This Latina Gothic story will haunt you long after you finish the novel.
Samara has uprooted herself to California to work for a legendary designer with a legendary temper. The stress of working for the aging desinger causes Samara to drink to excess. Maybe that is why she hears voices every night or sees strange things in the office. Why don't the seamstresses like her? Why is she hearing the whispers and seeing the dark figures. Things come to a head when the big fashion show approaches and Samara needs to make a stand.
I loved this gothic story. It seeped into my bones and I am still thinking about it many days later. If you are looking for a scary tale, a fashion story or a latina flawed heroine, this is the story for you!

Supernatural thrillers aren’t always my favorite genre but this was enjoyable for the most part although I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
3.5/5 Tiny Threads
Samara is living her dream. She's accepted a job with the infamous designer Antonio Mota, been given a fancy new apartment, and is surrounded by high class clothes and people. But there's a darker side to the city of Vernon and the people who reside in it. A slaughterhouse "perfume" coats the streets, pigs squeals in the night, and Samara is having visions of a blood soaked woman.
Are these visions simply the affect of her heavy drinking mixed with the caffeine pills and drugs she's using to keep up with the high stress fashion work environment or is she truly being haunted by the ghosts of Vernon's past.
The Devil Wears Prada meets Last Night In Soho, wrapped in psychological horror - Tiny Threads shows how systemic racism and classism can be just as terrifying, if not more so, than being haunted by literal ghosts.
It took me a good eighty pages to get into the swing of this novel. The focus of the first half of the book is primarily character development and background of Samara. There are snippets of horror elements until the halfway point, when Samara begins to spiral, then more direct hauntings come into the story after that.
Samara was a difficult character to connect to for me mostly because she needed everyone to like her, she wanted to be the center of attention receiving "gold stars" with every complement, and that's my least favorite type of person. I understand that is a part of fashion industry culture and key to the novel but her anxiety about being liked didn't endear me to her until the very end.
Overall, Tiny Threads was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to those who enjoy psychological horror.
Thank you Netgalley for the arc of this upcoming release!
I am settling on a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars here. This thriller follows the story of Samara and her new job. It is her dream job in fact, and it is a tale of her ultimate undoing. I don’t love supernatural thrillers and this was one, it could’ve been a bit scarier to really grab me.
I am giving this book 4 stars out of 5. I enjoyed it and feel it brought a unique perspective and spin to the supernatural thriller/horror genre. I did not give it a full 5/5 rating because I felt like the end was a bit messy and abrupt. I want to know more of what happened!! More revenge! More closure! I additionally had some trouble empathizing with Samara and found her character a bit off-putting and obtuse, but this may have been intentional on the author's part. Additionally, the themes of exploitation, systemic discrimination, and abuse of power are so important and vital to a story of the fashion industry, but I felt they were minimized a bit in the way that they were involved in a supernatural novel of this type. Maybe addressing the themes in more depth or more adeptly displaying the parallels between these themes and those of a supernatural horror story could have leant strength and resonance to such poignant topics. Overall, I feel my thirst for more and frustrations with the protagonist just indicate how much this book captured my attention and how entranced I became in its characters. I am excited for Rivera's novel to debut this September. Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for this ARC!
A supernatural thriller! These are always hit or miss for me. For the most part, I felt like this was a hit. It was on the shorter side so I would consider this more of a novella than a novel. I felt like parts of it could’ve been more flushed out and lengthier but it was entertaining.
A supernatural thriller about a woman, Samara, who just got her dream job in the fashion industry. As the fashion show draws closer, Samara starts hearing and seeing things that keep her up through the night and makes her work life unmanageable. Is it simply stress, anxiety, or is there something sinister going on that Samara is close to uncovering?
While this book is a bit of a roller coaster, I wish it had gone a bit deeper instead of just going through Samara's day to day unraveling. The chapters were short and I think a lot could have been cut out while other things could have been explored further.

Samara finally has the job of her dreams, working alongside a famous fashion designer. Without hesitation Samara jumps at the chance to leave her home in Jersey behind for new exciting adventures in California. Samara is immediately thrown into chaos at her new position, with a large fashion show to prep and plan for looming on the horizon. As the stress of work begins to build haunting voices and strange sounds begin to be heard in the night. To cope Samara turns to self medicating with alcohol and pills but to her dismay the sounds are soon then accompanied by disturbing visions. Could this just be explained away as anxieties of a new environment or is it something more, something supernatural.
Tiny Threads is a supernatural suspense thriller that touches on the darker side of the fashion world. Reading this book was like a fever dream, you spend much of your time questioning if Samara is going into full blown Psychosis or if the gruesome visions are real. As far as pacing I felt like some of the chapters end rather abruptly making it feel choppy. I do think that some of that is due to the books shorter length and I personally would call this more a novella. The plot did keep me turning pages though and I was able to finish this read very quickly. So many of the plots points feature relevant and dark realities of factory work and showcase people in positions of power use of abuse in order to achieve compliance. It made for an intriguing juxtaposition to have this world alongside supernatural horrors. However I do feel that these points would be more impactful if greater detail had gone into featuring them, for instance I wanted to see more of the toxic underbelly of this fashion world. Again I feel the length of the book makes this harder to accomplish. There are also trigger warnings that that I feel readers would benefit from knowing ahead of time such as violence, blood, gore, s.a, r**pe, drug use, and excessive alcohol use.
Tiny Threads comes out August 27, 2024.
