In this dual POV ( third person writing style), Riley Thorne is a new Divorcee who has been experiencing hallucinations. Perhaps her mom may be right and they are actually psychic visions. As she is going through this, Nick, a private invesitatgor shows looking for possible clues on a neighbor gone missing. The two form an unlikely pair as they try to solve the case.
I enjoyed this book so much! It was such a unique story and I found myself laughing throughout. Perfect combination of Romantic comedy with a splash of suspense to it.
I have read several of Lucy Score's books before. I knew it would be a fun read but I was pleasantly surpsrised by how original it was compared to her other books. I loved every one of the side characters as well. I don't think I found a portion of the book slow or dragging. It was a fast paced fun ride.
A must read for anyone looking for a a comedic read!
I liked this book a lot and am looking forward to reading the next in the series. I wasn’t sure at first how I was going to like it because I had to reread the beginning because the book throws you right in but as I read more I began to like and root for the characters and how their story developed. There were twists and turns that kept me on my toes and I didn’t want to put the book down. The characters were quirky and fit well together to help the story build. I’m hoping for characters to return in the next book and the story to continue! What a great start to the series!
Riley and Nick are my new favorite duo and I cannot wait to continue reading their story! This book is utterly charming because of the fantastic line up of unique characters. Riley steps into an entirely new way of life, learning to embrace her clairvoyant gifts (hello trainer Gabe!), proving to all she didn't need the awful ex-husband who seems to keep wanting to pester her, and finding herself quickly falling for Nick, the gorgeous PI who showed up at her door. If you love a bit of adrenaline pumping action with your romance reads, this is a fabulous choice!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a very much a me not you thing. I was excited for this book, but it just didn't hit the mark for me sadly.
If you need a good laugh, then this book is it for you! Lucy Score had me cackling during this whole book.
Riley is a psychic, who doesn't want to be a psychic, but her family is constantly trying to get her to embrace her gift. She keeps having visions of things that are coming true and she finally can't keep ignoring this gift when one of the tenants in her building is murdered. Enter hot PI Nick, he's been trying to get in touch with this fellow tenant and has come across Riley in the process before his demise. They enter into a fake relationship when they are being looked at as possible suspects. Meanwhile they are also trying to solve the case to clear their own butts.
The chemistry between the two is instant and their banter was hilarious! I really enjoyed the side characters that are Riley's fellow tenants as well, they were hilarious. Her family is super quirky but they added a lot of fun to the story as well. This was a fun mystery/rom-com and I thought she did it very well. It really gave me a Stephanie Plum vibe if you've read those books, and they are just as hilarious! This is the perfect light hearted mystery book that isn't a typical thriller/mystery book. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!
This was definitely a fun read for me! I love Lucys writing style. The comedic banter was just chefs kiss. There were so many characters that I just took a liking too which IMO is hard to do with side characters! I will definitely be reading more from this author soon!
I have come to enjoy Lucy Score's books, so was excited to discover her Riley Thorn Series. The series itself is not technically new, just recently reprinted/rebranded after the success of Score's Knockemout Series. I love a good mystery, especially when combined with Romance. This story follows pyschic Riley Thorn who is kind of having a bad time. She is denying her psychic powers, recently divorced from a terrible narcissist, working a terrible job, and living in a not so great living situation. Through a humorous series of events that begin with her fortelling and then witnessing, her neighbors murder. She ends up teaming up with the good looking PI Nick, who of course wants to remain a bachelor and not fall for Riley who clearly wants monogamy. Score manages a laugh out loud story with a fun cast of characters and a great romance. It took me some time to get through the book, not because it was bad, just long. I saw later books in the series run a bit shorter. Will probably finish the series and will definitely be recommending. (Thank You Netgalley and Sourcebooks)
I was excited to get this book, but it did fall a bit flat for me and just did not keep my attention. It was a bit long, the storyline was okay. I will sure read this author again, just was not my favorite. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the e-arc.
2.5 rounded up
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.
This is my second read by Lucy Score and it was different than the first title I read of hers. I enjoyed this book, but it felt a bit chaotic and overwhelming for me at times (but that's me and my autistic brain thinking it would be a good idea to read this book while at an overstimulating library conference lol).
I loved the plot twists towards the end and how the main female character is a psychic.
This book had me cackling. Like all of Lucy Score’s books, I really enjoyed it and found it to be a fun, hysterical and easy read.
Riley is a divorced psychic who lives in a mansion with some elderly “relatives.” She works at a dead end job and feels pretty down on herself when she meets Nick, a hot PI. Soon after, Riley has a vision of a murder in her building and joins Nick on his quest to figure out who did it. Her grandma, a renowned psychic, sends a hot spiritual guide to help Riley embrace her powers. Gabe, her spiritual guide, is equally hysterical and adds an extra bit of laughs to this wild ride.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom books for a copy of this book. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
This one was good, but not amazing. I found it a little slow even for a romcom. All the while like a lot was happening? It was a strange experience. I felt similar with a popular fantasy series. It checks all the boxes but almost too perfectly? It’s a chunky book too. I’m sure it’ll be loved by many but I’m left feeling unsure.
