This was a really gripping thriller. Easily read in one sitting and not to be quickly figured out or forgotten.
This book holds a lot of promise, but fell kind of flat for me. The plot itself is intriguing, and the beginning of the book pulled me right in. After the setup, there was a lot of irrelevant and repetitive filler that detracted from the mystery and Kiki's investigation skills left a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the small clues dropped throughout the story, but some of the red herrings were a little confusing and the final reveal felt a bit clunky and rushed. Overall, it was a fun and quick read.
Amazing work! Completely addictive. Highly recommend and will be purchasing for my libraries. Can't wait to read what comes next!
I am going to be quick here. I didn't finish this book. I am heartbroken over that fact. I am a Kate White fan. However, this is most certainly not White's best writing. I just couldn't force myself to finish this book. I couldn't stand the characters, and I really didn't care to find out what happened. I gave up around 35%, which took me DAYS to get that far.
After Kiki breaks off her engagement to Jamie, she runs into him at a party. After a seemingly pleasant encounter they part ways and a loud bang is heard outside the party. Jamie is dead-- the police say he killed himself, but could there be more to the story? I enjoyed the characters and Kiki was a likable FMC. It jumps between past and present with quick short chapters. Its fast paced with a great plot and just enough twists to keep your attention--questioning friends and trying t solve the murder...or was it suicide?
I really enjoyed this one! All of the characters were like able and relatable. I will absolutely be reading more by this author.
This book was good, It kept my attention throughout the story. I did question the best friend Sam for a while. I think it was overall a good mystery with some good characters.
I was not overly fond of Kiki.
I kept asking why does she care about Jamie since she dumped him?
I know it’s a premise of the book but I couldn’t get around it especially after she reveals who she is really attracted to.
It was an ok read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Perennial Paperbacks, Harper Paperbacks, and the author Kate White for the opportunity to read, The Last Time She Saw Him. It was a story involving a broken engagement, lies, and murder.
I was intrigued by how the story began with an unsolved past murder, but I struggled with that murder having relevance to the present day story. I thought the story about the broken engagement was well written and how it pertained to the "new" murder involving the main character's ex-fiance.
However, I did have some trouble with the jumping around of the two time periods and all of the characters involved. It could have flowed better in my opinion.
However, I have a hard time being too critical of any author, because I know it must be extremely difficult to write a book and I admire authors and their dedication to story telling. I also feel like sometimes a book might not necessarily resonate with me, but it will with someone else. With that being said, I thought this book was an interesting story and I think readers who love murder mysteries would probably enjoy it.
A fancy party in a fancy house celebrating friendship and the publishing of a new book all lead to a grand time until someone dies. What follows is the search for the why? The premise is good, but what I found lacking is the character development. I didn’t feeling invested in any of the characters- well, maybe the dog. Thanks to NetGalley for the read!
THE LAST TIME SHE SAW HIM is the story of Kiki Reed, whose ex-fiancé dies suddenly after a party they both attended. Was it suicide or murder? The police say suicide. Kiki says murder--and she sets out to prove it. Unfortunately for the reader, Kiki jumps to one faulty conclusion after the other.. OF course, because this is fiction, all the pieces come together in the end.
I wasnt really a fan of this one. It started off okay and I thought I would be able to get into it but the plot became too much! I thought the author tried to keep the story moving but it was drug out too much. There were also a lot of characters and I had a hard time keeping with everyone.
There were so many characters, some not even worth getting into, but the ending did tie everything together neatly. I think this author writes beautifully, but this plot bored me, and there were too many extraneous people and situations. I think this may be it for me and this author, through no fault of their own - it’s just not for me.
I love this author. I love the way she sets up this meeting with Jamie at the party. I felt the tension in the room when she said hello to him.
I also felt the fear when they heard the bangs and I felt a sadness when she was in the apartment. This was amazing writing.
The Last Time She Saw Him by @KateWhite_Author is a gripping, fast-paced, murder mystery that I couldn't wait to pick back up again. It usually takes me about five days to finish a book, and this one was done in three.
