I loved The Prince and the Apocalypse so I was VERY Excited to read book 2 in the series!
Loved Wren and Theo already and love them still! Their chemistry and banter are so fun to read!
I also loved some new characters, like King Theo's brother, Henry, and getting to know characters from the first book even better, like Naomi and Brooke!
As in the first book, a new kind of adventure and close calls await Theo and Wren around every corner!
It was exciting, suspenseful and fun all at once! Loved, loved, loved every page!
I am a huge fan of McDowell and her writing, and this novel did not disappoint. “Heir, Apparently" by Kara McDowell is a delightful romp through high-stakes romance and unexpected adventure. This is a fun read for book clubs looking for a fun adventure this summer!
Meet Wren Wheeler. She discovers she’s accidentally married to the King of England, the story takes off on a whirlwind of humour, heart, and hijinks. Freshman year is stressful enough without accidentally being married to royalty. But that's exactly what happens to her.
After surviving a narrowly-averted apocalypse over the summer, she's had enough excitement for one lifetime. Yet, she can't forget the look in Theo's eyes when he left her stranded on a Greek island: and also, he took her dog! When an ill-fated attempt to rescue Comet the Apocalypse Dog turns into a chemistry-fueled reunion with Theo, caught by the paparazzi, Wren finds herself under the royal spotlight.
Suddenly, she’s a problem for “the firm” to solve, and in order to be protected from the rabid press, she’ll have to fly back to London with Theo. Because the universe can’t let these two maybe-newlyweds have one conversation in peace, their plane goes down over the Atlantic, crashing on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere.
Stranded with no sign of rescue, the group must band together against poisonous animals, catastrophic injuries, a brotherly rivalry, and an ill-timed volcano if they’re going to make it out alive. Scariest of all, Wren and Theo will have to face their feelings for one another and decide what they want their futures to look like, and if that future will be heartbreak or happily ever after.
McDowell weaves humour, romance, and adventure into a captivating tale that keeps readers turning pages. The chemistry between Wren and Theo is electric, and the tropical island setting adds an extra layer of excitement. If you're looking for a fun, fast-paced read with unexpected twists, "Heir, Apparently" is the perfect choice. I can't wait to see what McDowell has in store for us next!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Wednesday Books for a temporary e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Overall I would say this was an enjoyable read. I didn't realize it was a sequel though so I was slightly confused in the beginning. I enjoyed the characters and their different personalities and felt like I got to know each one pretty well. It was well written, I just wish the flow of the story wasn't as fast. It felt like we were taking big leaps between the different sections. I will say it kept me interested and wondering what would happen next!
This was a fun sequel to The Prince and the Apocalypse— we revisit Wren and Theo a few months after the end of the last book. There’s mutual pining and then they all get stranded on a desert island and have to work through their ~feelings~ (not mad about it). I thought it was cute and fun and a diverting read. I agree that the ending felt rushed and I would have liked more time with that but I do understand why the author did it that way.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC!
I absolutely loved this sequel! I love sequels that take place immediately after the first novel. This romance is full of adventure and twists which adds so much more to the genre. Overall would recommend this series to lovers of adventurous romance with elements of regency.
This was a great follow up to the first book. It gave me the same butterfly feelings of excitement and I feel even more in love with the characters.
Kara McDowell has done it again! I crossed all my body parts after reading THE PRINCE AND THE APOCALYPSE, hoping and hoping that there would be a sequel. HEIR, APPARENTLY has fulfilled all my wildest dreams! No one can right the sweet and swoony quite like McDowell!
I started and finished this book in one sitting. I was left reeling after finishing book #1 and HAD to continue with Wren and Theo's story. If disaster was in a relationship, it would be Wren & Theo. They could not be at more opposites of the social spectrum, yet their story was one that I could not put down. I thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every fateful event that occured to them on the island and their subsuquent happily ever after.
Oh how I loved this book and wished it never ended! I love these characters so much because of their vulnerability and development. From the beginning I was hooked on this book and the constant plot twists made me want to never put the book down! I am sad to see that this is possibly the last book in the series because I want these comfort characters to continue in my heart, but it is nice to imagine my own ending to their story. I am so glad Brooke, Naomi, Henry, and Victoria were written more into this second book and that the reader was given more people to root for! Please do yourself a favor and read this!!!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This was another delightful installment in the series. I especially enjoyed getting to know the royal siblings.
Such a fun romantic adventure! Heir, Apparently is the follow up to The Prince and the Apocalypse and just picks right up with the fun. I really enjoyed both of these books and recommend them highly for high school students who love a good rom-com! Misunderstandings, plane crash on a tropical island, and the coronation ceremony looming over it all make for a story I just couldn't put down!
A great follow up and completion to this duology! It was so great to see Theo and Wren again and equally amazing to meet the new characters. (I’m a big Victoria fan now!)
I felt Wren and Theo were a little back and forth, but understandable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as much as and maybe even more than the first!
I didn’t think these series could get any better and then @karajmcdowellbooks wrote Heir, Apparently 👑🌋
Thank you @wednesdaybooks for my #gifted copy!
