Casey and Eric are on the case of a missing 10 year old boy from their new settlement, Haven’s Rock, after reports of a “bear-man” in the forest. The case brings suspicion to several of Haven’s Rock inhabitants and to the local miners community nearby. The story is filled with twists and turns and is gripping as have the other books in this series and that of the Rockton Series before.

I have listened to every book, beginning with Rockton and now, Haven’s Rock and the Otherworld series also by this author. I enjoy her writing and character development along with intriguing stories.
Therese Plummer has narrated the Rockton and Haven’s Rock series and stays consistent and entertaining throughout. She has these characters and their personalities nailed with her narration!

A continuation of the Haven’s Rock series. Casey and Dalton are dealing with some of the same issues as before: wild animals in an untamed and dangerous environment with people who may not be completely trustworthy. There are new challenges when they allow kids in the refuge. Their miner neighbors are hiding something possibly nefarious. And a personal surprise for Casey could change her whole life.
This series never gets old. In fact, I get more and more invested in the characters and want more!

I've read the others in this series, and while it's not 100% necessary, it's nice to know the backstory. But it certainly can be enjoyed on is own. This series always provides a great mystery with bits of info sprinkled throughout the story about the wilderness, tracking, and survival. It's been fun to see the progression of the characters and this unique community and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next one!

The boy who cried bear

Didn’t love it.
Max and Carson are kids involved in the witness protection program and live in a town of only adults (weird).

One day Max sees a “bear man” and later is taken by this “bear man”. At this point started questioning if this was going to end up some weird sci-fi book, but it didn’t.

I just didn’t care for the storyline. I found it boring and lacking in depth. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and thought the side story of the pregnancy was unnecessary and didn’t add anything to the overall story. The ending was thrown in there out of nowhere and was a let down.

The narrator was excellent though and was able to really convey the emotions of the characters.

3.5 rounded up.

Premise - a boy in an isolated small town, composed entirely of people escaping their pasts, spots a bear with human eyes. Shortly afterwards, he goes missing. Now it’s up to Detective Casey Duncan and her husband to solve the case - before it’s too late.

This was an engaging mystery, great for fans of this series. The author balanced developments in the detectives personal life with the case at hand well, even if it was fairly predictable.
