As a Freida McFan, I actually already read this book. I didn’t realize when I saw NetGalley with a Freida and quick requested it! Any and ALL Freida books are AMAZING! I love them all. I read this in the summer of 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed it! I often recommend Freida books to friends and anyone asking for book suggestions!!

I am definitely a fan of Freida McFadden’s writing. One by One is another fast-paced thriller that I simply didn’t want to put down. There were twists and turns, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, there’s another twist. I read this book in a day - it was that good. A very satisfying thriller with a satisfying ending!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.

Yet another quick read by Freida! I enjoyed this one and was definitely thrown by the end of the book. Good characters, non stop action and kept me guessing. Can’t wait to share with my regular thriller readers!

Well, that was a quick read! 😱 I read that book in a little bit more than 24 hours, and it’s just not something I do anymore, like ever! 🤓
I was hooked from the first chapters, and I had to know what was going to happen next; it was addictive!
It’s my second book by this author, and once more, I didn’t get *most* of the twists right… 🤫🤣 And the ending, it completely blew my mind! 🤯
I really enjoyed the past timeline, which was set from the point of view of the antagonist reminiscing about their childhood, and it made the ending so much more believable and enjoyable.
I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a fast-paced psychological thriller, with some Cabin in the Woods vibes and a twisty ending that will have you put your book down in a state of jaw-dropping awe! 😱

A hard to put down thriller! I couldn't stop reading this murder mystery. I love Frieda books, and this one didn't disappoint. If you're looking for a fast-paced, no smut book, this is for you! Highly recommended for thriller/ mystery readers.

This is a quick read with lots of twist including an ending that I did not see coming. Being so lost in the woods seemed a bit unrealistic but overall good plot.

Completely unique story again by this fabulous author about a couple in a strained marriage going away for the weekend with their oldest friends. Twisty, great characters and kseos you guessing!!

One By One was a quick read, but has probably been my least favorite books written by this author. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, the characters just were not as developed as her other novels.
The book follows two POVs- Claire’s and Anonymous while they go on a camping trip with six friends and all the baggage they bring along with them.
This book kept me guessing until the very end and was overall a good read. Would be a perfect beach read, or palette cleanser between heavier books.

I still can't believe I didn't read one of Freida McFadden's stories until recently, but I've immediately become a fan of her writing. I couldn't resist adding One By One straight away; I mean, have you read that blurb?! I have a weak spot for stories with a remote setting... Add a locked room vibe (only in the form of a huge forest), and there was no way I was going to be able to pass up on this book. I'm glad I didn't, because I ended up having a brilliant time reading it!
One By One uses a dual POV structure, where we switch between Claire and an Anonymous POV that is clearly ment to be one of the group going on the trip. Especially the second POV was very cleverly written, as it gives you more insight in their motivation while also making it hard to guess who is behind it all. I definitely didn't see that big twist coming! Things can be said about the credibility of it all, but it sure made for an entertaining ride. Claire's POV was also engaging considering it got all the action in the present with them being lost in the forest and the group going down in numbers one by one.
It's actually kind of funny how much I enjoyed One By One considering it includes a major pet peeve that usually makes me want to run away screaming. Oh yes, this story both has active cheating going on AND a love triangle to deal with, but strangely enough I didn't even care. The characters themselves aren't exactly likeable either, with the cheating and the secrets along with their behavior in the forest. Somehow, it works in this story though; I think the main reason is that there is just too much going on to truly contemplate their actions. Plus, they were dropping like flies by then, so why waste time thinking about whether you like them or not?!
The writing itself is extremely engaging, and I simply couldn't stop reading. The only reason I didn't finish it in one sitting is because I simply didn't have the time... Make sure to clear your schedule if you decide to read this story, because it will be VERY hard to put One By One down once the characters are lost in the forest. Trigger warnings are in place for topics including child abuse, toxic relationships, suicide, bullying and graphic scenes as well as the previously mentioned infidelity.
One By One is my second Freida McFadden title and it has placed this author firm on my radar. I already know she will appear on my list of favorite new author discoveries in 2024! If you like your thrillers on the wild side with lots of action, a remote setting and bad things happening to characters that definitely seem to deserve it, One By One will tick those boxes and more.

I received this from the publisher for review. Reading a Freida McFadden book is like hanging out with your friend who always tells the best stories and you always have a good time. This was a fast paced binge-able book, told in the POV of Claire and also someone who goes by anonymous. Claire is off on a camping trip with her husband, who she can’t stand, and a group of couple friends. Things start to go terribly wrong and you don’t know who trust.
I read this in one day because I simply did not want to put this popcorn thriller down.

This is my first Freida McFadden read and I loved it! It’s a good “who done it” read. There were so many twists and turns, especially the twist at the end!
Thank you net galley for letting me read this wonderful book!

