Another great book, that keeps you guessing from start to finish.
Will and Jessica are a happily married couple, until their world turns upside down when some incriminating photos of Will and another women are sent to Jess.
After being kicked out of the family home, Will meets a stranger that decides to help. But is he the kind and friendly man he protrays to be?
Jess is supported by her mum and best friend.
Both of the characters are trying to get on with their lives but slowly they meet new people. But are they friends or foe?
A great guessing game went on in my head!
This book drove me crazy and I didn’t think I would be able to finish it. I wanted to scream at Will and Jessica for lack of communication however if there had been dialogue between the two we wouldn’t have had the story.
It ended up reeling me in and I looked forward to the outcome. The story does twist and turn although some of it was predictable. I would read more books by this author.
Thank you NetGalley & SE Lynes for an advanced copy.
Oh my god this is one book that will reel you in and not let go till that very last page. There was so many twists, I literally couldn’t predict what was going to happen. The characters where fantastic. Such a gripping read. Definitely going to be a best seller!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Split by S.E. Lynes. I loved the idea of this book, but the writing was choppy. The different scenes didn’t always flow smoothly, and I found myself going back to make sure I didn’t miss a transition. Both Will and Jessica were terrible communicators, and Will didn’t have any common sense so their interactions were frustrating to read. If you love the suspense of not knowing who sent the pictures this would be a compelling read, but I needed more.
This was an exciting read that unexpectedly pulled me in at the last third of the book. I found myself wanting to grab the characters by the shoulders and yell at them. They were deliciously frustrating with all the miscommunication and jumping to conclusions. And yet I found I couldn’t really blame them. I was convinced I had it all figured out, and for the most part I did, but at the end when everything came together I HAD to read the next page… and the next… and I couldn’t stop. I definitely recommend this book if you do not read mystery thrillers often, but do want to try.
I’ll rate this a 3.5 stars.
The first 60% is building up the deterioration of communication between the husband and wife. Husband allowing strangers to poison his mind against his wife, the mother of his children. Wife spiraling in her own thoughts and assumptions, reacting out of anger rather than slowing down and being rational.
As you continue, you can definitely see where the plot is heading. Fair enough Jumpscare at the end.
Main theme of this book —- COMMUNICATION IS KEY. and you know what they say about assumptions …..
Thank you to netgallery and bookouture for the ARC!
Will and Jessica are celebrating their anniversary when Jessica receives incriminating photos alluding to an affair between Will and a mystery woman. Jessica immediately kicks Will out and we follow their lives as each of them receives outside influences on how to proceed. Ulterior motives and manipulation could be the undoing of everyone involved.
This book was a slow family drama until about 60% through. Things picked up with some predictable twists and some I never saw coming.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
The Split felt repetitive and an used story in a new coat.
A great deal of the story was family drama, mundane every day things with a writing style that didn´t flow. The plot was nothing special and felt flat after so many pages reading and trying to figure out what was happening. Nearing the end I didn´ care anymore.
The twist was predictable but even if it wasn´t the story didn´t grip me enough to care anymore.
A thriller should be engaging from the beginning and this was endless musings and inner thoughts and unbelief. I think the premise was better than the actual story that felt flat and uninspiring.
1 star.
ARC kindly received from Netgalley.
I loved The Split. I was wrapped up in Jessica and Will’s story. Who was the “friend” who sent Jessica
Photos? I found myself quickly turning the pages to find out what Will was wrapped up in and how he was going to get out of it. This is such a great page turner, quick paced and SO good! Can’t wait to read more from S.E. Lynes.
f it seems too good to be true….. it probably is! Ohhhh how Will should’ve listened to his instincts. People preying on another person’s weakness is rather disturbing. The Split is a fast paced read that will have you questioning people’s motives.
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture, and S.E. Lynes for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The Split by S.E. Lynes is another page-turner from an author who never fails to deliver a captivating read.
