Ahhh I love this book! It’s a totally over-the-top, non-stop thrill ride with so much everything. Great banter, I usually hate when a bunch of side characters come into the picture, but I didn’t hate it this time. The ending is complete and happy.
3.5 stars. I loved The Prince and The Apocalypse last year, so I was really excited to get approved for its sequel Heir, Apparently. It was a fun and wild ride, just like the first. Wren and Theo went from trying to survive the apocalypse, to trying to survive a plane crash on a remote island. These characters have been put through the wringer! I wanted a little more oomph from Wren and Theo’s initial reunion, but lots of sweet scenes throughout made up for it. There’s a fun supporting cast, and I felt satisfied with the ending. Love this author and her fun YA rom coms!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martins, and Kara McDowell for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was an amazing sequel to 'The Prince and the Apocalypse'. Usually rom-com sequels aren't the greatest to read, but this one exceeded my expectations. It was a breeze, one I genuinely needed, however that factor is a blessing and a curse. This book just didn't stick out to me. No problems, no notes - it just doesn't stick out.
Heir, Apparently by Kara McDowell was an enjoyable read infused with good humor. Picking up a few months after where the first book, The Prince & the Apocalypse, left off, Wren Wheeler finds herself a bit out of sorts. When the world didn't end, life went on - and she tried to move on, really. But then she finds out she might have actually married the prince (oops) and finds out he's in Canada WITH HER DOG. Off she sets, setting in motion and adventure that includes a plane crash, a volcano on a deserted island, a shocking revelation about the royal family, a fair amount of paparazzi problems, and so much more.
Heir, Apparently was fast paced, a little ridiculous at times (which only helped me enjoy it more) and took several twists and turns I wasn't expecting - making it a very fun time. I loved seeing the characters continue to develop and learning more about Wren and Theo. Overall, an excellent extension of the story!
After the way the first book ended, I was really excited to read this! The first third of the book was thrilling and I flew through it. I loved getting to know Theo's siblings and learning more about his world! It was also fun to see more of Wren's best friend Naomi and her sister Brooke. I enjoyed the higher stakes in this book and ultimately I liked it more than book 1, but I found that similar to book 1 I liked the beginning of this book better than the ending. Overall, Heir, Apparently was such a fun read and I'd give it 4.55 stars out of 5.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for an e-arc in exchange for a review!
Well, my friends, even though the first book’s royal family and apocalypse theme made me question what was happening in the main plot, I quickly got hooked on the action-packed, well-characterized plot. I screamed when I reached the cliffhanger because I had no idea this was a duology, and I started to squirm because this meant I had to wait to find out what was going to happen next! Thankfully, I got the ARC copy, which lessened my palpitations and prevented me from having to wait until July, which is the release date! Thank goodness, anticipation is always killing me!
Did I enjoy the sequel with the plot line: irritating royals and their political schemes, forbidden love, trapped on an island theme, which fueled the adrenaline-pumping action scenes? Guess what, I loved the sequel and its satisfying conclusion so much more!
The second book picks up where the author left things in the primary book: Wren Wheeler is starting her freshman year after surviving the apocalypse and finding out the earth-shattering news that her elopement with the King of England is real! But she hasn’t heard from him, which pushes her to move on with her life as if their wedding ceremony in Greece never happened. Unfortunately, her rescue attempt of Comet, the famous Apocalypse dog, ends with her unexpected reunion with Theo, and it seems like there are still some unfinished business between them; their chemistry is still palpable. She finds herself flying to London to get protected from another paparazzi attack that may also ruin the entire reputation of the royal family. But their plan never arrives in London with another twist of fate, as it crashes onto a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. And unfortunately, they are not alone: Naomi, Brooke, Henry, the siblings also accompany them on their survival journey.
Being stranded in a place without any hope of rescue, with the threats of poisonous animals, catastrophic injuries, and an ill-timed volcano, is not the only trouble they have to face. The unresolved problems, long years of rivalry between brothers, and their endless passive-aggressive war turn into something more aggressive at each moment. Also, there are so many troubles in Wren and Theo’s emotional state that hit bricks with so many misunderstandings on both sides.
As they try to find a way to get rescued from this mysterious place, they also have to find a way to face their problems that prevent them from building healthier, more honest relationships. Could they achieve both of them? Could the brothers bury their hatchets, and could Wren and Theo catch their second chance in love by overcoming the misunderstandings and the huge gap separating them apart?
Wow, the action-packed parts of this book made me dizzy, absolutely kept me on my toes! I couldn’t finish faster, even skipping my nature calling! (Next time, I'll wear adult diapers during fast-paced, unputdownable readings, a lesson I still refuse to learn).
