Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. Kiki Reed attended a book party for a friend's husband when she runs into her ex-fiancé, Jamie. They didn't end on good terms and this is not a pleasant encounter. Jamie leaves the party to be later found shot in his car. They rule is a suicide... but is it?! I just couldn't connect to Kiki's character and found it a little blah.
Did I cause Jamie's death?
Was he that distraught after we broke up that he killed himself after seeing me at the party?
He didn't seem upset, and we had a brief, cordial chat.
A few minutes after Jamie left the party, a gunshot is heard, and then a blaring horn.
What could that be? What Kiki and her friends find is Jamie in his car and shot in the head.
Kiki of course blames herself but doesn't agree that it was a suicide.
She takes on an investigation of her own where she finds odd things happening and finds out things that the police won't believe when she tells them.
THE LAST TIME SHE SAW HIM was told by Kiki and was a bit slow, but a good mystery with a few surprises. 4/5
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the single POV (almost) with minor flashbacks (almost none) which made for a smooth ride. Sometimes multiple POVs and flashbacks are wonderful, but my fave type of story has a single perspective and I travel alongside that person and experience things as they do, unravelling things at the same time (often ahead of them - haha).
This was a NetGalley ARC and I chose it because I love Kate White's books.
I hate spoilers so all I will say is that the protagonist is experiencing many layers of events, dealing with friendships, romance, career, murder. How do they coincide, connect, etc? Very suspenseful.
The ending was a bit anti-climatic and abrupt. But I still liked it. I kept wanting to read it in every spare moment.
I feel like this book had a lot of potential, but it did not hit home for me. The plot was entertaining but it felt like it was a bit all over the place at times. The main character felt relatable for the first few chapters, but her impulsivity and consistent tendency to jump to conclusions made it hard for me to be in her corner. I'm glad that the book was able to wrap up loose ends in the final chapters while still leaving a door open for a sequel, but I don't know that I would read the next. I did enjoy the overall writing style of the author and would be open to reading a different one of her books!
I normally love Kate White books but this one seemed to drag a bit. It was slow and I didn’t find myself invested in figuring out the whodunnit. I appreciate the opportunity for an ARC and will be purchasing this title for our library when it comes out
I am a fan of Kate White books but this one fell flat for me. I am 52% in and don't even care if I find out who committed the murder. I, like other reviewers, think this one just drags, basically from page 1 and I also caught the Liam/Eric mistake near the middle of the book. THank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC, but I am moving on to something else.
I’m not sure about this one. I usually love Kate White books but this one seemed to drag a bit for me. It was a bit slow and I didn’t find myself invested in figuring out who did it and why.
I have read all of this author’s books and you can always count on her for a solid, twisty mystery with some pulse pounding!
This is about a woman whose ex-boyfriend kills himself at a party they both attend. The problem is, she refuses to believe it was suicide. She begins digging into his recent past and before long, strange things begin happening.
Perfect for reading by the pool!
"The Last Time She Saw Him" fell short for me. I felt the main character unbearable. The first 20% was promising, the last 80% dragged and everything felt forced. I felt myself wanting to DNF the book, but continued and finished it anyway. I got confused with Liam/Eric? Why did he have two names? Thriller? I wouldn't say so. Suspense? Maybe. There was a sprinkle of romance towards the end, but again it felt forced, like the author just needed to add more to the novel.
It honestly wasn't the worst book I've read but it could've been better. It unfortunately didn't leave a lasting impression.
This was a very fast and catchy read. The action starts right away. After the beginning action, it started getting to be too much in the middle. There was just too much added to it. The romance didn't fit and would have preferred to just stick with the straight mystery.
This book had my heart POUNDING the entire time! It kept my attention the entire time with the wonderful writing and thrilling plot.
Not the best mystery I’ve ever read, but it wasn’t bad! I saw the ending coming and figured out the plot twist so I didn’t love it.
Kiki heads to a party knowing it will be awkward seeing her ex, Jamie. What she didn't expect was to be one of the last people to see him alive.
