Kiki goes to a party at Ava and Victor’s home to celebrate Victor’s newest book. Kiki is looking forward to seeing Ava, but not to seeing Jamie – her former fiancé that she broke up with.
Much to Kiki’s relief she and Jamie have a pleasant conversation right before he leaves the party. But, then gunshots are heard and Jamie is dead. The police and Jamie’s family are convinced that it’s suicide. But, Kiki knows that Jamie would never take his own life. And she is determined to prove it. The only person on her side? Sam – Jamie’s BFF and the reason she broke up with Jamie.
Ah, this was so good. The pace, the twists, the characters – this book has it all.
RECOMMEND – I really enjoyed this one.

I couldn’t wait for this book to finish, which is sad because it started so strong! Honestly, I’ve realized I’m not a big fan of “mystery” party storylines like this one. Where there’s a group of people at a house for an evening or weekend and then something catastrophic happens and then you have to figure out who did it. I’m just so over this storyline and it’s just so boring to me, and way too over done!
On top of the main storyline, there were soooo many pointless long descriptions of scenery, what people were wearing or eating, time of day and the weather. Also, the main character constantly thinking her ex killed himself because of her after he told her he had moved on and was fine was so ridiculous and annoying, like get over yourself and stop making his death all about you!!!!!
This story was a little all over the place, and it was a little confusing trying to remember who was who, so many names and so many people were related it was hard to remember how they were related. I’m so glad I’m done with this book and I’ll never have to go through that story ever again. So not worth it.
Kiki Reed has just broken off her engagement to Jaime Larsson. He was a great guy, but Kiki felt like he was not the one for her. When they went their separate ways, Kiki knew she would run into Jaime at parties and get together. When Kiki got an invite to a friend’s party, she know that Jaime be there as well.
When people were leaving, they heard a gunshot. The friends run outside to see if everyone is ok, and they find Jaime in his car, dead from a gunshot. When the authorities think that this is a case of suicide, Kiki knows they are wrong. She is determined to find out what happened to Jaime and bring that person responsible to justice.
For me, this was a difficult book to finish. I found Kiki to be spacey, and similar to a dog chancing his tail. I needed one of her friends to just tell her, “Girl, Stop and think it through!” I felt like the story was going around and around. I also felt like she jumped to wild conclusions every time she uncovered a new piece of information. There were some points that I did enjoy, like not knowing who “did it” and so stuck with it. The premise of a women attempting to solve the mysterious death of her ex-fiancé fell very flat.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Harper Perennial for providing me an early copy to read in exchange for my honest review.
Katherine "Kiki" Reed decides to attend a party held by a friend of hers in Connecticut. It's not just any party, it will be the first time that she is in the same room as her ex, the man she broke up with right before their wedding. When she sees Jamie, all seems well but she overhears him saying very negative things about her. Kiki doesn't know what to think and she tries to speak to him once more before he leaves. This turns out to be the last time anyone see Jamie alive.
Who killed Jamie? Was it a suicide? Join Kiki as she tries to get to the bottom of the story. It's a fun twisty thriller with a bit too much about clothing. There were a lot of great details and scenes that interested me, but I think the tension could have been greater with some of the extra details. But it certainly kept my interest and I did not guess the ending!
This book was a really wild ride of twists and turns . This story really had me trying to figure out who was the killer the entire time and every time I thought I had figured out who the killer was the author planted the idea that another character could be the murderer. I really enjoy stories that don't make it obvious who is the person committing the crime etc. The main characters I thought were fleshed out ok but there were a few characters that I wish would've been explored a bit more. Overall This was a good story and I would recommend
There were parts of this that were captivating and there were parts that kind of slowed down or were distracting. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and it seemed like this poor girl was the only one really trying to find justice for Jamie.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author & Harper Perennial for the DRC in exchange for my honest review.
I read this book in about TWO days!!!! I couldn’t put it down, the story pulled me in right away and just had to know what was going to happen next! Do yourself a favor and read this book right now!!!! You will not be disappointed!
As soon as I thought that I had it figured out something new was introduced and kept you wondering was it a suicide or was it murder! Kate White’s writing is incredible and I am so excited to read other books by this author because this one was AMAZING and everyone needs to read it!
Thank you NetGalley, Harper Perennial and HarperCollins for this ARC and for allowing me to review this fantastic book!
I was really excited to read this book but it just missed the mark for me.The prologues was amazing but after that it was just so slow. When I am reading a thriller I love a page turner, fast paced, lots of drama and this one fell flat. I had to push myself to finish it.
So much potential with the whole was it murder or was it suicide plot. I will definitely give this author another try.
Sadly, I found this read to be slightly flat and predictable. I do enjoy Kate White's writing, however, and will definitely pick up her next work.
Wow this was a magnificent book. Loved it.
This book has got to be one of your bestest!!! Twists and turns throughout this book.
You had me there for awhile. But what a surprise.
Great book! Loved it Read it in one day!!!
