The Dead Guy Next Door by Lucy Score is a delightful blend of humor, suspense, and romance that keeps you hooked. Score’s signature wit shines, making even the quirkiest twists feel grounded and engaging. The characters are charming and relatable, and the plot balances laugh-out-loud moments with genuine tension, creating a fast-paced story that’s hard to put down. For anyone looking for a romance with a dash of mystery and plenty of laughs, The Dead Guy Next Door is an absolute winner.
This was my first book by Lucy Score! I was not disappointed. It was suspensful but also funny in my opinion. I will be reading more by this author!
I love Lucy Score's books and this new series did not disappoint. The Dead Guy Next Door is a captivating rom com and the perfect book if you're looking for something cute and funny.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door is the first book in the Riley Thorn series. It was entertaining from start to finish. In this, you will meet Riley Thorn. She hates her job, her cheating ex-husband, and wants nothing to do with the psychic life. It also doesn't hurt that her neighbors are downright hilarious, and she ends up meeting a delicious PI named Nick.
I absolutely loved Nick and Riley. The banter was bantering, and the sexual tension was brewing. I only wished that I didn't have to wait so long for the cork to pop and for the romance to unleash between them. Still, it was easy to devour this book, and I can't wait for their relationship to develop into something more. I mean, he already kicked the bachelor life cold turkey, so he's probably going to propose in the next book, right?
Other than that, I really want to know more about her abilities and what her grandma showing up in the end will do. Anyways, I'm ready for the next case because I have a feeling everyone is going to somehow be involved again. I'm hoping Daisy the cow can get some action in any fight since Burt the lion dog already did.
I really need whatever Lucy Score has been drinking, that gives her the ability to write stories that are madcap funny AND sexy AND mysterious AND full of found family vibes AND just nothing but fun to read. Woman can do no wrong in my book at this point, and every single thing she writes is on my instant buy list. This one is a great rec for anyone who loved the campier episodes of Charmed and grew up on Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, but also binge watches sexy cop/PI shows (mmmh, that Nick Santiago is yummy) and likes their septuagenarians sassy (lol). Quite the rollercoaster of a ride!
The Dead Guy Next Door is Lucy Score's most hilarious and cozy read to date! Riley Thorn is a hot mess, divorced and broke she has now been relegated to living with a group of geriatrics! Not to mention the whole psychic thing ruining her life one vision at a time. This is the absolute perfect time for a smoking hot PI to show up looking for one of her neighbors, who just has the bad grace to be the subject of her most recent vision - where he dies! And just because the universe can't give her a break, the vision proves to be true when said neighbor turns up dead under mysterious circumstances. Now they are stuck together trying to solve this mystery before Riley gets blamed!
The shenanigans that ensue in this book are just chef's kiss perfection! Whether they are sexy shenanigans, geriatric shenanigans or just general verbal sparring shenanigans it is all just so amazing that it is difficult not to read this in one sitting. Beware you will find yourself singularly focused on reading this book, you will be the John Wick of reading. If someone dares kill your reading spree, you might just go on a John Wick retribution "killing spree". Where most of Lucy's books are high in the emotional parts, this one is rich in hilarity. The plot is still complex and gritty, but it is covered in a laffy taffy covering that will have you LOLing.
Honestly, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to read this book. The only thing I can think of is that you are so used to Lucy ripping your heart out, stomping on it and then repairing it, that you just can't pivot to her making you pee your pants in hilarity. Which, sounds like a personal problem to me. In all fairness, this is not what I would call a "normal" Lucy Score novel and while I absolutely adore that about it, I can see how it could be off-putting to others because it might seem unexpected.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to continue the series. It is very reminiscent of some of my other favorite hilarious cozy mystery authors, namely Jessie Q. Sutanto. I have long been a Lucy Score fan and will read whatever she writes, but this one just hit different and I couldn't have been more pickled about it. I will be screaming about this book for a long time and to a large subset of readers because I truly believe there is something in Riley's shenanigans for everyone. Thanks for another excellent novel Lucy, now excuse me while I go binge the rest of the series.
THE DEAD GUY NEXT DOOR was a fun and zany read, with plenty of humor and crazy characters. The plot was interesting and enjoyable, but the book was simply too long despite this. The ending was a little over the top but was still fun. Would read the next one but wish these books could be condensed a bit.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the opportunity to read and review THE DEAD GUY NEXT DOOR.
possibly psychic cozy mystery, but in a very cool way. a fun little work that deserves a lot more attention than it probably will get.
Thanks, Bloom Books, for the review copy via Netgalley. (Available now)
In this first in a series of rom-com mysteries, we meet Riley (the psychic) and Nick (the private investigator). There’s banter, chemistry, lots of quirky side characters, and a cozy murder (or two) to solve, ala Scooby and the Gang.