Riley Thorn just wants normal. A regular job, a regular family, a regular guy.
Instead she’s got a terribly boring job, a family full of psychics, and an ex-husband who took her for all she’s worth.
So divorced, alone, and broke, she moves into a crumbling mansion with a pack of ridiculous elderly roommates.
Right about then, Nick, the sexy PI shows up looking for one of her neighbors…who turns up dead. And maybe, just maybe, Riley had a vision that will help solve this mess.
Unfortunately, she’s also a prime suspect.
Can Nick help catch the killer and clear Riley’s name or will she do it herself?
It’s a loud book with a large cast of characters who are weird and goofy and ever present. Farcical. Slapstick. It also feels like it has every stereotype out there. It reads like an ensemble and honestly for me, it was just too much, the most offending part being the final showdown with the villain. There’s a car chase, a gun fight, a fountain, masked vigilantes, good cops, crooked cops…I mean, a little bit of a lot.
No doubt it appeals to the many, just not to this reader. And at 540 pages? Yikes.
Thanks to @netgalley the ARC to read and review. Available now.
A slow burn but I absolutely love Riley Thorn. I cannot wait for the next book!

Ridiculously fun and hilariously entertaining. Welcome to my Ted Talk on why this is your spiritual sign to read The ☠️ Guy Next Door.
1. Who doesn’t like a somewhat tortured ex-cop turned into a PI that swears he doesn’t do commitment only to be completely obsessed with our FMC?
2. Who doesn’t like a strong FMC down on her luck but about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime?
3. Oh, did I mention she’s psychic but absolutely refuses to settle into her powers? Yet, can’t also escape them?
4. I would like to mention now that the trouble these two thirty somethings get into is hilarious 😅
5. And everyone around them is a little crazy hence making everything better 😂
6. There’s a cow
7. It’s a Lucy Score book
Thank you for your time.
As a fellow Harrisburg local, I thoroughly enjoyed Lucy Score's "The Dead Guy Next Door." It was exciting to see my city featured in the book, and Score never disappoints. The mix of mystery and romcom was just right, making it a delightful and entertaining read. The characters were all unique, and Lucy’s witty banter added to the charm. I'm definitely looking forward to continuing with this series!
Thank you to NetGalley, the Lucy Score and the SOURCEBOOKS for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I sadly had to DNF this book. It started out too slowly for me to become interested and Riley’s psychic also left me disinterested. I have always LOVED Lucy Score books so I’m shocked that this book fell flat for me, maybe I’m just not in the right mood for it?
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for this book!
I have come to really love and cherish Lucy Score. She is able to mix slow burn elements with well timed heat between her leading characters. She also ALWAYS delivers on a great ensemble cast of characters that you get excited to learn more about in the rest of the series. I love how she tried her hand in mixing the romance and mystery/paranormal elements. Though I wish I would’ve saved this book for an October read — I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I've seen so much about this series, and I was really excited to get started! I found that The Dead Guy Next Door was really cute, but possibly a little longer than was really necessary to get the point across. I felt like it dragged quite a bit at various points, BUT at the end of the day I was really glad that I worked through those sections, because the total package was totally worth it. Really enjoyable!
I absolutely adored this book by Lucy score. It was super fun and entertaining and I loved meeting all the main side characters that she invented for this world. I love the relationship between Nick and Riley the development of their relationship throughout the story. This whole book was to fun and such a great read. I’m so excited that there are three other books in this series because I now plan on reading them all!
As someone who loves both romance and mystery, I was very excited to read this book. I've heard a lot of wonderful things about the author and I know she is very talented. While I found the book to be humorous and overall enjoyable, it didn’t quite hit hard enough in either genre for me. In my opinion, there wasn’t a sufficient amount of romance in the book and I found the mystery to be mostly dull as well. I think die-hard thriller fans will be bothered by the lack of an intriguing mystery and I think romance devotees will be bored with the lackluster romance.
I will say, I thought the main characters (namely, Riley and Nick) were well written and I wish more of the book had just focused on them. I didn’t like the supporting cast as much and they seemed to feel more like fictional characters written to be amusing rather than meaningful players in this story. I felt the book should have focused on more of the mystery or more of the romance, rather than a little bit of both.
That being said, I think the writing was very good and for most of the book I was interested in seeing how it would end. However, the ending took way too long to come. This book was very, very long and I think it really could have been shortened and had many scenes cut. While the story involved murder and there were many times characters were in major peril, I never felt like the stakes were that high because of the playful and almost farcical tone of the writing. Overall, I might recommend this story to someone who’s looking for a very lighthearted read with fun characters and a bit of mystery, but it wasn't a huge hit for me.
