender neutral, making this a perfect book for a mom or a new baby. The illustrations are beautiful and the rhyming, while sometimes not exactly on point, had enough cadence to flow beautifully. I would recommend this for a baby shower gift!

The central figure of the book is the Mother, who for a child is like the Sun to our solar system: irreplaceable and the source of everything. When something hurts, when we are sad or incredibly happy, we immediately turn to our mother. This story reminded me of the happy and, yes, less happy moments of my motherhood. I especially liked that the illustrations also showed the tired mother! This is a perfect summary of a mother-daughter relationship.

What a sweet book! Beautifully illustrated and beautifully written. It's the perfect gift to any mom at any stage in life. It's short because the years truly go by so very fast! Hold on to your babies and make the best memories with them, you never know when they will be calling on you later in life.

This is an adorable story about how your mother is always there for you, both when you need her and when you don’t. It was a heartwarming story that made me appreciate even more having my mother there for me.

You know the refrain here already: Call Your Mother. This deceptively simple picture book takes readers through a series of times a child might call its mother—from infancy (I don't have kids, but the exhausted mother stumbling in in the wee hours of the morning made me laugh with sympathy) through to schoolday nerves (my gosh that hug looks cozy) and into adulthood.

I think parts of this will resonate better with adults, who can perhaps remember each of these sorts of incidents better than a young reader can imagine, but I can also easily see it as a way to remind an anxious kid that their parent(s) will (...barring the unexpected, but maybe an anxious five-year-old doesn't need to hear that...) be there for them as they grow and age, in good times and in bad. My favorite illustration, far and away, is a variation on the cover illustration, but the whole thing is neatly done, with clean and soft lines. Would absolutely put this one on a young kid's shelves.

Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.

This book made me cry. I lost my mom three months after my daughter was born, so it was a hard but beautiful read. It's a sweet tale about the beautiful bond between a mother and daughter. My mom told me once that she wouldn't trade that bond for anything in the world, and I'm so glad that I am getting to experience it myself now. I just wish she was still here so I could Call My Mother.

Thank you, Ms. Gold for sharing this beautiful story, and NetGalley for sharing it as well.

This would be a beautiful mother's day gift for any of you - especially daughter's - to get your mother. Just don't be surprised if she cries when she reads it.

The illustrations in this book are engaging. The plot is flat and does not apply to many children. I am unsure of the message that this book is trying to send to children.
