I have read previous books by S.E. Lynes and have enjoyed them all, The Split is no exception. I was completely hooked from the beginning and with all the twists and turns I just could not put it down. It was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
I’ve read several of this author’s books and they’re always page turners full of twists and turns. This latest book is the same - curl up with a cuppa and don’t look at your phone for a few hours
First of all, thank you Bookouture & NetGalley for the ARC.
To be honest, the synopsis of this book really interests me, hence made me want and excited to read it. I think I might have some kind of expectation towards this book, yet honestly for me it doesn’t meet my expectations towards the end.
The plot indeed have good base structure, could’ve been better / more but the writing style kind of messing with it in my honest opinion. Perhaps the writing style isn’t my cup of tea, as it’s too drag-ish + I didn’t really indulge in that kind of pov style where there are mixed of first and fourth person pov I think? Dialogues also aren’t clear enough between characters at times, as it mixed between talking and narrating etc. Sometimes it made me confuse a bit and have to reread the sentences while dreading with the plot building throughout the story. I can easily predict what’s what / how it’ll go and then proven right for all them upon the reveals towards the end. Perhaps I’m just a strong instinct reader, yet still, unfortunately the plot doesn’t thrilled me as how I expected it to be, sorry. I really like the idea of the story at first, and I do think it has so much potential, yet maybe the writing style / the plot building doesn’t catch up with my preferences & expectations.
The characters are good I think, the author manages to make them as real with their own strength & weaknesses to stand out their own personalities, and indeed each suits with the story well enough. For example, Ian is a good one for a villain - although I can detect him for who he was from the earliest chapter, he’s been portrayed well for his character - the sly / manipulative yet clever, out for revenge with high patience & great calculation kind of person, whom managed to outwit Will, Jessica & Lena. Will character manage to made my blood boiled as well, especially with his denial on his betrayal towards his wife, Jessica. He believes his kiss with Margot was special yet not a kind of betrayal towards Jessica is truly annoying, hence yes each characters delivers their part nicely throughout the story in my opinion.
I’m sorry as I can’t give higher for this book since I think overall I’m neither enjoyed nor unhappy with this book. For others, you guys should just try to read it as you might enjoy it since we might have different taste in how our thrillers goes.
I really enjoyed The Split by author S E Lynes. I have read books by this author before and always been gripped.
We meet married couple Jessica and Will and they are seemingly happy, until Jessica is given what looks like evidence of an affair between Will and another woman. Everything kicks off and Will is taken in by a stranger. The story was slow in places and then in others it was non-stop overload of action
Will tells Jessica it is not what she thinks but he will not tell her the truth. I really enjoyed reading about Jessica, I thought she was a well developed character and I would actually like to read more about her.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publishers.
Good well written thriller, a little slow at first but picked up pace. Jessica and Will both were being manipulated. Both of their points of view added more mystery. Climax is great, although I guessed it before. A nice quick thriller. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the eARC.
I don’t know how @S.E Lynes comes up with these plots and manages to make it all fit together seamlessly! Loved the plot and couldn’t wait to finish it to see how it all worked out. I like the character of Jessica and found her likeable and relatable but found the other main character Will infuriating but that was needed for the story to work.
Jessica receives photos of her husband Will with another woman at a hotel and kicks him out. While drowning his sorrows, Will meets Ian who offers his help in the form of somewhere to stay. Spurred on by her friend Lena to make the split official, Jessica employs the services of a solicitor to start divorce proceedings. The split then turns deadly.
Can’t wait to see what S.E Lynes has in store next!
First I want to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and S.E. Lynes for my ARC of The Split. WOW! I could not put this book down! I was so invested and just NEEDED to know what happened next! The characters were well developed and believable as a married couple. The beginning was a bit slow but it definitely picked up. I found myself really drawn to Jessica more than Will. The perspective from both Jessica and Will really helped develop the story. I thought I had this one figured out but I didn’t have everything figured out! This was my first book by S.E. Lynes but certainly will not be my last!
Jessica and Will are happily married … or so it seems. An email from a mysterious friend destroys Jessica’s trust in Will and he seems incapable of defending himself.
The characters were well developed and believable as a married couple going through crisis and how anger and hurt can cause things to quickly spiral.
However there is much more to this story. When Will is befriended by a stranger it seems he has landed on his feet but why is this stranger helping Will and what will he expect in return?
This was an easy 4 star read for me; compelling, pacy and twisty.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.

The night before Jessica’s life seemingly falls apart her and her husband Will enjoy a nice evening date celebrating their anniversary. She goes to bed content with her husband and the life they live with their two children only to wake up the next morning to an anonymous text with pictures of Will’s infidelity.. Pictures of her husband with an attractive woman in fancy hotels, holding hands walking down the streets, and kissing behind windows… She confronts Will with her proof, begging him for an explanation only for him to deny it and tell her it’s not what’ she thinks.. is it really infidelity or is Will being somewhat honest?
She kicks him out and he is left licking his wounds
in a local pub where he meets a stranger who he thinks is kind man willing to befriend someone down on his luck.. but does he turn out to be a friend or foe? Will and Jessica’s spilt soon turns to a war..
This book was spilt into two main characters. Will and Jessica. It was nice to see each characters own points of view. The plot was very interesting and kept me wanting to turn the page. Every time I thought I had someone or something figured out I was proven surprisingly wrong! It had a several big twists and turns and the ending left me shocked!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone & can’t wait to read more from this author.
Thank you netgalley & bookouture!
This was a well written book but a very slow paced read. The actual story was good and there was a few good twists thrown in but just seemed to take a long time to get through.
This book had me hooked from the very first page. I loved all the twist and turns. I thought I knew who was the bad guy from the start but a few twists proved me wrong.
