I am speechless. This was the first psychological thriller I ever rated five stars, my mind has been completely blown.

The story follows Claire and her husband, who set out to go on a trip with their group of friends, an attempt to fix their long struggling marriage. Before they reach the destination, they get stuck in the woods with a broken minivan, no cell service, and the threat of a wild animal on the loose. Only one will survive.

Gripping the reader from the start, Freida McFadden has already shown us the wonders of her writing, with new twists and turns at every chapter and an earth-shattering plot twist nearing the end.

The book is mainly consisted of Claire’s point of view, and every now and then we get a chapter from an anonymous character’s perspective that elevates the emotions to an epic thrill. The eerie atmosphere only grows stronger as the reader is trying to relate it back to the action, plus tried to crack their identity.

Surviving in the wilderness is no easy task, specially when you see your friends disappearing one by one. Suspicions start taking over, which makes the pace even more frenetic. A page turner, indeed.

Reading more thrillers has been a long time resolution of mine, and this is a perfect textbook example as to why. This is my second book by Freida McFadden, after The Housemaid, but it certainly won’t be the last.

I read this book before and enjoyed it a lot. Is this a republish? It has been a while but this book was the same as the previous one!

✨Once again, Freida McFadden to the rescue to pull me out of my reading slump. This one pulled me in from the start, and I was glued to the pages until the end.
✨Filled with a cast of unlikeable, morally grey characters that are cunningly revealed in layers.
✨I loved the fast-pace and the dual points of view that kept me guessing.
✨I’m a huge fan of survival thrillers, so I really enjoyed this aspect of the story.

All in all, this was just the page-turner I needed!

This book reads like a classic horror movie plot. This book switches POV between Claire, the female main character, and an anonymous character. Three couples decide to do a week long retreat at a remote cabin. Unfortunately on the way to cabin their car break downs forcing our friends to start walking what they assume to be two miles to the cabin. Though, one by one each member of the group starts to die or go missing. Is the group being hunted? Is the hunter within the group? Who is the Anonymous point of view from?

3.75⭐️ This was not my favorite Freida book, but it did have me guessing until the very end. The book gave a creepy and atmospheric vibe and I literally kept going back and forth in my head the whole time about who was doing what. I did not suspect a thing about what happened in the end so it came as a total surprise. However, I felt that the reason for killing and being upset was a bit far fetched which is why I gave it reduced stars. Overall I still enjoyed it and it was entertaining.

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this e-copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Freida McFadden books confuse me. On the one hand, I devour them. One sitting and done. On the other hand, I finish them, and I go to write my review, and I realize I hated them. She writes a thriller that’s addicting and hard to put down, but she absolutely does not write a good book.

I feel like McFadden constantly goes for the thrill factor, the massive plot twist set to blow your mind. I’ve said it before on reviews for her books, and I’ll say it again now… the best reveal isn’t one that comes out of nowhere and shocks you, it’s one that you could have seen coming and totally missed. Her reveals rarely, if ever, have clues or nuggets that allow you to even guess the “whodunnit”. Instead, the book happens, you’re guessing based on the characters available, but the answer isn’t something you could have possibly, logically, anticipated.

The motive for this one is also nonsense. Like you crafted this crazy killer who wanted to murder their best friend and spouse, even though the killer had absolutely no stake in the outcome, it was just because the couple were “disgusting”. Instead of just, I dunno, killing them… the killer crafts this elaborate, implausible plot, murders a couple extra people in the process, and had planned that it was all just going to end with “murder suicide”. Like, you could have done that at home and not gone to all the trouble.

Anyway. 1 star. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review this ARC. Hate em, but can’t stop reading them.

Frieda McFadden is so talented when it comes to keeping the reader engaged and flipping the page. I read this book in a total of about 4 hours & I only put the book down when I had to. This book uses one of my favorite thriller tropes and I think Frieda did a pretty good job of executing it. I'm a little disappointed that I guessed the ending. She is so good at throwing in these huge plot twists that you never see coming & I was hoping to get that with this one again.

This was a gripping, pacy + captivating thriller with intriguing, suspicious characters and plenty of twists and suspense.

Thank you to Netgalley + the publisher for my ARC.

4 .5 stars. I love this author and have read almost all of her books. When new ones come out I always get them to read. This one sucked me in just like her other books. A great thriller that you can’t put down. I highly recommend this book. Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy of this book.

