Nick is the local star of karaoke at his local bar. On top of that, he's charming and witty and hoping this all takes away from his cerebal palsey. When he sees Hayley dancing, he can't take his eyes on her but with one comment about just trying to dance. Hayley is horrified to find out that Nick can't because of his CP.

As their paths begin to cross, Hayley and Nick begin a friendship which is fine because Hayley's already got a boyfriend. But as their time is longer spent together, Hayley must also come to the conclusion that she feels more than friendship with Nick and they must find a rhythm to work together.

This was a really refreshing book to read! I enjoyed the CP representation and think the author did a great job with Nick as the lead. I think it was also a smart decision to make this a dual POV because it really made Nick and Hayley more clear in their actions and feelings. I also just love a dual POV though.

All the tropes worked in this novel but do think it was a slow start. It was a fun read overall but I think that the first half was slow and not my favorite. I think if I were reading this as an ebook or physical book, I would've shelved it a quarter of the way through. It did eventually get interesting but the pacing wasn't my favorite.

A great debut though! 3.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.

Cute read that started out strong. The middle felt a little slow but still enjoyable, and I liked the main characters. The narrator did a good job.

A feel good romance about two main characters you absolutely fall in love with. I felt that the conflict was forced but otherwise I enjoyed this novel.

Loved it! Perfect rom-com style romance with representarion. It was cute and fun, a great friends to lovers but with more depth. The characters were great and had amazing chemistry and really helped each other grow.

The audio was perfect!

I thought this one started off strong. Great writing. Lovely characters. Awesome new and interesting love story. About halfway through I got a little bored and found it a little repetitive. I felt like scenerios, emotions, dialect, reactions, were all just repeating themselves and that sweet dynamic between characters Nick and Hayley fell a little flat. Still liked them individually, just their love story started to fall a little flat. Regardless, well written and a good read. Also enjoyed the narrating :)

I was really excited for this one. Seemed like something different and exciting. Unfortunately, this was boring and took me a while to get though. I had to come back to it several times as it didn’t grip me. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

rep: cerebral palsy
This one was a super cute #ownvoice debut featuring a MMC with cerebral palsy and his journey to self love and maybe finding romantic love along the way.
Nick Freeman is a talented singer, movie buff and math teacher who has CP and uses a walker to get around. He’s a local, everyone knows him and he makes a point to know everyone. While he is kind he’s also a bit of a grump. Haley Burke is a dedicated and gifted dancer who recently moved into town with her boyfriend in the midst of a complicated relationship between them and their dual love for dance. Haley and Nick befriend each other pretty quickly, after a little resistances from Nick, and we watch them navigate their new friendship, while both trying to learn to love and put themselves first.
I really thought this book was super cute! I listened to the audiobook and while I did enjoy the narrator I do kind’ve wish Haley was done by a female narrator. I just feel like there’s was a few parts that would’ve been more clear if there was two narrators- but that’s just something I’m a fan of in general! I did enjoy these characters, while I found it a bit hard to connect with them past surface level. I didn’t love the aspect of Haley’s boyfriend and that he was present but not in the story. I don’t know I just didn’t love the love triangle kind’ve vibe.
Overall, I thought this was a cute read and a really good debut! I love reading books with disability representation and I thought this #ownvoice debut was a great one to add to my list!

“I think we could be good for each other. Wanna see if I’m right?”

“Spending time with you is a gift I don’t deserve.”

*Thank you NetGalley and author for a audiobook copy of this book! All opinions above are 100% my own!*

What a beautiful story! This book follows Nick, a seemingly cocky karaoke singing computer wiz, with cerebral palsy. He meets a dancer Hayley who throws him off his game to say the least.

Now hear me out, I am not one to gravitate towards a book with a male main character. Dual POV yes but a story, a romance especially, told from the male POV? Not my normal cup of tea. But this book seemed interesting to me. I love a romance with a little more to the characters, whether that's representation that I don't normally see, mental health awareness so I picked this up and I am glad I did. This book had many great romantic moments and tropes that I love while also having a little more depth to the characters and story. Navigating self worth and romance while finding out their identities is charming and refreshing.

The romance between Hayley and Nick is a slow burn that keeps you on your toes. They bring out the best in each other while being opposites on the surface. This book shows a deeper side to our ladies man character who jut can't seem to say the right thing to our fiery female main character.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a romance with strong emotions. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story!

How to Dance by Jason B. Dutton was a good #ownvoice novel for the main character, Nick, who has cerebral palsy. I really wanted to get into this romance to have more inclusive examples in the genre, but the female main character bugged me too much. I really liked Nick.

Thank you, Dreamscape Media, for this ALC.

I was curious about how the author would set up the opposition between dancing and being impaired. Mostly, he did not disappoint. On the paper, Haley and Nick could not be more different. He is an english teacher, affected by cerebral palsy, while she is a passionate dancer, in a relationship with another one. Throughout the book, we notice they are actually way more alike than one could think. They are both crippled by their own uncertainties, doubting their abilities and projecting their fears onto what others might think of them.

They had a good chemistry and that was likeable about them. I really liked the scenes with Rosie the most, they made me smile so much. My preferred characters were by far the Beckett's, for their deep and loving understanding of what it means to be a couple, to decide to be there for one another and to keep going when it gets hard.

I found Nick more relatable than Haley and his reaction made more sense to me. Surely, he was very defensive for a good part of the book, getting back to his fears very often but that was believable. I was more annoyed at some of her reactions and lack of empathy sometimes, despite her being depicted like a genuinely generous woman.

The last hour of the audiobook maybe was not fully to my liking. Haley sorting out her relationships did not feel satisfying and actually annoyed me quite a bit, which is why I downgraded my note a little.

On another note, I loved the narrator, which had a pleasing voice and rendered the story very well.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for letting me listen to an ARC of this audiobook.

I honestly felt like I couldn’t get into this one. I really wanted to like it too because I think that more people should write about those with disabilities to make the genre more inclusive. I guess I really didn’t like that she was in a relationship and even though it ended it still rubbed me the wrong way. A lot of breakthrough from these characters though, which I did appreciate.

🌀Synopsis
Nick and Hayley meet in a very non-traditional manner. He’s paralyzed and she’s a dancer, so when he tries to get him to dance she immediately regrets her actions because she realizes he can’t. The two fall into a very unlikely friendship though and that begins to grow with time. They get to know each other and both try to pursue their dreams.
It all comes to a halt when Nick realizes he has feelings for her even though she is seeing someone else. Or, at least she was. When her boyfriend and dance partner leaves, Hayley is devastated. Thankfully Nick is there to help pick her back up and finally be more than just a friend.