I’m giving another five stars for this heart-throbbing, adventurous romance! Looking forward to reading and reviewing more works by Kara McDowell.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital review copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.
In support of the SMP boycott, I will be withholding my review of this title until SMP speaks out. If the boycott is resolved, I will update with a full review.
When I requested this arc I did not realize it was a second book. So before I read this I had to read the prince and the apocalypse real quick. While I found both books enjoyable I definitely preferred heir apparently. The first 2/3 of the book were funny and I flew through it. Something about then end third just wasn’t as enjoyable to me. It seemed to lack humor and I feel like I wanted more of wren and Theo interacting together. Still a good read though.
How fun was this!
I’m not sure what I was expecting in this sequel, but it definitely was not what was delivered - in a good way. If you go into this book expecting it to be realistic, you’ll be sorely disappointed. But if you can get over the lack of realism, it’s a true joy to read and I devoured it in a little over a day. We got to know some side characters a little more in this book, including Wren’s sister Brooke, her best friend Naomi, and the royal siblings. The banter is well-done, the pacing keeps you flipping through the pages, and it was overall a nice casual break from all the dark in the world right now.
Heir, Apparently picks up months after the conclusion of The Price and the Apocalypse. Wren seeks out Comet (and Theo, of course :) ) as Theo and his siblings are visiting Canada. When Wren and Theo are photographed together by the paparazzi, they’re forced to have Wren travel to London with Theo in order to help best manage the response and provide some temporary protection for Wren. On their way to London, their plane goes down and they must survive on the island as they await rescue.
While we met a lot of side characters during Wren and Theo’s journey in TPATA, we get to see a lot more of Wren’s best friend Naomi, along with Wren and Theo’s families.
If you loved TPATA, you must check out the sequel, not simply as a follow-up from the cliffhanger of the first, but because it’s another adventure/conflict packed journey that Wren and Theo again must navigate through together. Even with the extended cast in this book, Wren and Theo are still able to get so much time together in the story as they strive to work out and process the events from TPATA.
I missed Wren and Theo so much and was so happy to be reunited with them. The sequel is a different story from the first and I was really curious how the story and pacing would compare without the threat of an impending apocalypse, but Kara McDowell was able to create another face paced, twist and turn story from the beginning to the end.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this continuation of the series. It was very well written and the romance was very well done and I could not put it down.
💫 “My eyes land on Theodore Geoffrey Edward George. The king of England. My maybe husband. The boy who broke my heart.” 💫

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Kara Mcdowell for providing an arc not once, but twice for both of the books in this duology. I will forever be eternally grateful to you for giving me the series 🥰
When receiving the arc for The Prince & The Apocalypse last July, I didn’t think it was possible to fall so hard for two characters. I connected so deeply Wren Wheeler and I never rooted for couple so hard in my life!
read if you love:
-friends to lovers
-amazing banter/chemistry
-representation for panic attacks/depression
-cliff hangers
my synopsis:
In Heir Apparently, the universe and fate definitely had it out for these two and consistently tested their love! it was a great love story about choosing to love yourself first, being able stand up, and recognize when something isn’t for you. Or when something or someone is. It’s about not leaving things up to fate and going after your dreams even it scares you.
I loved every single second of this series and could read a million more pages on the lives of Wren and Theo, but for now I’ll just imagine all the different scenarios in every universe (including this one) where they always end up finding each other. 🥹🫶🏻
If you are looking for a sickening sweet romcom with great banter please check out this book everywhere on July 9th, 2024 <3
Kara McDowell has done it again! The sequel to The Prince and the Apocalypse did not disappoint, keeping you on the edge of your seat with disaster after disaster. While Heir, Apparently continues the story of Wren and Theo, the side characters are brilliant in their own right adding mischief and hilarity. I highly recommend both books to all!
Heir, Apparently by Kara McDowell is a much needed sequel. While I enjoyed the first book much more, this finishes the story beautifully. The characters and their adventure pulls you in, and the truth comes out. It is definitely a must read if you have read the Prince and the Apocalypse, and if you have not, maybe you should.
This YA Rom-Com was phenomenal! I couldn't put it down! I laughed out loud at points and I am absolutely obsessed with this!! It's the YA version of a Christina Lauren book! Love love love this!!
I just reviewed Heir, Apparently by Kara McDowell. #NetGalley

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the arc of this book.
3/5 stars
I liked this sequel almost as much as I liked the first book.
Surviving the apocalypse and a plane crash Theo and Wren finally, FINALLY get their happy ending.
