This was a really good young adult contemporary romance book. This is book 2 in The Prince & The Apocalypse series, which I wish I would have realized before picking this one up. I really liked the storyline and the characters of this book and I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the previous book. Overall this was an enjoyable read.
Since I loved the first book in this duology, I knew I had to read this book, especially when the first ended on a cliff hanger that left me screaming. This novel is filled with so much heart, laughter, action-packed scenes, chemistry, royal drama, sizzling romance, banter, and characters that I adored. I will ship Theo and Wren forever and hope they can have another book with their adventures together.
Overall this was a fun read, but I did have mixed feelings. The part on the island was the most fun, though like in the first book, Wren's actions/impulsiveness added to the difficulties faced. I really enjoyed getting to know Brooke and Naomi better as well as Theo's siblings. It was the ending that I didn't enjoy as much. For one thing, I felt I had a bit of whiplash. For another thing, so much still seemed unresolved. On top of that, I can't imagine the one thing that was resolved going very smoothly. Still, anyone who enjoyed The Prince & the Apocalypse should read this if they want to know what happens with Wren and Theo.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the early read.
I read this in one sitting. It was absolutely the perfect follow-up and ending to book one. This felt like a Hallmark movie in the absolute best way. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys great characters, fun and fast plots, and a sweet, yearning romance. This kept me guessing all the way to the end, desperate for a happily ever after, but unsure how our characters would get here. Kara McDowell pulls it off without a hitch.
Cannot recommend highly enough.
3.5 stars.
I cannot say how EXCITED I was to dive back into this world. Thank you Wednesday Books for sending me this copy - it was an absolute delight to read. The royals are my guilty pleasure - sue me, I love me some reality TV and drama - which is what made me pick up this book last year, and the sequel definitely delivered.
My favorite part of the first book was the characters. Wren is me, I am Wren, and I absolutely related to her anxieties and will in the face of something so...world-ending, pun intended. I have a thing for tortured brunette men (yes, I know Theo isn't one but he is by the end of it, so it counts) and god, Theo. That man deserves the entire world. I loved that we got to see these two face a piece of the real world outside of an apocalypse in the sequel, and fell in love with the rest of the cast of characters - Brooke, the older brother we need; Victoria, the little sister every man like Theo deserves, poor Henry who deserves so goddamn much and made me smile, and of course Naomi. The extended cast didn't take away the charm of the first book but extended it, and seeing each of their personalities shine on the island was so good.
My one gripe with the book is that I think the ending was too rushes. I almost wish at least one of the plot points in the end didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I loved how everything was resolved - it was what I wanted for them and what made sense - but getting there was a bit...messy, to say the least. Still, it was a great followup and I'm so excited for it to be out in the world for others to read it as well.
I did not realize that this book was a sequel. I have not read the first one, but for the most part, you do not need to read the first one.
This charming YA romance centers around the King of England, Theo and his maybe wife, Wren. The book also includes their family and friends and an adorable dog named Comet. I loved the back and forth between the 2 love interests and even the snark between Theo's sister and Wren.
If you have read the first one, I imagine you will love this HEA sequel. If you have not read the first one, I still believe you will enjoy this book greatly.
Wren Wheeler is about to begin her freshman year of college, but first, she has to get her dog back from the King of England. When her initial scheme doesn't go as planned, she falls further into the world of the Royal Family. One thing is always sure when Wren and Theo are around each other, adventures. This time in the form of a plane crash on a deserted island. This was a perfect sequel as it brought up all the feelings of first love but also allowed us to learn more about Theo's siblings and Wren's family. This is the perfect YA novel for readers who enjoy adventure, second-chance romance, and a strong FMC.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, The Prince and The Apocalypse, and was incredibly exited to read this one. It did not disappoint!
Since the cliffhanger in the last book, I have been waiting for this to reimmerse myself with Kara McDowell's wonderfully crafted world and characters. Beginning a few months after the first book in the series ended, Theo and Wren haven't been in contact, and Wren is trying to move on as she stars school. Theo, on the other hand, has now become the King, and is passing near her. After a photograph of the two of them surfaces, the two set out on another whirlwind.