Will and Jessica are celebrating their anniversary when a mysterious text message appears, making claims of Will's infidelity. Jessica is stunned, and reacts by immediately throwing Will out of their home. Will, for his part, maintains that things are not as they appear. A chance meeting with a stranger will set Will on a new course, and Jessica struggles to keep it all together while trying to reconcile Will's strange new behaviour.
This one kept me turning the pages. The short, deliberate narrative really kept things moving and, quite unusually, my attention didn't waver for even a second. I very much look forward to whatever the amazing S.E. Lynes has in store for us next.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
This book was deeper than I assumed it would be when first reading the synopsis. I kind of figured out the plot twists but that didn't make the journey any less enjoyable. Some of the characters annoyed me but they had to in order to make the story work as well as it did. I am officially a S.E. Lynes fan!
I have read and loved several of Lynes’s books, and this was no exception. When it comes to psychological thrillers Lynes always delivers, which shows the author knows what hooks you and keeps you turning the pages.
In the split the two main characters Will and Jessica split after compromising pictures of will with another woman is sent to her. Their relationship soon starts to sour and a war is imminent. But something isn’t quite as it seems.
This might seem like your typical revenge plot, but it’s so much more. First, the characters were well fleshed out, with rich emotions that were described beautifully. Their pain felt raw and real, and my heart bled with them. Then there is the manipulation and promise of buried secrets and tantalizing revelations. You try to figure out what’s going on along with the characters, and the need to know more is there from the start. I am sure I will remember this one for a long time, the events felt believable but stood out enough to not go into the vault of similar stories that makes it hard to recall later. The story was well-executed with enough details to make it come alive without slowing everything down too much. I also loved that if you pay close attention, you will know where it’s going, and boy does it deliver in the end!
I definitely recommend this for all thrillaholics out there.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion
Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Split. This truly was a fascinating plot full of family drama, shady characters and suspense.
A couple married for a few years and are happy suddenly find themselves in a love hate relationship. Jessica discovers pictures on her phone that appear her husband is having an affair. Although he denies it he knows he cannot reveal the truth.
Terribly hurt and angry Jessica throws him out.
So starts the split. As this couple finds themselves fighting with each other they meet different characters that seem good at first but something ties them all together. And soon danger lurks for all involved and a murder plot begins.
But who is in on it and who is innocent kept me reading this evolving tale of love, hate, deception and betrayal.
Good read. 3.5 stars
Well Holy Moly Me Oh My!
Your books are the apple of my eye
Hen, I’ve never loved books like yours!
Seriously, writing reviews for SE Lynes books gets harder and harder every year! Why? Because every single year she produces yet another masterpiece that blows my mind away! Cards on the table, I am a HUGE fan of SE Lynes writing and I’ll bet her shopping list would have my heart pounding. I kind of want to just tell all you lovely readers out there to just stop whatever you are doing and get out there and buy ALL of her books (and I am kind of telling you that too!)
So The Split, well as you can no doubt tell by the blurb, we have got a pretty toxic kind of set up going on here, it’s clear that this break up is not going to be clean but if you think you are picking up a standard “man loves woman; they fall out, things get a wee bit rough and then it’s all ok again”, kind of read then you are so, so wrong! The Split just oozes with suspense. This is no wham bam action packed, thriller, rather we have a delicious slow burn which ticks every single box in the psychological thriller genre. Slow burn in NOT bad folks ok…slow burn can be just as, if not even more menacing, than your fast pacey reads! This author is an expert in slowly peeling back the layers of each character, teasing you with little glimpses of their past while at the same time raising the stakes as the pages turn.
The prologue is a great example of this, almost immediately we are thrust into Jessica’s past, and quite brutally too, what a mesmerizing opening, it sucked me right in before hurtling me forward to the here and now, where things start to go horribly wrong in her marriage.
SE Lynes is almost hypnotic in her writing, the words glide, slither and wrap you up in all the emotions of the characters. It’s an ordinary scenario, a couple celebrating their anniversary, but the underlying sense of knowing that nothing is going to be ordinary at all just worms its way out of the pages. Jess and Will were doing just fine, living their ordinary life until one day BOOM!
