Freida McFadden delivers yet again with another whodunit thriller. I don’t know how she churns out books so quickly! She must sleep only three hours at night and have her meals brought to her at her computer.
I do quite enjoy a good survival thriller, since I’m a huge fan of the survival genre in general. Here we have three couples who are getting together for a much-needed vacation at an upscale hotel in the middle of a forest. Claire really needs to relax and hang out with anyone but her husband, Noah. Lindsay is showing up with someone new, and Jack is coming with his spouse.
And they’re off! Until Claire’s relatively new minivan breaks down two miles from the remote hotel. There’s no cell reception, either. Never fear—they can just hike the rest of the way! But then they start hearing and seeing disturbing things. Cue madness, mayhem, and what in the actual heck is going on.
One by one, “in this big, black forest…” (Rufus Wainwright’s “Crumb by Crumb” was in my head every time I read the title, and it’s very apropos here 😁)
And the moral of the story is: always listen to your gut (or the gut of your 7-year-old daughter).
My thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the advance copy. All opinions are mine.

2.5 ⭐️ I am a huge Freida fan but this one let me down a bit. As always the book was fast paced and easy to read. But I did get a little bored and I thought the motive was a little dumb. Usually with Freida’s books there such good tension and amazing twists but this one didn’t do it for me unfortunately. On to the next from Freida though.
Thank you so much NetGalley, the publisher and amazing author for the copy!

One by One is a fast-paced mystery thriller by the popular psychological thriller author Freida McFadden. This one is a 'deserted in the woods' storyline where the characters are mysteriously dying one by one after getting stranded.
The majority of the book is from Claire's POV who is definitely the main character at the centre of the friendship group. Sporadically throughout there is also chapters from 'Anonymous' which is hinted as one of the members of the group that may be the killer as the chapters get darker and darker. The mystery kept me guessing throughout and I really didn't know who to trust.
I really enjoy Freida's writing style, the short chapters go by so quickly it is hard to put her books down and it really increases the intensity.
Unfortunately the ending did let this book down for me, it was quite unsatisfying. I just don't think the pay off was as great as the brilliant set up, which is gutting when it comes to mysteries and thrillers. The twists weren't up to usual Frieda McFadden standard in my opinion.
Overall I did enjoy my time reading this book and will continue to pick up new releases from this wonderful author.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5
Thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press and Frieda McFadden for the opportunity to read this advanced reader copy.
Review posted to Goodreads and to be posted on Amazon, Waterstones and Instagram Stories on publication day.

Wow, really good read. Without giving away any of plot. I have to say this IS a true can't quit reading story. Excellent author to fit this all together smoothly. I recommend this to everyone who likes a really good mystery, as well as an action story.

One by One is a 293 page thriller of its finest. F.McFadden wrote an heartstopping thriller that had me guessing till the last page. Suspenseful, twisty and full of unexpected turns is this a read that I'll not forget about anytime soon.
Blurb:
Claire Matchett needs this trip. It will be a break from work and raising children. A chance to repair her damaged marriage. A week of hiking and hot tubbing with friends at a luxurious hotel in the woods, disconnected from the pressures of real life.
Then, on a lonely dirt road, Claire's minivan breaks down. With no cell reception, the group has no choice but to walk the rest of the way to their remote accommodation. But the forest is dark and difficult to navigate and, hours later, they are lost. Hopelessly lost.
As they venture deeper into the woods, the members of their party are struck down mysteriously, one by one. Are they being hunted? And by what―or who? As Claire's dream vacation descends into a nightmare, something becomes clear: only one of them will return home alive.
A story of betrayal and survival that will leave you wondering if there's any way out of the woods…

Thanks to NetGalley and Hollywood Upstairs Press for my copy of One By One by Freida McFadden. I would stretch this to 4.25 stars. Claire, along with her husband and friends, embark on a trip filled with R&R but car trouble lands them in the middle of the forest. She gets the suspicion that they’re being hunted and then her friends start dying one by one. Does she make it out alive? I admit, I thought I had this figured out at the 40% mark and I was dead wrong! Twist after twist keeps a reader hooked to figure out who the mystery killer is. At under 300 pages, it’s a great quick read!

Claire and her husband Noah are on holidays with four friends when their car breaks down. As they hike desperately through the woods to their hotel, they are slowly picked off, one by one…
In the vein of And Then There Were None, this engaging thriller was a really quick read. While I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as The Housemaid, I found it gripping and couldn’t put it down. I picked up on some clues, but it had me guessing, and the ending caught me off guard!
A great thriller to lose yourself in on the weekend, I read this one in one sitting.
Thank you Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

One by One turned out to be one of my favorite reads by Freida McFadden! Every narrator is unreliable and unlikable, almost cringey! The plot twist at the end was unexpected but then again Freida never fails to amaze me.

This book was okay, I’ve read a bunch of her books so far and am making my way through her catalog and this one was just meh for me. I felt like the middle of the book was just going in circles repeating a lot and the “shock” we all love at the end of her books wasn’t really shocking enough for me. Idk. It was still a decent read but definitely not my fav read from her.