Returning to this story was so good, and I loved seeing the characters again. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a true adventure of a novel. I think it is also necessary to read the first novel in the series before this, though.
I really loved this book so much! My only wish would have been to see some more of these in another book. Kara McDowell is an author I really love and I was so grateful to read this.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The sequel that I have spent half a year waiting on!
Heir, Apparently was my most anticipated sequel for 2024 and it did not disappoint. The first in the duology was the perfect example of love at the end of the world and now, the world is no longer ending and they have to figure out what to do. McDowell wrote in a way that made me fall in love with all of the characters not just Wren and Theo, but I love Theo the most. The best thing about her writing is that she made the characters so realistic. I don't think I have seen such a realistic version of guilt and anger, especially with the bag. It gives the teenage angsty and love but also it makes it very real, as a King did give up everything for the love of an American once. I thought this was an amazing sequel and will be in my top ten books of the year!
I have been provided with a review copy of this title from NetGalley for an impartial review. This was just a great read. I just had so much fun reading this story.
I enjoyed the first book in this series and so was curious to read this one.
This book starts about three months after the first one. The world hasn't ended but Theo and Wren haven't been in contact since they were separated. Wren is trying to move on but when Theo chances to be on the same continent she can't pass up the chance to see the boy she knew so intimately during Comet Week. The boy who has now become the King.
Being Wren and Theo their reunion is fraught and sets off a course of events that swiftly spiral out of their control, as extravagant and far fetched as in book one but no less enjoyable for their implausibility. Their reunion brings them together and they find their way emotionally back to where they want to be, despite the circumstances. It's a fun and engaging read, amusing and heart felt. It's a great YA read but fun for adult readers too. I won't spoil the ending but this series is a quick and fun read. improbable as the circumstances may be.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher. This is my personal opinion.
I really liked the first book in this series, but this one felt a bit of a let-down to me. I just didn't get the same sense of excitement in this book as the previous one. I would pick up another book by Kara McDowell, but hoped for something more in this book.
Sequel to The Prince and The Apocalypse. The first book ended in a cliffhanger that makes you want to immediately pick up the next book. The people that have been waiting for this one are going to be so excited to catch up with all these characters.
The book starts off a couple months later when Wren is now starting school. Wren is trying to move on like everyone else. No one is even thinking about the fact that months ago they all thought the world was ending and then it didn’t. She’s stuck with here memories traveling arcoss europe with Prince Theo. She doesn’t know what’s next for her. Prince Theo is now the King.
Wren is scrolling through social media when she sees Theo is near her on Tour with HER dog Comet. She misses him, Comet and Theo of course. She decides to go get him. While she is there the two are seen photographed and it is leaked that the two could be legitimately married.
The Firm is who in charge of protecting the Crown decide Wren is needed in London until they are able to control the narrative. Wren and Theo know how to get one thing right and that is going through end of the world situations. The plane on the way to London crashes and they are stranded on an island. All the royals, wren, her sister Brooke and best friend Naomi are all along for the ride. They come together to finds way to survive and get help. Wren and Theo also have to work out what will happen to them once they are rescued. Is it possible? Are they doomed? Will they die on this island? Will they finally get their happily ever after?
Thank you Kara McDowell for this sequel. I fell so in love with your writing and characters. Thank you for this arc NetGalley and thank you Wednesday Books for the approval.
Rating: 4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this book! Again, it was over-the-top just like book one in this series. I highly suggest reading book one first because you will want to read how Wren and Theo's love story starts. This was a really good ending though. It's three months after book one takes place, and we get all the fun "We are about to die" situations in it. I don't want to give too much away about the plot, so I will leave it at that. But I enjoyed the writing so much and can't wait to read more by this author! I do recommend this book/series if you are a fan of over-the-top situations that bring people together.
Heir, Apparently might just be one of my top 2024 reads. I absolutely LOVED it. As soon as I had read The Prince & the Apocalypse, I couldn't wait for the sequel. As soon as I saw it available to request on Netgalley, I requested the book and kept my fingers crossed that I'd be approved.
Kara McDowell does an incredible job with this romcom sequel, balancing humor of the lovey scenes with the tension of the action scenes. She truly made a cast of characters that readers care about and feel connected to. I found myself rooting for Wren and Theo throughout the ups and downs of the book.