She has once again created a cast of true to life, relatable characters who immediately captivate me and as we learn a little bit more about them, we can almost empathise with the choices they make and the actions they take. Honestly I became part of this story, part of their lives and as always was bereft when it was all over.
She has a canny knack of presenting her characters in a way that makes you think they are just ordinary joes but then lacing each little contact with a hint of doubt - making you wary and suspicious of them all but at the same time so invested in their lives that it’s impossible to step away
My heart broke for Jessica and the sense of betrayal she felt and because she felt so real to me, it almost felt as though I was one of the mums she tried to avoid at the school gate, I was so engrossed in her life that it felt almost voyeuristic as I got caught up in the drama. And boy did that feel good!
I don’t want to say too much about other people involved in the storyline as I’m afraid of giving away spoilers but let’s just say that SE Lynes pulled the rug from under my feet so often, I was about to make a referral to the Falls Prevention team for myself! A pool full of red herrings meant I was kept guessing right until the very end!
And while I mentioned the slow burn, don’t mistake that for dull, each of the short chapters are jam packed with a simmering tension meaning the pace is perfection!
The Split demonstrates that not all acts of kindness are given out kindly. The book is a real deep dive into trust and love and what it really means to have your trust broken.
The Split is off my “It’s a belter” scale.
If you haven’t read any of SE Lynes books then a. I’m insanely jealous as you get to experience them all for the first time and b. I think you must be crazy…go out and buy this NOW!
This is WAY more than 5 stars!
Jessica and Will are celebrating their 7th anniversary when Jessica gets pictures sent to her from a mysterious person and they are of Will with another woman? She throws him out of the house with not letting him explain anything and it all goes down hill from there. This was a good thriller! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance copy in exchange for my honest review. To be published March 2024.
It makes me sad to write this review especially that I am big S.E. Lynes fan, but, I did not like this book, at all.
A text message with photos of infidelity threatens Will and Jessica's marriage. But is it just a typical act of cheating? Or something more complicated and terrifying?
First off, I didn't like any of the characters, this usually affect my mood whenever I read a book because if I couldn't connect to the main character, I easily lose interest, but I gave this one a chance. The plot is nothing extraordinary, the twists were flat and predictable and I just wanted it to end so I could breathe.
Although I didn't like this book, I'm not going to stop reading Lynes. Maybe this is just not for me.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC!
3.5 stars.
I enjoyed the journey and wanted to keep reading. But I was also beyond frustrated with the main trope, the characters and predicted almost everything.
The miscommunication trope is my least favourite. This isn't just miscommunication though so that's not a reason to not check it out.
The suspense and intrigue throughout was there, but ultimately I knew exactly where we were going.
As for the characters, they were infuriating. Making extremely bad (and tbh, dumb) choices over and over from the get go. Leading to the book even seeming repetitive at times and various "we get it" moments.
This was a buddy read with Lit with Leigh and it was so much fun, even if we both called what was going on in early days.
I'd consider recommending this to some people, especially if you're not only here for the twists.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Loved this story!! Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of this book to read and review.
Will and Jessica have reached a "season" in their marriage, and Jessica receives some shocking photos, giving her the ammo to tell Will to leave. Before Will can explain what she has seen, she has cast him out, they need a "split." A chance meeting with a mysterious stranger helps him get back on his feet while his wife seemingly moves on very quickly. Things seemed to fall into place for me while reading so neatly that I was certain I had this one figured out! I did not see some of the twists coming at all. This was a fast-paced read, and I loved it! I have so much I could say about each and every character in play, but I don't want to spoil anything! I recommend this one for sure.
. I absolutely loved this book. It makes you question what is going on constantly. I did figure out the main plot early on but the side plots I didn’t have a clue. I couldn’t stop reading as I just wanted to know what was going to happen