This thriller had a lot of promise for me but I was really middle ground with it. The beginning really pulled me in. I was intrigued by Kiki and Jamie. I wanted to know what happened to them to get them to the point where they were so awkward with each other. I then felt so bad for Kiki when Jamie dies. She was really trying to move on but the was quickly sidetracked by his death.
I liked the romance aspect to the this. I wanted a little more from it, but I was happy with it.
Now, on the other end, I felt that there were too many characters. I got a little lost in all of the backstories and who was who, which is not something that usually happens to me. I also got annoyed with Kiki at times. Overall, I did like her, but some of her actions didn't make sense to me.
All in all, an interesting thriller.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the gifted copy.
I do enjoy a Kate White thriller and this one had me glued to the pages. It was a fast read, full of interesting characters and plenty of twists that I didn’t see coming, and some that I did.
The premise, suicide or murder? I really enjoyed how it played out, the strange things happening to Kiki, her reasons for believing it was murder mad sense to me. And a do, a rescue do at that is always going to get my heart. The ending was very clever, and I certainly did not see it coming. I had a few different scenarios in my head that were not even close 😅
Overall, it was a fun and easy read. Alway look forward to reading her books.
Thanks so much to Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for my advanced copy on NetGalley. Publishes on May 14th.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for the copy of The Last Time She Saw Him by Kate White. Kiki was self-absorbed. So many times she made everything all about herself. She spent so much time thinking she was the reason Jamie killed himself it got monotonous, and when she finally figured out it wasn’t her fault I was sick of her. While the writing style was good, the story went off in too many directions that didn’t matter and felt like filler. I was interested in how it would all come together, but ultimately the end was disappointing.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Last time She Saw Him.
I don’t think this is a thriller or mystery. This is more of a suspense novel with romance tossed in
I did not finish this book but thank you for the advance copy
I love Kate White’s books. Really I do. But the last few that I’ve read have left me wanting more, and not in a good way. The Last Time She Saw Him is no exception. It started off strong and I was very invested. Just when I was about halfway through the book, the pace started slowing down significantly. There were a few things alluded to in the story that were never brought up again, even though it was hinted that they would be. The big “twist” seemed very forced and the ending was sloppy and thrown together. It wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read, but it was a little disappointing.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I want to express my gratitude to NetGalley, Harper Perennial, and Paperbacks for giving me the chance to read this ARC.
I'm usually a huge fan of Kate White books, but this one felt forced and predictable to me. There weren't many surprising twists, and the dialogue felt unnatural. Despite my criticisms, I found the story easy to follow. I have to be honest, I couldn't stand the main character. I couldn't connect with her and she really bothered me. However, that didn't stop me from completing the story.
In my opinion, the romance aspect felt a bit forced, but I understand its role in the overall plot.
I'm excited to see what the author has in store for us next!
Did you read that book?
The Last Time She Saw Him
By Kate White
Plot: Kiki’s ex-boyfriend commits suicide…or was it murder? Determined to find the truth, she rents a house in the area to look for the missing link that will get the police to take her seriously. But as she peels away the layers, she uncovers something far more sinister than she had ever imagined—and it may be her life on the line next. . . .
Review: Let me start by saying I actually enjoyed the writing (it was very well written) and the premise from chapter one did have me wanting to keep reading more. I was “hooked” until I saw I had maybe 40 pages left and thoughts…how will all this be wrapped up so quickly? I kept waiting for something thrilling to happen, and it had so much potential, but it did not come. The cold bedroom scene had me very invested but the outcome/answer was just okay. The reveals along the way were full of promise but underwhelming, and when the final twist was revealed, I just said “okay”.
Thank you to Kate White, NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for an ARC copy of The Last Time She Saw Him.
This book was a slower burn but so good!
There were little twist at the end of the chapter making me want to keep reading to see what happened next. I enjoyed this book and loved that it did disclose what happened at the end of the book.
Thank you NetGalley, Kate White, and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks Publishing for the ARC!