Ya’ll, this had me grinning like an idiot while reading. It was making my husband suspicious (“Why are you smirking?”), but it was worth it. (As was the surprising length! It flew by so quickly, I had no idea it was around 500 pages.)
I like Riley. Despite being divorced and living in a glorified flop house with a bunch of elderly eccentrics, she’s not a hot mess. She does her job, makes her bed, and is funny and spunky. I would be friends with her if she lived in my zip code.
This series will be the perfect palate cleanser between heavier reads or when you want a book to make you happy.
A rom-com where a psychic teams up with a private investigator to solve a murder? I never knew I needed this in my life!
The first 10-15% was slow for me and I thought I'd made a mistake in starting this book. Some author's backlist titles are clearly their earlier works as they're less refined, etc... I thought this one might be one of them, but then things started to pick up and I was along for the hilarious ride. Yes, this has some very outlandish scenarios, but I was fully invested in Riley Thorn and Nick Santiago's relationship.
Riley's life is at a standstill after a horrible divorce. All she wants is to be normal, yet her psychic abilities keep hindering that. Nick's a typical forever bachelor intent on living by his own rules as a private investigator. They're thrown together when a mutual acquaintance is murdered.
I loved how their relationship progressed and how their backstories came into it. Their quirkiness and dynamic worked well and I laughed at the crazy antics and side characters. I was sad for the book to end. Fortunately, there are more titles in this series and I am definitely continuing for more Riley and Nick.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review an advanced copy of this novel. I highly enjoyed it and will be recommending it to others.
"The Dead Guy Next Door" is a fun, fast-paced, and provided plenty of laughs to keep me turning the pages. Riley Thorn's life is far from ordinary, with clairvoyant visions she’s trying to ignore, quirky elderly roommates, and a murder next door. Add in Nick Santiago, a "charming" private investigator with a bad-boy streak, and you’ve got a mystery packed with humor and sizzling chemistry. While some parts were a little long, the humor made it a great palette cleanser and an overall entertaining read.
I already love Lucy Score, so I had to request this series. So. Much. Fun. It’s reminiscent of the Stephanie Plum series but with a psychic twist some much needed spicy scenes. Loooooooved it. About to get started on the next one!
I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
This was a great read! I would recommend it to a friend. I loved it! Five stars. This book is a captivating exploration of human emotions and relationships. The narrative unfolds through the lives of richly developed characters, each facing unique challenges and growth. The author’s prose is both lyrical and engaging, drawing readers into the story with vivid imagery and relatable experiences.
For fans of Elle Cosimano and Janet Evanovich, this series reads like something that you should be watching on tv. You’ll love all of the quirky characters and be on the edge of your seat with wanting more.
Y’all, why didn’t I start reading this series sooner??? It has made me cackle so, so much. I found the first two books to be especially bingeable.
Life should be easier than this.
Really.
Riley Thorn finds herself divorced, single, strapped for cash, working a soul-sucking job, and living on the third floor of a mansion that has both seen better days and is filled with residents decades older than herself. As if all of that wasn’t enough of a kick-in-the-pants, she keeps getting psychic flashes and visions about the people around her.
And, oh yeah, one of her housemates just ended up dead.
Nick Santiago rarely encounters a situation he can’t charm his way out of (or a lady he can’t charm the pants off of). Originally sent to serve papers to Riley Thorn’s now unalived housemate, he’s since been hired to track down the killer. And that attractive, eligible psychic (Riley) that lives across the hall from the victim may just be the woman he needs in his bed for the rest of his life—ummm…I mean the woman he needs to help him crack the case.
Few authors can make me laugh out loud the way Lucy Score can. I giggled, snickered, and cackled my way through this book. From the antics of the elderly housemates to the eccentricities of Riley’s family to the outrageousness of her ex and the banter between Riley and Nick, I was cracking up.
I also loved the chemistry between Riley and Nick, the found family aspects of the novel, and the oneupmanship/competitiveness between Nick and Riley’s spiritual advisor, Gabe.
What a fun start to the series!
I received a copy of the ebook from Bloom Books. All review opinions my own.

I just love Lucy Score although this series wasn't my favorite, not as much as some of her other book series. I do like that she got into the mystery genre but for me something seemed to be missing. I did enjoy the characters and will definitely read the rest of the series to see how the story progresses.
Thanks to NetGalley, Lucy Score, and Sourcebooks Bloom books for allowing me to review this ARC!
Lucy Score did it again! Her characters are always dynamic, easy to identify with, and HILARIOUS! This series is sure to be action packed and entertaining...much like her Knockemout series!