After the excellent Housemaid series by Freida McFadden, bingeing on her repertoire of works seemed only too right and that's how I landed this survival thriller of three couples lost in the wilderness.
Claire and Noah Matchett set forth on a week long trip to a luxury cabin in North Colorado with their friends - Claire's best friend Lindsay and her new boyfriend Warner, and Noah's best friend Jack and his wife, Michelle. What should have been a rejuvenating vacation and a break from their deteriorating marriage turns into a nightmare, when their minivan breaks down and the six of them are stranded in the middle of a forest. City slickers with rudimentary survival skills, the couples find themselves way out of their depth in the dangerous forest. One by one, each one succumbs to tragedy and Claire makes the horrific discovery that there is a murderer in their midst.
I hated the protagonist, Claire. She is written to be a flawed character, sure, but there was just so much whining about how much she despised her husband, over and over and over again. The first 25% of the book describes the onward journey of the group to the cabin and it bleeds with resentment that the Matchetts held for each other. The POV of the 'Anonymous' character was the saving grace in the book as it kept up a guessing game as to the killer's identity amidst the constant whining and bickering.
I am beginning to wonder if vigilante/avenging angel is a recurring theme in this author's plots. Two of the characters that were central to the plot had almost no background to them and were bumped off rather unceremoniously. However, I liked the denouement - just when I thought that the ending was too tidy for what had been a chaotic ride until then, a trojan horse is revealed to ensure that the killer has the last laugh.
Overall, suspenseful sure, but not as amazing as the Housemaid books. Thanks to Netgalley and Poison Pen for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

While "One by One," by Frieda McFadden is not original in its plot or writing, it was a fun thriller with a great twist that can easily be consumed in a day or two.
Six friends go away for a week together, and one by one they start to disappear. Who is responsible?
Much of the story felt redundant, and not very impressive. I did not particularly like the characters and the dynamics between all of them. I didn't feel connected to any of them, or like I was rooting for anyone in particular, even the narrator, Claire.
With that said, I think that was the point. This is a "surface level" story that is meant to be a good time, and not something you need to think too much about. I can forgive a lot of the story's flaws because it is a short, quick read that kept me engaged despite any literary shortcomings. Also, I thought the ending was great. It was personally my favorite part. McFadden definitely has a talent for writing twists, and she delivered in this book.
"One by One" is nothing groundbreaking, but it is a fun thriller you can read in one sitting and escape.

When a group of six friends make their way to an isolated inn, things go from bad to worse when their car breaks down leaving them stranded in the middle of the woods. With limited food, water, and directions to the inn, they struggle to find the place that they were supposed to stay at for a quiet retreat. What was supposed to be a couple's trip quickly turns into a murder mystery as each person gets picked off one by one. Who can you trust? Who will survive? And will anyone find their way to the inn?
Freida McFadden does it again! Can this woman possibly write a bad novel? Let me answer that—no! Anytime I read a Freida novel I try to predict the plot twists and just when I think the story is going one way, it goes in an entirely different direction. I think that's what makes her books so special. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't go on with my life until I figured out how it would end. And let's just say that I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
Read this book if you like crazy plot twists, unpredictability, psychological thrillers, binge reads, and dual POV's.

Title: One by One
Author: Frieda McFadden
Genre: Thriller
SPOILER ALERT!!
A 2 person point of view storyline with intriguing characters, left me guessing the entire time the whodunnit and I was still wrong! A married couple, their indiscretions and their friends on a weeks long trip. What was supposed to be a relaxing get away quickly turns into a deadly nightmare. Lost in the woods, everyone is a suspect.
I enjoyed McFaddens writing throughout the book. The main characters POV, Claire was spunky, sarcastic and one could definitely understand her struggles and emotions throughout the book. I went back and forth between feeling worried for her and at the same time disliking her. The story moved quickly but with a ton of detail regarding just several days worth of events.
I would highly recommend One by One to anyone who enjoys a good, quick storyline. The plot is maintained through the book and the ending leaves you rattled. Throughout the book you spend your time really thinking you knew who the "bad guy" is only to be completely mistaken!

I am a Freida fan. I have devoured several of her books cause they are fun, quick reads with insane twists. I did not like this one tho. The twist I still didn’t see coming but it was my least fav Freida read

Another good read from Freida. Fast paced with short chapters. The story was good and came together good but a bit far fetched.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Having read multiple books by this author, I found this story disappointing.
The plot is far-fetched (even for a fiction), ridiculous and to lacks the thrill factor. Then factoring in the repetitive statements and shallow characters made this difficult to finish.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for approving me for this ARC before the paperback of this came out.
I have been on a kick with Freida McFadden books so I was very excited to be approved for this. Her books run you around in circles and once you think you have it figured out, you realize you were totally wrong! (in my opinion anyway, haha). I must say though, this one was my least favorite and it didn't do it for me like her other books. Six friends go on a trip to the middle of the woods, but their van breaks down a little over halfway there. They decided to start walking because they believed the way they were going to the resort was the correct way, but they got easily lost. Just as you guessed, they start getting picked off one by one. The story starts getting repetitive and even though it is thrilling, it easily gets boring. The twist at the end was a big what the hell. It felt pretty stupid as to why what was happening was happening and I didn't feel convinced. Even though this one wasn't a favorite, it is still a short and fun read and I flew through the book within a couple of hours. If you're a fan of Freida McFadden, I say give this one a shot and form your own opinions about One by One.

One by One is right…… unless we’re referring to pages because I flew threw this book! As with most Freida McFadden books, I couldn’t put it down. Set in a remote cabin for a long weekend getaway, this one will have you holding on with non-stop twists and turns. Heart pounding, rollercoaster ride as we try to figure out who the killer is. Dual POV, anonymous character- what more could we ask for or expect from McFadden? This is a suspenseful thriller, full of survival & betrayal.
Thank you to NetGalley & Poisoned Pen Press for this ARC