I feel like I’m reviewing two separate books because for the first 60% or so I found really drawn out and nothing much happened, but that last 40% was quite gripping, and I enjoyed how it all came together at the end. I thought about DNF’ing this around the 50% mark, but I’m glad I never.
Some chapters are on the longer side and the characters, especially Will, are insufferable, and I found myself skim reading some of his chapters and the miscommunication made me feel like tearing my hair out. Having said that, I have read and enjoyed a couple of S.E Lynes book and I think they are a fantastic author, I just don’t think this was the book for me.
2 STARS 🌟💫

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to review this book.
This was a slow burn and for the first half I didn’t know where it was going as the scene and characters were built. Jessica and Will have a normal life in London with their two children, her Mum and best friend Lena both live nearby. Told from dual perspectives of Jessica and Will their lives are about to be shattered. The second half really ramped up with a shocking story about manipulation that will keep you gripped to the end.
Briefly, one day Jessica receives a text on her phone with numerous photos attached of Will with another woman. Thoroughly crushed she tells Will to get out even though he tries to explain that it isn’t what it seems. As their lives spiral out of control Will meets a friend who offers to put him up whilst Jessica meets a new man. But is everything as it seems and what has changed Lena from her usual bubbly self?
I thought I saw through the plot but was blown way off course as both their journeys got darker and darker with a shocking conclusion. Secrets come pouring out and it’s difficult to tell who you can trust. An entertaining and captivating physiological thriller.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.
In The Split, the two main characters Will and Jessica split apart after compromising pictures of Will with another woman is sent to Jessica. As this couple finds themselves fighting with each other they meet different characters that seem good at first but something ties them all together. Before you know it, danger lurks for all involved and a murder plot begins. There are parts of the book where it's very repetitive and slow-paced. There are twists and turns, some predictable and some that I simply did not see coming. Who is guilty and who is innocent? You'll have to read to find out, in this story of love and hate, truth and deception, and loyalty and betrayal.
This author always delivers a great story, with complex, well-rounded characters, and plots that get under your skin. She hasn't failed this time. The plot plays out slowly, carefully, irresistibly, as each page cranks up the tension just a little bit more until by the end I was racing through it. Alternating between Will and Jessica's points of view, all is not as it seems as the suburban dream of a perfect marriage disintegrates. Wow! Beautiful writing from S.E. Lynes. Bravo!
This book right here is everything I ever wanted in a thriller and MORE.
The Split
S.E. Lynes, is a literary genius and has instantly become my new favorite author. Ive read previous work by this author that I thoroughly enjoyed and still recommend BUT nothing will ever compare to The Split
This book is absolutely insane and will have you peering over your shoulder and sleeping with the lights on.
Check out this teaser :
The end of our marriage was only the beginning…
Last night, we celebrated our anniversary. Over candlelight, we talked about the children, our work, and I was so happy, and felt so loved.
But the next morning, when I check my phone, there is a message. From a friend. And a string of photos appear of my husband, Will, with another woman: walking along the street holding hands. Going into fancy hotels. Standing at a window, his arms around her, her head on his shoulder…
I beg Will to tell me what’s going on. But all he can say is that it’s not what I think. As if the betrayal wasn’t bad enough, he won’t even be honest with me.
And now there’s someone watching our house. Will is acting like a stranger and I think he’s following me. I can’t trust him anymore, and I desperately need to know who sent me those photos and why.
But maybe Will is telling the truth.
Maybe it’s not what I think.
Because the more our pain stops us talking, and the more the two of us tear each other apart, the more I wonder if I ever knew him at all – and what I’ll have to risk to protect my children.
And when at last the secrets are revealed, will the truth save our family, or destroy us all?
Mystery/Suspense/Thrillers are some of my favorite books of all time. This one did not disappoint. It's hard to find a book like this that has a well-thought-out plot that keeps you on your toes and turning the pages. This one did it! It's also difficult to find original plots because a lot of the books in this genre seem to be remakes of earlier books, but again, this was very original. This book had me guessing the whole time, had me questioning the relationship and whether or not the husband could be trusted, and who on earth was watching. I love the books that make it hard to piece everything together, and I feel like this one did it for me. Excellent job, S.E. Lynes!
Jess and Will have just celebrated their wedding anniversary and are all loved up. The following day she receives a text from an unknown number titled 'from a friend' and her world falls apart, the text contains photos of Will and another woman and each one looks more than cosy, when she confronts him all he can say is 'it's not what you think' but what is she supposed to think when he's not telling her the truth?
The Split is a dual narrative story told alternately from the perspectives of Jessica and Will, the first half of the book is a slow burner where Lynes artistically weaves her web of lies and deceit and draws the reader in. From early on in the story, with the clues the author was dropping, I was certain I'd guessed a couple of things about certain characters and one thing I was sure of was that nobody could be trusted, least of all the suave and debonair Ian Robbins who took pity on Will in a pub one night and decided to help him out, but to what end? The second half of the book is where the author starts to ramp up the suspense and the secrets just come flooding out thick and fast, bringing together the pieces of the puzzle very nicely. I've read, and loved all of this author's books and, although this one didn't blow me away like her others have, it kept me entertained and intrigued throughout.
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
This really is a book of two half's. The first half, I have to confess, was quite drawn out. At around 60% of the way in, it picked up pace. However, it was predictable and I knew exactly where it was going to go. I am disappointed as S.E. Lynes really is a great author, but this is not their best work.
As always S.E. Lynes, has crafted a well written and intriguing story. The Split by S.E. Lynes is fast-paced, suspenseful, entertaining, and full of twists. I was immediately pulled into Will and Jessica’s story.
A compelling read that pushes all your buttons, The Split is addictive and fast paced from beginning to end.
Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