Kiki recently called off her engagement to Jamie, and their mutual friends Ava and Vic are throwing a party that they're both attending. It will be the first time they've seen each other since the break-up, but they're going to run into each other eventually. Their interaction goes as good as can be expected, and Jamie seems to be dealing with everything okay. After a brief chat at the end of the night, Jamie heads to his car. Shortly after, a gunshot rings out in the vicinity and Vic and Dan run out to see what's happened. Jamie is found in his car, shot and dead. The police think it's a suicide, but Kiki doesn't believe it. Now, Kiki is determined to find out what really happened to Jamie, and she wonders what he was going to say to her the last time she saw him.
Kiki rents a house near where Jamie's death happened and starts looking into who could have had something against him. Could it be his date, who he seems to be ignoring? Or was it a random person trying to rob him? Someone with some kind of grudge against him? As far as Kiki and Sam, Jamie's best friend, know, he doesn't have any enemies but he was concerned about something recently. Now it's up to Kiki to find out because the police don't seem to be looking into it.
This pulled me in from the beginning, getting right into the main mystery. The story is quickly paced, moving along with no slow spots. Kiki is a fully developed, relatable character, just trying to get answers because otherwise it means that Jamie killed himself because of her. Kiki's relationships with the other characters are diverse, from being a close friend to an acquaintance, but they all make sense and no one is an unnecessary character. There were red herrings and you'll think it's figured out, but then the twists begin.
All in all, this is a suspenseful murder mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat. A puzzling murder with relationship and family drama. I highly recommend if you enjoy a fast-paced whodunit.
Thank you to @HarperPerennial and @NetGalley for a digital copy for review consideration. All opinions are honest and my own.
This one held my attention pretty decent. I would’ve given it a higher rating but it left me wanting more! I really enjoyed the story line and it kept me wanting to keep reading. I guess I would’ve liked to know more about the characters at the end. I’m trying to not say to much as to not spoil anything. The ending was just ok.
I’m wondering if there will be another one as a sequel but maybe not. I would love to see what happens in the main characters life!
Overall I enjoyed the book, it was a page turner as I was wanting to see what was going on and who did what! It was almost like reading a game of clue.
This was a bit of a letdown. It was too slow and seemed a bit unrealistic.
Thank you to NetGalley for this copy.
This is my third book review for this author, and I hesitated going into this one because I gave the other two books 2.5 and 3.5 stars. I decided to give it one more try, but I just don’t think this author is for me.
Kiki is our main character, and she recently broke off her engagement with a man named Jamie. Her friend Ava is having a party, and really wants Kiki to be there - despite the fact Jamie was also invited. They had a couple of brief interactions, but they were cordial, and he even had a date with him. Everything seemed fine.
At the end of the evening, he tells Kiki his date left early, says goodnight and to take care, then got in his car and shot himself in the head. Or did he? The police definitely think so, her friend Megan does too, but Kiki can’t believe Jamie would do something like that.
Then this gets really convoluted with a ton of characters and a side story about a woman killed in the area four years prior. Jamie’s brother Sam says Jamie did have other problems that may have driven him to suicide, but then a woman shows up with a dog Jamie adopted right before the party. Why would he adopt a dog, then kill himself? Is Kiki crazy for thinking this is all impossible?
There were so many characters, some not even worth getting into, but the ending did tie everything together neatly. I think this author writes beautifully, but this plot bored me, and there were too many extraneous people and situations. I think this may be it for me and this author, through no fault of their own - it’s just not for me. Three stars.
(Thank you to Harper Paperbacks, Kate White and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)

As she investigates Jamie's past and the events leading up to his death, Kiki discovers unsettling secrets that suggest foul play. With danger lurking and her own life at risk, Kiki navigates a suspenseful journey filled with twists and turns, unraveling a sinister truth that challenges everything she thought she knew about Jamie and herself.

RED HERRING ALERT. Left right and center. Red herrings everywhere😂
In detective stories, a red herring is a misleading clue that directs the sleuth away from the true villain and oh boy this book has loads of them haha I didn’t know what the heck was happening the whole time so bravo Kate!!
Thank you very much to @harpercollins @harperperennial for sending me this copy! This novel came out 5/14/2024 so is for sure going to be a summertime, slow burn paced mystery to add to your tbr if you enjoy these types of twisty novels that take you on a journey 😂💀☕️