This is my 8th Freida thriller and I love them all!
One By One is a fastpaced story. Six friends went on a holiday together. It started out bad as Claire was not getting on well with her husband and it got worse and worse as something horrible happened to them , one by one after they got lost in the woods.
I enjoyed the story very much. There were unexpected twists as in all Freida stories but this one also had a lot of actions and happenings in it which is not surprising as we have a group of six and the title is One By One. I give it five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars!

This was my first Freida McFadden book. It won't be my last!
My wife is a Freida Fan and that prompted me to request the pre-publication copy from NetGalley. Ms. McFadden has excellent character development and more twists and turns than a speeding rollercoaster. There is lots of action in "One by One". Some of it you can see coming and other events are head fakes that catch the reader off guard.
The big reveal took me by surprise. If you want suspense and intrigue, read this book!

Thanks NetGalley for the book.
I have read quite a few books from Freida McFadden but this was one was not my favorite. It was a very quick read, it’s interesting and will keep you guessing until the end of the book. I just felt like it was all just a little unbelievable. The ending felt rushed to me.

I’m a little confused as this was given to me as an ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review…. But it was published years ago.
Aaaaaanyway. This one was interesting! I enjoy McFadden‘s books a lot, but the housemaid series is my favorite. When I started reading this, I was picking up Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None vibes heavily. The plot is similar, but it definitely isn’t the same. I really wondered if this was going to take a paranormal turn! I truthfully didn’t see the twist coming at all. Once we figured out who Anonymous was, I was surprised. All in all, I enjoyed this for a shorter story. 4⭐️

Thank you Netgalley, for the ARC.
I can say i only liked this book .An easy read. I felt there was some details that could of been explained more, such as the disappearences of certain characters. The ending felt rushed to me as well. . Not my favorite book by this author.
2.75 out of 5 ⭐️

I've read a lot of Frieda McFadden books in the last couple days and I have to say this one is one of my favorites. It had me guessing the whole book. And every time I thought I got the ending figured out something would happen and I would be wrong! I really loved how it was so different compared to some of her other books. Overall a very fun fast read.
Thank you netgalley and poisoned pen press for the ARC!

I really enjoyed this one in the beginning. But unfortunately the way that everything resolved at the end seemed unbelievable.

Wowza, such a great story with twists that keep you guessing until the end.
When a group 6 friends, 3 couples, go to an out of the way inn, things turn from bad to worse when their car breaks down on the road to the inn. With limited food and water, they are wandering the woods using a poorly printed map and a compass, and seeing animal tracks and marks everywhere. With no cell phone signal, they can’t call for help, but must instead rely on each other. The story becomes tragic when Lindsay eats some wild berries and dies from the poison. But then other tragedies occur one by one, leaving you guessing on who is doing this. Is it someone in the group? Who can you trust?. Who is the killer? Is anyone safe? The story has lots of twists and keeps you guessing til the end.
“There will be six of us. Six adults. Stuffed into a six person minivan, like sardines.”
“Our reservation is for six days”
“Six days away from civilization”
“In revelation, 666 is the number of the devil. The sixth commandment is though shall not kill. Six is not a nice number.” anonymous
As the story unfolds, you find that all the relationships are not exactly what they appear. Claire and her husband Noah are having marital problems, and both have gotten to the point where they can’t stand to be in each other’s presence, and with this getaway, maybe they can strengthen their relationship and fix what’s broken. Except there is no way that’s going to happen when Claire is sleeping with his best friend, Jack who happens to be part of the group, with his lawyer wife, Michelle. On the plus side, Claire’s best friend Lindsay is on the trip, with her hot new doctor boyfriend. But the personalities in the group creates tension as Michelle acts like she’s better than everyone, and marital problems cause constant bickering and conflict.
The book is told from two points of view, one being Claire and the other being the mysterious anonymous person.
This was one of my first reads by Freida McFadden. I love the way she weaves twist after twist. You always believe that you have the plot figured out, and then bam!!!!, you realize not only are you wrong, but you weren’t even close. Freida keeps you hanging on to her every word, afraid that you will miss something big.
One By One keeps you guessing even after the last page.
Characters are ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ crazy stars - you have a hard time liking any of them.
Drama ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Suspense ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Twists ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

this was an enjoyable thriller!!! not anything super unique but still a fun read just the same! i definitely want to read more books by this author!

4/5 ⭐️
One by one by Freida McFadden is the tale of a group of friends going on a little getaway trip but the problem is is this a trip of happiness or a trip that ends in utter disaster. Some of the people are struggling in their marriages and with hidden secrets and others are trying to have a good time or so we believe. This story is a great thriller that has some very common elements and twists but in the same token will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting answers and shocked by the end. I love Freida’s writing and to date she is one of my favorite thriller writers. I believe that this one is worth the read and will make you have questions and oh my god moments. Is it the best book by her or my favorite of her books no but it’s definitely on the list of ones I definitely recommend.

I have to stop reading Freida McFadden books, at least old ones that pop up on NetGalley masquerading as newly published. I love the Housemaid books, but everything else I've read by her ends up being a silly thriller with a juvenile writing style. That said, as ridiculous as this was, it was a super quick read that entertained me during an afternoon workout, so...could've been worse. If you are looking for a mindless thriller to keep you busy for a bit, this might fit the bill.
