There is no reason why I should not be obsessed with this book. It has everything I love: romance, mystery, and humor. Yet, I could not get into it. Reading this felt similar to those office meetings where you go in with an objective but then rather than talk about said objective everyone just chit chats about TV shows or the latest TikTok trends. Maybe it’s just the timing, and if I read it in a year I’ll love it. Also, I dislike the cover art. It makes it look like a book a child in seventh grade would read.
Thank you, NetGalley, for a copy of “Riley Thorn and the Dead Guy Next Door” by Lucy Score.
I loved this book! I breezed through it. It reminded me of the cute and quirky cozy mystery book I like to read but with the spice you expect from Lucy Score
I would rate this a 3.5 so rounded up to 4 for this reviews purposes. This is one of those books that has it all: murder, romance, corruption, quirky old people and even psychics! It’s also about 200 pages too long. Halfway through I was ready for it to be over. It started fun and the main character of Riley is interesting. i just wish I had grown to care about anyone else. Thank you NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. It reminded me of the Stephanie Plum shenanigans and crime solving with the twist of a house full of eccentric mosey old people. Riley Thorn is a born psychic who,is denying those abilities and lying about it. She is humiliated because her e husband has made a fool of her and continues to do so when he proposed on air to the current news person that he had take her place after getting her fired and suing her for alimony. She is now forced to live in a half way home or sorts with various old people in a gothic run down mansion or sorts. She is fighting to survive, her grandmother is after her to se what skills she really possesses, and her mother just wants her to dims hippy style happiness. Nick is an ex cop that is now a PI. He is your traditional law enforcement kind of guy that is amazing to look at, hot headed, and knows it all. Riley should have never opened the door to ask Nick why he was looking for her crabby gross neighbor Dickie. Had she just ignored it, she would have ignored the visions and never met Nick Santiago. But the cards had bigger plans for her.
Such a fun read & I can’t wait to continue this series. The characters are hilarious with lots of laugh out loud moments.
I wasn't expecting the touch of paranormal in this story but it made things rather fun. The plot was fine but the book just felt so... long. The characters aren't as strong as I would have liked. They're funny and they had their moments but I'm not sure I was particularly invested in any of them. I do Riley's psychic abilities was interesting though. Nick's character got better over time but I'm still waiting to like him. I'm still conflicted about how to feel about him. I am also hoping Gabe continues to have a role in the rest of the series because I loved the bickering between the three of them.

I believe I have one of my new favorite series! This book was giving banter, grumpy/sunshine, psychics, crazy antics, and a heck of a plot! I feel like 10 stars isn't even enough!
Riley is a psychic but refuses to step into her powers. Visions hit and she tries hard to push them down but her powerful spirit guides persist. When she witnesses a murder before it happens, she decides to tell the cops and becomes a suspect.
Nick, former cop, now PI and a little vigilante gets thrust into Riley's life. Thrust so far in fact, that Riley is now his fake fiance. Nick swears he is going to be a forever bachelor but Riley does something to him like he's never experienced. The energy is palpable anytime they are near each other.
These two and their wild crew all work together to solve the crime Riley saw while proving her innocence. I swear you will be laughing out loud, gasping, and cheering multiple times while reading this book. Go get it now and start reading! You will not be disappointed.
I absolutely loved this book and I am thrilled it's a series so Riley and Nick's antics won't be coming to an end any time soon!
Thank you so very much to @NetGalley and @scorelucy for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was witty, emotional and humorous read all in one. Lucy score knows how to deliver to pull on your heart strings and bring two unlikely people together. I very much enjoyed this book and look forward to whatever Lucy comes up with next.
I received this arc from NetGalley and Bloom Books in exchange for an honest review.
This book was different from what I usually read, and different from the Lucy Score books I’ve read before. I liked it, the psychic aspect made it more interesting and I enjoyed it.
This is a really great story of a reluctant psychic and the PI she meets when he knocks on her neighbor's door. She has just had a vision of her neighbor being murdered, so she confronts him. What ensues is a fun romance with great mystery.
