Will and Jessica’s marriage comes to an abrupt end one morning, when Jessica receives compromising images of Will. In the fall out, Will befriends Ian, who further fuels the fire, while Jessica’s friend Lena confides that she never liked Will. Will is adamant that Jessica’s assumptions are wrong, but fails to deliver an alternative explanation, setting a sequence of events in motion…
A frustrating but compelling drama of miscommunication, misplaced trust and secrets. Will is frustratingly naive and the miscommunication is infuriating at times. Lynes uses the ladder of inference technique to good effect. The middle section was a little slow, but the pacing picked up again at the end, to the point that the ending ended up feeling a bit abrupt.
However, the mystery was sustained throughout, with more than one reveal delivered at the very end.
I enjoyed this one, but felt it could potentially have been shorter, as it felt a bit repetitive at times.
Jessica and Will celebrate their anniversary, still on a high the next morning, Jessica receives a text from an unknown number with multiple images of Will with another woman. Is this the end of their marriage or just the start of their nightmare?
Jessica feels like she’s being watched, she feels like Will isn’t telling her everything and there’s the kids to think about too.
I love SE Lynes and this book when I saw it, I knew I had to read it! Would recommend for those who like a slow burn with an ending you may not see coming.
Always love a Susie Lynes psychological thriller! The Split is about a happy couple until one day some indecent pictures of the husband with another woman show up on the wife's phone. Both parties make decisions that cannot be walked back and the twists and turns abound. Solid read!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
Susie Lynes has written some of my favourite books, unfortunately this one just missed the mark for me. The psychological drama was just a little too contrived for me – at many points you think “well that just wouldn’t happen”, and left me feeling decidedly uncomfortable. Also it was clear who wasn’t to be trusted from the very beginning, even if you hadn’t worked out all the plot twists.
That not withstanding it is brilliantly written, and I really enjoyed the last few chapters. A good book but not her best work in my opinion.
Another great read from this author, I found the main characters hugely frustrating but I enjoyed being frustrated by them! I was hooked and raced through to finish!
The morning after Jessica and Will celebrate their anniversary, Jess is sent pictures that will rock their entire relationship.
With lots of twist and turns, this as initially a slow-paced domestic thriller that picked up around half-way and was then fast-paced till the end. The characters are pretty believable, I would have just loved to have been able to give them both a slap as, if they had just talked to each other, most of the trouble could have been avoided!
I have never read anything by this author before. I read a lot of thrillers and unfortunately the plot of this book was not that original. I found it quite predictable, but the writing was decent. I feel that most of the conflict in this book could have been avoided if Jessica and Will just communicated with each other. It was quite frustrating reading them actually. Expecially Will annoyed me to my core. And Jessica... how could she not see all those red flags???
The Split
4.5⭐️
I can totally see how a rating for this book could be swayed by my headspace at the time of reading. The first half is a slow, relatively light psychological domestic drama/suspense that has you screaming at the characters to just communicate. I loved it! But had this caught me at a time when I wanted a thrilling, twisty, dark read then it would have scored lower. That said, after a tame first half, the second half kept me on the edge of my seat-not sure what direction this was going to take.
Jessica and Will just celebrated their wedding anniversary and had a lovely night. Life is just perfect. Until Jessica wakes up to damning photographs of Will and a mystery woman sent by an anonymous number. Jessica kicks Will out and the story follows their individual perspectives (alternating POVs) as they navigate this new life. Each of them spiral as they speculate, ruminate, and miscommunicate.

I have read a few SE Lynes books and I am always invested from the 1st pages and this book was no different, however it did become a bit predictable, the main male protagonist was easy to read and it was quite obvious that he was playing games with all the main characters. Would I recommend it to others, yes, absolutely if you like psychological thrillers, is it S E Lynes best, not in my opinion.
I thought the book started a bit slow, predictable and unrealistic but WOW once it got to the later part, I completely changed my mind! The cleverness of the author and billiant writing meant I was racing to finish it to find out the truth but also not wanting it to end!
Thanks to NetGalley for my copy.
Unfortunately I have read almost half of this story and I found it to be very slow. I had no interest in the characters or the plot. I will not be reading more from this author.
Wow! Such a brilliant read! Tense, gripping and mysterious - I loved it!
Career focussed Jess is blissfully content in her marriage to stay-at-home-dad Will, when she receives photos of him with another woman. Devastated, she tells him to leave, despite his protestations of "it's not what you think", hmmm!
The characters in the book were well written and I engaged with them straight away. The pace was fast and exciting and although I worked out part of the twist, I absolutely didn't work out the extent of the deceit, it was proper "edge of your seat" gripping!
4.5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, S.E. Lines and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Average Plot, ending was pretty crazy and def was a twist . However the book was so this was so implausible . Def giving popcorn thriller which I don't mind at times but yeah when I read this I wasn't in the mood. Over all it was a fun read that went by rather quickly!
Wow!
This is such a well written twist-filled book.
When Jessica receives a message stating that will, her husband has cheated, she throws him out. But who is behind the photos? Is there anything to save? Do we really know people as well as we think.
I loved how detailed each character’s story was. I loved that it was a split (!) narrative between will and Jess. I loved the premise of the story. It kept me guessing throughout!
This author has a way of writing where you can picture yourself in the plot. Fascinating and refreshing read. Highly recommend!
The Split by S.E. Lynes
Jessica grew up with a father that was repeatedly cheating on her mother in their own home while her mother was at work, until her mother had enough and threw him out, so when Jessica finds out her husband Will is having an affair, she is furious and throws him out of their home.
Will is a life coach, he helped a client escape a bad marriage but he cannot explain to Jessica as its client confidentiality. When Will is at his lowest feeling homeless and heartbroken, he meets Ian Robbins at a bar. Ian becomes a wonderful friend to Will, someone Will can rely on, Ian puts Will up in an apartment rent free and they spend lots of time together. Will thinks he has finally made a true friend but is Ian really what he portrays himself to be?
I loved this book! At first it was a little slow but I loved all the twists and action in the last quarter of the book.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for a copy of this eBook in exchange for an honest review.
Without a doubt, this is Lynes' BEST BOOK YET!! I've read every single one, and this is the one to beat for sure! Never has the word communication bounced round my brain as much as it did whilst reading this. It has it all - great characters, a fantastic plot, tension, drama, and a nail biting, sphincter clenching climax. Honestly brilliant. Just brilliant.
The Split by S.E. Lynes follows a fractious break-up and the aftermath. It is a recommended, average domestic psychological thriller.
Jessica and Will are married and have two children. Jessica works long hours in London and is the main support for the family. Will is a life coach and the main care taker for the children. The morning after they celebrated their anniversary Jessica received pictures of Will, by all appearances, having an affair with another woman. When she confronts him, he says it's not what she thinks but he can't talk about it. She kicks him out of the house. This is the start of bigger problems than their inability to talk to or trust each other.
Admittedly, I was not a fan of The Split. The pluses are I read it to the end. The plot is interesting, but average. There are plenty of secrets and twists. The narrative moves at a fast pace. It gets all the points for escapism and a sense of dread and danger. The anger and frustration with each other seems realistic. The characters are unlikable and gullible. As I was reading, I predicted to myself early on what would happen and who would be responsible. I was correct, repeatedly. Many readers will likely enjoy this for the diversion. Thanks to Bookouture for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.
the review will be published on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
Lots of non-communication and miscommunication. Lots of twists. Took roughly 200 pages before the "action" started. Thank you for the opportunity to read and to review.
A gripping domestic thriller that explores the dark underbelly of suburban life, with compelling characters and a suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing until the very end.