As I said in my review of the previous book, this duology would make a wonderful movie. I would love to see Wren and Theo's love story translated to the screen.
Kara McDowell is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors -- one where I will immediately read anything she puts out. She does a fantastic job with world building and developing realistic, complex characters.
My only complaint about the book is that it finishes a duology, instead of setting up for a trilogy.
Ahhh! I loved this sequel. I didn't even realize that I wanted a sequel until I started reading Heir, Apparently.
Kara McDowell drops us right back into the story world with this one. It's the perfect conclusion to Wren and Theo's story (or is it?? are we going to get more???) Perfect blend of humor and drama and romance.
Bravo, Kara. Bravo.
Heir, apparently

📚📚📚 This is the second book in a series but the only one I read. Works as a standalone. What if you accidentally married the King of England? As background, during a chaotic catastrophic event of a comet about to destroy the world event, Wren finds herself far away from Chicago and in London. With the prince of England, Theo. Pretending to be non-royal. After following in love, and with some twists and turns, they are forced to get married. Once the world didn’t come to an end, Wren goes back to Chicago to start her freshman year in college. And Theo left to become King. Now months later, Theo is hours away in Canada and Wren decides to steal back her dog that he’s been keeping back. A stolen dog, a photograph, a marriage certificate later, Wren is on a plane to London with a paparazzi chasing. It will be a bit of a crash landing, and her and Theo will be forced to come to terms with being royal and in love. Will the throne be a prison or a home?
This was fun and adorable. A perfect young adult book. Great read for a teen but the 40-something me loved it. Quick, fun, sweet, and a lesson that being in love doesn’t require the woman to change who she is or give up her home. A great break from reality and a fun (and improbable) read. @KaraJMcDowellBooks and @WednesdayBooks @stmartin
❤️❤️❤️JJ’s last words. Princess Diaries goes to college.
Disclaimer: St Martins publishing gave me access to this advanced readers copy on NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
The Prince and the Apocalypse was one of my favorite book releases in 2023, and I am SO excited (and grateful!) that I got to read it's sequel, Heir Apparently, early as well. I had originally assumed that book one was going to be a standalone novel, but after that ending I was really excited for book two, and it didn't disappoint!
I wasn't sure how different things were going to be from the survival aspect of TPATA, but I have to say, McDowell did an excellent job delivering an action packed sequel that's just as dramatic, romantic and ridiculous as the first (and I mean this in the best way!). I loved the additions to the cast, getting to know Naomi and Brooke better was fun and Henry and Victoria were an absolute delight in this setting. Also, Wren's motives for going to Canada are exactly what mine would have been in this situation, Comet is the BEST boy and deserves nothing but love.
I did think that the ending felt a little off kilter from the rest of the book, but I understand that things needed to get wrapped up a little more nicely than they could've been on the island setting. Don't let this stop you from enjoying it though, it certainly wasn't enough of a deterrent to convince me to stop either - I stayed up until 5am to finish! All in all, Heir Apparently was an absolute delight of a read, and I can't wait to see what McDowell writes next. Because let's be honest, I would love to see Victoria get her own book.
I was really wanting a sequel to the first novel and am really happy with this one!
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this review copy
4.5 ⭐️ - Thank you to NetGalley & St. Martin's Press for the ARC copy... especially after book 1's cliffhanger!
Much like book 1, you have to continue to suspend your disbelief, but it's so much fun that I finished it in less than 24hrs! In Heir, Apparently we continue the story of Wren & Theo and their unbelievable adventures. McDowell draws you in with her fun characters and quick moving plot. In book 2 the main character Wren seemed a little lost and changed from who she was in book 1, but considering all she's been through it does make sense. The reader is introduced to new characters & we get to spend more time with some from book 1. All of the witty dialogue & action really helped move the story along.
With all the ups & downs and twists & turns I was worried that I was going to be left with another cliffhanger or unsatisfied ending. But, luckily, that was not the case... I could see some more spin-offs from other royals coming? (Which I would totally read.) Or maybe a book-to-screen version that I wouldn't hesitate to watch. 😀