The story is well told and humorous. I love Riley and Nick and can't wait to read more about them. I recommend it!
Pretty much the perfect blend of murder mystery, found family hijinks and slow burn romance between the main investigators, I had so much fun reading this 😭
Also, I LOVED the supernatural element in this one!! (FMC is a reluctant psychic) -- I didn't really read the blurb so this was an amazing surprise!
TWs - murder, death, kidnapping, gun violence
-- ty to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy!
I couldn’t get into this book no matter how much I tried. I love this authors other works but I just couldn’t get into this.
This series has been repackaged by Bloom. It’s a cozy mystery series that also has romance.
The main character is Riley Thorn. She comes from a family of psychics. I love when characters have psychic abilities. And love that she solves crimes.
Nick Santiago was such a great male lead. And I loved his PI job. I really liked the romance.
Riley has such a great family and neighbours. This was such a fun first book! Just a bit long for a cozy mystery.
This is my favorite series from Lucy Score! It's chaos with senior citizens, psychics and a couple hotties! I laugh each time I read this and that is about 5 times now. I never get bored and its funnier each time. I can't say enough awesome things about this book and these characters.
A must read!
I was looking forward to reading something new from Lucy Score, but I found myself getting extremely bored around 40% into the book and struggling to make it to 90%. As with all of Lucy's books, the middle section drags on and I couldn't help but wonder why it's so long. Despite that, I did find the story to be cute and unique, and I also enjoyed the supporting characters.
Absolutely hysterical! I laughed out loud repeatedly throughout this book so much my face started hurting.
Riley is such a likable and fun loving character, and Nick was the charming yet bad boy you’d dream about. Their banter was absolutely “chefs kiss” adorable and entertaining. Then throw in a murder to solve! It’s was fantastic!!!!’
Such a great slow burn, duel POV book! Can’t wait to continue on to the second book. Highly highly recommend!!
This book started out really strong! Lucy Score is so talented at banter. I laughed out loud many times.
As with a lot of Score books, I started to get bored midway through. I often feel like her books could be 100-150 pages shorter.
I also hoped for more spicy scenes. There was lots of build up, but only a couple.
Overall, I enjoyed the characters and would continue with the series.
3 stars - I liked this book overall, although it did drag on for me. It easily could have been 100+ pages shorter. The characters were likable, though predictable. I might read the next book in the series.
Lucy Score is a must read author for me, and I love romantic thrillers, so this request was high on my list of needs!! I was obsessed with the characters, especially the supporting ones! I'm so excited that this is a series and can't wait to read the rest!!
The supporting cast of characters totally steal the show in this book! Riley is a non-practicing clairvoyant. All the women in her family have some sort of psychic abilities. Some have greater powers than others. All accept it as their right. Riley though, just wants to be normal, unfortunately for her, she has a vision of a murder and the victim... her housemate/neighbor. She does what she can to prevent it, but in the end, nothing works, and now she is the number one suspect. Enter Nick. A PI hired to find the murderer. A hot PI. The attraction is a two way street. Too bad he is a bachelor who has no desire at all to settle down with one woman, and she is still trying to get over a divorce. Much fun is to be had as the two, along with the rest of the residents, frolic around gathering intel. Did I mention the housemates are all in their later years of life. Don't let them fool you though, they are as wirey as a young whippersnapper. ;) There is that sexual tension between the two. There is also a bit of jealousy when a second man enters Riley's life unexpectedly. There is a lot of action in regards to the mystery. There are some thrill-like scenes that keep Riley and Nick busy. Poor Riley really takes a beaten, but she's a tough cookie and won't let a little shooting slow her down. As I mentioned, the side characters really are a hoot. You will laugh out loud a lot while reading. :) There is the romance running in the background but the sexual content is limited. (Though there is some strongish language.) It alternates POVs. It is hinted (in the author notes) that this may turn into a series, and I seriously hope so! These characters are so much fun! :D