I did find myself internally screaming at them to just be honest and tell each other the truth, but I guess that’s pretty accurate for a couple of teenagers.
I loved these books, they’re easy to read and fast paced. Just a light hearted romance (aside from the existential dread)
HEIR, APPARENTLY by Kara McDowell is the sequel to the much-loved The PRINCE AND THE APOLOLYPSE. Like its predecessor, it's a contemporary Young Adult Adventure Romance. For the short version of my review: I absolutely loved this book! It begins a couple of months after the events of the previous book. Wren, who isn't sure whether she's married to the King of England, Theo, decides she's had enough of following the news about him and her dog she and Theo found, Comet. She's going to go to London to take back her pet. Hijinks, and some unexpected disasters ensue, including some interesting twists regarding Theo's siblings. Preorder this entertaining book, and then prepare to read it in one sitting.
Like the previous novel, this story was a ROMP. There was action, adventure, and the slow burn rekindling of romance. There's luxurious rooms, escaping from the press, a plane crash, and unexpected eruptions of all sorts. Throughout it all, there's a pull between Wren and Theo that is masterfully examined through the lens of the burdens of fame in this day and age.
Here's what I enjoyed most about the novel:
- Wren continues to be a very relatable character. She's feeling lost and untethered because she doesn't know what she wants. What she does know is that she still feels an irresistible draw towards Theo.
- Theo is such a conflicted, yet kind, person who only wants the best for the woman he loves. As in the last book, he shows Wren his vulnerabilities in a way that is very touching and feels deep-rooted in real life, regardless of whether he's a royal or not. His life is overshadowed by his fame, and I was reminded of stories about the royals and other famous people whom the press won't leave alone.
- We get to meet two of Theo's siblings in this story, Henry and Victoria. They are such well-crafted characters. Victoria's haughtiness that's pierced by her attachment to Comet made her more human, and I gradually warmed up to her. Henry was smart, snarky, and interesting right from the start... and cute, which doesn't hurt.
- We get to know Naomi, Wren's best friend, and Brooke, Wren's older sister, much more in this story. I love how Naomi is the rock that Wren doesn't realize she needs. Brooke continues to be more of an enigma to me as a reader, however, it's enjoyable to see her relationship with Wren evolve in a good way over the course of the story. She also is the one who uncovers one of the big twists in the novel. Duh, duh, DUUUUNNNN.
- At the end of the novel, there's a satisfying ending that I never would have predicted, but that I really believe in.
What could use a second look:
- Honestly, I can't think of anything.
HEIR, APPARENTLY is a well-written romp of a contemporary YA Adventure Romance. I loved the characters, the action, the revelations, and, of course, the romance. Like the first book in this series, it was the escape I needed.
Thank you to NetGally and St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books, for providing me with an eARC of this book for my honest feedback.
I was so excited to receive an ARC of Heir, Apparently by Kara McDowell because I absolutely loved The Prince &The Apocalypse. Heir Apparently doesn't disappoint. This time, Wren heads to Canada where the now King is scheduled to appear with Comet, the apocalypse dog and Wren wants to get him back. She also wants to find out the status of her marriage, was it real? But nothing goes according to plan and Wren, her sister, Theo, his sister Victoria and brother Henry wind up crash landing on an isolated volcanic island... will they ever get off? A fun novel that you won't want to put down! Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
If you are reading this review, you’re reading it for one reason and one reason alone. To find out if the sequel to the Prince and the Apocalypse is everything you’ve been hoping, wishing and praying it will be. So, is it? IS it as amazing as the first? Is it everything we’ve been pleading and pining for? HELL, FREAKING, YES!!!!!!!!!! It is rare—so, so rare my friends—that that an author delivers the sequel of your dreams. But Kara McDowell did it. When I finished the ARC of the Prince and the Apocalypse back in July 2023, the first thing I did was google, (with lightening fast fingers) will there be a sequel? At that time, there was no news. No plans. Nothing. It pained me to think I’d never know the real end to Wren and Theo’s story. Luckily, the universe heard my plea! And this beautiful, brilliant, adrenaline inducting master piece of a sequel was born. I don’t know how Kara did it. How she recreated the same life or death scenarios we experienced in the first book without it seeming hooky, or unrealistic or forced, I’ll never know. But she did it and it was magic. Read and enjoy. You don’t need to know anything else. It’s another wild and epic journey with the perfect ending you wont see coming.
“Heir, Apparently” is such a fun sequel to “The Prince and the Apocalypse”! The continuation of Wren and Theo’s possible romance is so sweet. I loved the addition of friends and family in the adventure. These stories are just so enjoyable and unique!
