Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC to read and review. This is a lovely children's book written by Jenny Lynn Pease suitable for preschool and elementary aged children with full color, full page illustrations by Alessia Girasole, and due to be published April 2, 2024.
The story is about Harriet trying to figure out what to draw for an assignment to draw something you love. Someone else in class picks everything Harriet gets excited about (and doesn't that always happen!). Finally she decides to draw herself!
This is a positive story about a child learning to love drawing and love themselves too. A great topic to subtly address that stress some kids feel about making decisions for themselves for assignments. Definitely read as a PDF or hard copy vs. kindle to capture the design and color of the story. 5-stars.
Harriet is excited about art day at her school. Everyone is drawing something that they love. Harriet wants her picture to be unique but it seems like everyone else also likes something she likes. She spends the weekend trying to find that unique thing. She asks her family what they love, and everyone answers YOU! When it's Harriet's turn to share, she explains why she chose her item as something she loves, exhibiting a healthy self-esteem. The discussion ideas included in the back of the book only add to the appeal of this title.
Harriet Kippley’s art class was to have a party. They had to create a painting of something they loved for the event which was causing Harriet to become seriously worried. She simply did not know what to draw.
All her bright ideas had already been taken and no matter what other ideas her family came up with, they were already taken or simply far too silly. What was she to do. After much thinking she went and asked her family what it was they loved the most and that is what she painted.
Jenny Lynn Pearse has created a delightful story about loving yourself in this colourful and entertaining story of Harriet and her family, as they let Harriet know that she is the one who is special, that she is the one that they love.
Bright and colourful the artwork from Alissia Girasole captures the worry when Harriet struggles to come up with something that is suitable and different, as well as the happiness and joy when Harriet discovers answers to her worries. It also presents in a very gentle style, the important issues of learning to ask questions to try and get answers to the problem and understanding that it is alright to love yourself.
At the end of the story there is a lovely little section titled Questions and Ideas for You which helps understand the many facets of I Love Harriet Kippley while encouraging the reader to draw a picture of themselves and all the wonderful things they love about themselves.

I read this book to my five-year-old son and we both enjoyed it. In the story, Harriet Kippley has to draw something she loves, but all of her classmates are drawing what she wants to draw! She wants something unique and special, so she debates about what it should be and asks her family for help. With their support, she realizes what she loves is herself!
The story is a sweet take on confidence and self-love. I especially appreciated that Harriet turned to her family and found support through them. Kids believe they’re special and loved when parents communicate that, and this was a great story to reinforce that. My son also enjoyed the book and brought it up again a few days later. The pictures are beautiful. Overall, it’s a great read.
Many thanks Free Spirit Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this book! Self-love is so important, and I love that this is helping kids realize that they should love themselves!
This is a sweet story about a class assignment that young Harriet has to complete by drawing something that she loves. The only problem is that it feels like somebody else in her class has called dibs on everything that she loves.
Unicorns, ice cream and other things are already taken. So what can Harriet draw?
Some discussions with the people that she loves provides the answer. This is a cute story about self love, and has an important message to deliver.
This was so cute and empowering. I loved how her family tried to help and her response. In the end little Harriet chose herself to draw. The illustrations were so engaging my kids couldn’t take their eyes off of it.