Alright, as I’m sure many of you know, The Prince & The Apocalypse was one of my favorite books of 2023. The book ends on a total cliffhanger and I was left with the biggest book hangover. When I finished, I immediately dm’ed Kara to ask if there would be a sequel. Low and behold THERE IS AND I GOT TO READ IT EARLY!!!
🚨 minor spoilers if you haven’t read the first book. If you haven’t read this series yet, I recommend you stop reading and go get the first book asap!
In the second installment, Wren and Theo are back to a whole lot of shenanigans, and I loved every ridiculous moment. Wren is now a freshman at Northwestern and Theo is the King. In an attempt to get Comet back, Wren ends up on a plane with Theo and his siblings when it crashes. Can they find their way back to civilization?
Yall yes this book is CRAZY and RIDICULOUS in all the best ways possible 🙃 I was laughing out loud and soaking in every moment of all the craziness. Was this one a bit soapier than the first book? Yes. Did it work? Yes.
So, while this book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger 👀 I’m still holding out hope that we get a third book. I feel like Wren and Theo still got some adventures left in them, and I want to be apart of their wild journeys together.
Out July 9!

This was a great follow up to book one! So much happens, lots of it unbelievable and convenient.. but I was along for the rode because i grew to love the characters!
3.5/5
I really enjoyed The Prince and the Apocalypse so I was really excited to read the sequel and see where Wren and Theo's story took them next!
I really liked that in The Prince and the Apocalypse, we got to see Theo and Wren bond and in Heir, Apparently, we get to know both families. The problem with starting a series with a dramatic situation is that the keep the same type of story going you have to create more dramatic situations. The second one is never quite as compelling as the first one. The plane crash felt a little forced but it did create a situation where everyone could bond out of public scrutiny.
I was definitely rooting for Theo and Wren to get their HEA. I loved how he was protective of her as well as his family. I thought it was really interesting that all the siblings viewed being royalty so differently. I also liked that the characters could reflect on how Comet Week changed them. I think we often don't realize how much big events affect us until afterward.
If you loved the first one I think you'll like this one! It brings back the excitement and high stakes from the first one and throws some new characters in the mix!
🌶️- This one includes some kisses but is completely closed door.
Okay, so I admit, I love these kind of royal "alternate reality:" books and this one is no exception. I read the first book and loved the Wren and Theo and was anxious to read the continuation of their story. It was not exactly what I expected. Instead of a palace and how Ren Iweadapts to royal life, I got an uninhabited island and various relatives and friends. But it kind of stayed true to the "everything bad that could happen, does" of the first book. and that is why I think I enjoyed it so much. The circumstances that Wren and Theo find themselves in could happen to anyone (well, maybe not everyone) and I think that is what draws the reader in--the royalty part is the an added bonus. I also loved the ending--although I think it seemed a little rushed, it might not be what the reader expects of this kind of book, but I think it was perfect.
I didn’t realize this was the second book in a series, but I felt like I knew enough to understand the story. This was a wild ride! Every time I thought the author was creating some drama just to pull back, things got more and more complicated. I appreciated the bit of unrealism of all of the chaotic events and really loved Wren and Theo’s story (along with their cast of friends and family). And who doesn’t love a royal love story?
I didn’t realize when I requested this ARC that it was a sequel but I still really enjoyed it! The writing was great, storyline fun and easy to follow, characters were easy to follow and figure out. I did find it slightly more juvenile than I expected considering the genre but overall very well done!
I flew through this book so quick (I read it in a day!) because it was one of my most anticipated reads of the years. I absolutely adored the first book in this series and was so excited to get an early copy of Heir, Apparently.
Luckily, this second book did not disappoint! It had all of the crazy action we saw in the The Prince and the Apocalypse, and I was here for it. I wasn’t sure how they could make it entertaining after the comet DIDN’T land - But boy was I wrong!!
We got an added bonus of getting to know Theos siblings and that was such a fun addition to the book! So many different personalities and dynamics.
If you love a “lost on an island” trope AND “royals” - then this book is for you! It’s perfect for reading wanting a clean young adult book that’s packed with action and romance!
Thank you Netgalley and St Martins Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my goodness, have I been anxiously awaiting this sequel! I loved The Prince & The Apocalypse so much and the way that it ended was such a cliffhanger. Yay for the apocalypse being avoided, but now what?!?! Heir, Apparently answered all of my questions and wrapped everything up in an unexpected, but incredibly satisfying, way.
The choice to have them in a forced proximity situation was perfect. They had no choice but to face their feelings and figure out what they actually wanted. It also gave us the opportunity to see more of Theo's family and their dynamics. I appreciated the realistic portrayal of being in the royal family and that it wasn't sugarcoated to make things into a simple fairytale. Theo was bound by his obligations and finding a way to continue their relationship was no easy task., but so worth it.
I highly recommend this series to fans of YA romance and those who enjoy a healthy dose of Royal gossip!
Thank you so much to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for this eARC. All opinions are my own.
