RILEY THORN & THE DEAD GUY Riley Thorn Book 1 by Lucy Score
I know when I pick up a Lucy Score book I am getting a fun, light hearted, very entertaining read. There is always plenty of witty banter that makes you laugh out loud, a little mystery, a group of elderly roommates, plenty of twists and turns. This is the story of Riley Thorn who is a psychic and Nick Santiago who is a private investigator. This is 5 stars.

As usual Lucy Score does not disappoint! Once I started I couldn't put this book down. It has everything that you would want in a rom-com; it's funny, spicy and so relatable to real life. Definitely can't recommend enough!

5/5 stars

This was my first book by Lucy Score. The book was a chaotic, fun read and not what I expected based on what others have told me about her other books. Looking forward to reading more!

The psychic stuff was a little much for me personally, so it took some time to commit to this book. BUT the storyline kept me captivated - I enjoyed the characters (so relatable, so fun!), mystery (a perfect rom com mystery), and writing (Lucy Score, can I read all your other books by you?). A longer book that felt like a quick read with the fast paced action. Would recommend, as long as you're okay with the psychic pieces or remove yourself from reality.

It's a little slow at the start, but it reads like a hilarious & chaotic movie! You feel connected with the characters; they all have great quirks. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. If you are looking for the next KNOCKEMOUT series, this is different but just as endearing.

Another fun book from Lucy but this was such a treat because the characters (especially Riley!) was SO different!! I loved the idea of chasing "normal" to realize it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. Now I need to go back and read the rest in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley; the author, and the publisher for the arc.

As a huge fan of Lucy Score- I was not a fan of this book. It was odd, and way too long. I think I’ll stick to her romance books.

The Dead Guy Next Door was much different than any other Lucy Score book. In a good way! I loved every second of this book. It was fun and quick to read. I enjoyed that it had a mysterious vibe throughout, along with some romance. I’m excited to read the rest of the series.

First of all, I want to say thank you for the ARC!

I think this story had promise. The psychic thing was fun, as well as the little crime mystery plot. Characters were quirky as well.

I think my biggest issue with this book was it was SO long. Probably could have been trimmed closer to 300 pages and it would have been a great, quirky story. I found by the end of the book, I was just getting very bored and wanted things to conclude. The climax scene was also just a bit outrageous for my personal liking.

The romance was cute! I just think (and this is completely personal preference), that pet names like “honey”, “baby”, etc just make me cringe- so I’m not the biggest fan of that.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Bloom for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, I love Lucy Score. Her writing style is spot on and her storytelling is wonderful. This book was weird and wonderful. I loved Nick and Riley and the cast of oddball characters.

3.5 stars.l rounded up to 4.

Riley is divorced and broke. Oh, and she is psychic. She finds her next door neighbor dead. Nick, a private investigator, is determined to find out what happened.

Must read! This book is full of witt, romance, psychic readings, and elderly neighbors, family and spirit guides that really make this book.

I really enjoyed this book! It has the hot, grumpy P.I., a dead guy, elderly roommate chaos, a spite cow, a tarot dealing mother, whodunit?, fart jokes, and a reluctant psychic. A comical, romantic, murder/suspense story that was just the right speed. This is one of those stories you like to read after reading a strong fantasy or a long series. It’s such a nice little breather in between with everything you could ask for! I gave it 3.5 stars out of 5. It was funny and romantic with action and murder, but it was a little too long of a story for me.

Dead Guy Next Door by Lucy Score, book one in the Riley Thorn series, is filled with quirky and unique characters, captivating the reader. Riley Thorn divorced and living in an old mansion with a bunch of elderly roommates, is reluctant psychic. She experiences clairvoyant visions, visions that she doesn’t want; including one involving a neighbor. Nick Santiago, a hot private investigator shows up, determined to help her solve the mystery; and things suddenly get interesting. A perfect light and entertaining read that will lift your mood.

While I had never read a Lucy Score book before, I had heard extremely mixed reviews, and was interested in exploring a work of hers that was less controversial after being on booktok for a few years. When I received the opportunity to read The Dead Guy Next Door I knew it would be the perfect Lucy Score book for me, and it was. I was coming off an odd spurt of having read a lot of psychic rom coms (Happy Medium and Looking for Love in All the Haunted Places) and was excited to read one with a full murder mystery as well (I am a mystery lover). I always love rom coms with full side plots more than those without, and The Dead Guy Next Door delivered. I fell in love with not only Riley and Nick but the full cast of characters alongside them. Throughout the book I found myself thinking "I can't wait to read the next one" and hoping for another Riley Thorn book. To watch her and her quirky elderly roommates along with the rest of her family and friends (and Nick) all solve crimes together for a full series of books would bring me a lot of joy. I easily ranked this 4 stars for the realistic character struggles and how the plot and character dynamics all changed and grew throughout the book was done with an artful and practiced hand. While the writing style was very casual and not very poetic it was fun and allowed for the vibes of the book to be emulated in the way that the story was told. I enjoyed every element of this book and other than the writing style it was a very unique and well-handled composition.

The Dead Guy Next Door is a very different book than others I’ve read by the same author, though that’s not a bad thing. The story has a romance but it’s mainly a mystery/caper. There are a lot of twists and turns. The only thing I found jarring about the story was the amount of characters involved. I think a lot of people were introduced because this is the beginning of a series, but it was a bit distracting from the main characters. Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Bloom Books for the ARC to review!

Anyone who really loves Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series or the FInley Donovan books will love this story. It is filled with chases, escapes, bad guys and high-jinx. It was a little long for my taste (I like my books 330 pp or fewer) as it is about 400 pp. There's more swearing than I want to read, but most of the time it fit the characters. The main characters and side characters are all fun, interesting and likeable (or despicable, as some should be). The clairvoyant family is added fun most definitely It makes me want to stay far, far away from Harrisburg, PA, though!