Kate White's "The Last Time She Saw Him" is a gripping and exhilarating ride through the tangled webs of love, loss, and betrayal. From the moment I started reading, I was hooked, unable to tear myself away from the intense unraveling of Kiki Reed's world.
White expertly crafts a story that is equal parts heart-pounding thriller and intricate mystery. As Kiki grapples with the sudden and shocking death of her ex-fiancé Jamie, the tension builds with each page, keeping me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the very end.
Kiki's determination to uncover the truth propels the narrative forward, leading her down a dangerous path filled with twists, turns, and unexpected revelations. White's skillful writing draws readers into Kiki's world, making us feel every moment of her fear, confusion, and desperation.
"The Last Time She Saw Him" is a masterclass in suspense, with its seamless blend of intrigue, romance, and betrayal. With its unforgettable characters, heart-stopping suspense, and shocking twists, "The Last Time She Saw Him" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. Kate White has once again delivered a five-star masterpiece that will stay with me long after I've turned the last page.
"The Last Time She Saw Him" is a gripping tale of love, loss, and redemption that will leave readers breathless. From the very first page, author Kate White masterfully weaves a narrative that pulls at the heartstrings and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
The story follows Kiki Reed as she navigates the complexities of life and love. Haunted by the memory of her lost love, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery that takes her to unexpected places and forces her to confront long-buried secrets.
The author's prose is both lyrical and evocative, painting vivid pictures of the characters and the world they inhabit. Each character is expertly drawn, with their own unique quirks and flaws that make them feel like real people. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn deeper into the lives of these characters, rooting for them, crying with them, and ultimately cheering them on as they strive to find happiness in the face of adversity.
But what truly sets "The Last Time She Saw Him" apart is its emotional depth. The novel explores themes of love, grief, forgiveness, and the power of second chances with a sensitivity and honesty that is truly moving. As Kiki grapples with her past and confronts her demons, readers will find themselves reflecting on their own lives and relationships, and perhaps even finding a bit of healing themselves.
In the end, "The Last Time She Saw Him" is a beautifully written and deeply affecting novel that will stay with readers long after they turn the final page. It is a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength of the human spirit, and a reminder that no matter how dark the night may seem, there is always hope on the horizon.
Actual rating: somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars.
I’ve read most of Kate White’s recent thrillers, and they all usually fall into the same kind of vibe for me in that they start of strong and with a good premise, but something about the execution of it usually leaves me wanting something more. I will say, this one was more of a page-turner than some of her others for me and read really quick.
The mystery involved in this book did keep my guessing throughout the book. It held my interest as I tried to figure out where it was going to go. There was a lot of misdirection and gaslighting to make me second guess theories I was coming up with. Not one character, aside from Kiki, seemed to be on the up-and-up. Which I think also led to some of my ultimate issues with the way it all played out. By the end, I didn’t feel like I was sold on the answers because the answers didn’t feel solid. It felt like Kiki came up with an answer and we were just told it was correct, we never saw it actually get a full reveal. Even now as I sit here writing my review, I’m still wondering if it was actually someone else. I also wonder if there were more people involved and/or who knew the answers. Something about it just didn’t feel fully resolved for me.

The story follows Kikki who attends a party where her ex fiance is at and later that evening he is found dead. Kikki cannot fathom the idea that her ex fiance Jamie could have committed suicide so she starts an investigation. As the investigation goes on tungsten just aren't adding up. I felt like the book was ok. Had a hard time staying invested in the story.
3.5 stars // this book grabbed me from the first page and I kept trying to figure out “who killed Jamie?” Kiki does not believe that Jamie could have died by suicide knowing he had lots of plans and trips coming up. He was even about to adopt a dog! But since she broke off their engagement, their circle of friends didn’t seem to take her suspicions seriously. There were a few times when I kept thinking I knew who the murderer was but quickly would doubt that theory as the story progressed. I did find Kiki slightly annoying at times and there were times when parts of the story didn’t seem to make sense on why it was a topic in the story such as Kiki having been assaulted at a previous job. I also suspected Sam (one of Jamie’s close friends) because he seemed to always have theories for Kiki and it made me think he was trying to focus her attention somewhere else. I also felt the ending kind of wrapped up quickly regarding WHO and WHY they killed Jamie AND a past local girl who was murdered at a fair.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for the opportunity to read and review!
This book just didn’t hold my attention like most thrillers do. I found myself skimming the chapters and wanting to get through it. It was a good plot, but just was not for me.
Kate White has been one of my go-to authors since she left Cosmo - all of reads are satisfying thrillers with plot twists that just keep coming.
Kate White is one of my favorite authors, "The last time she saw him" will definitely need to be put on your bucket list of books to read very soon. Every character is described so vividly, and the plot will keep you guessing until the very end. This book was very hard to put down.
I found this to be a relatively boring whodunit. 40% of the book could’ve been omitted and not affect the plot at all. I liked it at first, but it just dragged. Thank you NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for the advanced copy. Publication date May 14, 2024.
The plot was slightly confusing. Important Characters seemed to appear out of nowhere. I enjoyed it, but it isn’t a favorite.