6 friends are on their way to a 6 day getaway when they find themselves stranded in the woods. A fun premise and a quick, twisty read. The POV switches from that of Claire, one of the 6, and anonymous. I enjoyed trying work out the later’s identity throughout the book. I didn’t like any of the characters, which is a bummer, and they felt very two dimensional (though that’s not surprising in a book of this length). Overall this was an engaging story with a surprising ending. Absolutely worth the read!

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC!

One by One is the first book I have read from Frieda McFadden and although it is not a genre of thriller that I usually read, I was intrigued by the description and was looking forward to getting my teeth into it

Survival thrillers are not usually my preference and I went into this book with an open mind. The reason I am not enamoured of survival thrillers as a whole, is that I find the tropes can be repetitive, the reader will always wonder why on earth the protagonists go deeper into the forest and in contemporary fiction, the cell service is always out. But, I was pleased to see that McFadden reshapes these tropes to build an engaging, if short novel

I enjoyed the multiple POVs between Claire and "anonymous". In all honesty, I really did not gel withe Claire and was more interested in the mental processes of anonymous, focussing on the pursuit as it were

The writing style ,pace and the suspense was well played out. One By One is a good read and I will certainly be exploring this authors work further.

Thank you to Netgalley, Poisoned Pen Press and the author Frieda McFadden for this ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

I have to start off this review by thanking NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book will be releasing on April 2, 2024 and is a general adult fiction, mystery/thriller novel by the one and only, Freida McFadden.
This book is essentially a version of every thriller movie you’ve seen where a group of people are going on a vacation to escape their miserable lives and end up getting lost in the wilderness, which is followed by them dying off as the title states, “One By One”.
With that being said, although the basis for this book isn’t what I would call original, it was fast-paced, intriguing, and it really kept me guessing all of the way through! I read this in one night because I just couldn’t put it down! Freida is so good at immediately drawing the reader into the story and has the innate ability to paint the entire story easily in your mind. This is the first Mystery/Thriller that I’ve read in a LONG time where I didn’t immediately guess the plot twist AND I wasn’t disappointed in the ending!
All in all, I’m giving this book a 4.5/5 stars! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast, easy, fun, and thrilling read!

I absolutely love all things Freida McFadden! This one had me going. Could not put this book down, finished it so fast. I needed to know how this ended and that’s what I love about her books. They suck you in and next thing you know it you’ve finished the book without putting it down 😅 I love the line she used again for this book. “Two people can’t keep a secret, unless one of them is dead” I love this line so much! It just reminds me of PLL so much. I definitely enjoyed reading this book! Kept me entertained, kept me guessing. I didn’t think it was the best friend at all playing the part of the big bad or the anonymous chapters. Would recommend if you like a good edge of your seat thriller!

Usually love Freida McFadden books Definitely not a fan of this. So much going on in such a short amount of a book. I Definitely didn't see the ending though so I will give her props for "anonymous "

This was a quick read because I didn’t put it down! I read it in a day. It was pretty suspenseful and kept you guessing. I found myself wavering on my support for the main character- Claire, but I think that’s what the author intended.

Secrets have a way of breaking people, and Claire has a big secret. She’s about to go on a weekend trip with her husband and two other couples. Once they near their destination things keep going wrong. Dead battery, bad directions, poisonous berries, and wild animal will have you wondering what’s in these woods.
A catching easy read but no real connection to any of the characters. Told through Claire’s point of view and a mystery character. So many questions about the friendships, who planned this trip and did no one look into it?

I’ve read most books by Frieda McFadden and this one was probably one of my favorites. I love how wild the plot can get and I can never predict the ending. She also writes the best unreliable narrators.

Freida does it again. This is a fantastic thriller that leaves you feeling unsettled throughout. The Queen of the twist leaves you shell shocked when you get to the end and finally figure out what happens. Like all of Freida’s books I absolutely churned through this book and couldn’t get enough.

I have read several Freida McFadden books & every single one of them is a hit! They are so addicting and I can’t put them down. So many twists throughout the whole book. So good! Now I’m scared to go on my vacation next week to the woods LOL

Another great psychological thriller from Frieda McFadden that was hard to put down. Three couples are driving to the hotel they will be staying at on vacation when there car breaks down in the woods. They decide to hike the rest of the way to the hotel when they realize they have no reception to call for help. They end up lost and one by one members of the group start to disappear. Some good twists that will keep you guessing until the end.
