Okay so it starts a bit sad BUT it gets better. Um I could t read this once it got dark cause I'm a scaredy cat and jump at any little noise. That being said, I loved it. I'm definitely recommending and adding this to my spooky season list
Kelley Armstrong has written a riveting and unique ghost story that I couldn’t put down. On a snowy night Nicola Laughton loses her husband of two years in a car accident. It was never supposed to happen like this. Nicola who has cystic fibrosis fully expected she would die first, and in her grief spends the next year going to seances and exposing the cons. Allowing herself one last seance before stopping forever she sets up a weekend with an impartial professor, her brother in law, and young friend who is also grieving having lost her sister, trying to contact Anton one last time. What a wild and wonderful ride this book was.
This is a decent supernatural thriller. The only problem I had was the explanation of what happened bc they characters legitimately say 'i don't want to explain it' so I don't know what really happened.
Two deaths were very confusing and the timeline of how one happened made zero sense. I'm still confused.
But for a throwback to Satanic Panic and some scientific exploration of the paranormal, this book does the job.
Nic, a woman dealing with the devastating loss of her husband, Anton, in a tragic car accident—a twist of fate made all the more poignant by her own struggle with cystic fibrosis (CF), which she had always assumed would claim her life first. In her hunt for closure, Nic turns to a familiar yet fraught method: a seance. Accompanied by a small group—her brother-in-law, her brother's ex-wife, and Shania, a friend from her grief counseling class— she enlists Dr. Cirillo to lead the seance. Eerie situations start to occur, and it reminds Nic of her complicated past with seances creating the stage for the supernatural to take over.
I loved reading this book! I love her books so much, and oh, this ghost story was so fantastic! And of course all of these characters are level-headed and have heaps of common sense, even when maybe something is going on that isn't so common, when there really might be some paranormal going/s on!
This is a book about grief and loss, and trying to put the pieces back together without that person. I really felt for Nic, that she was the one that they were expecting to pass first, and then there was the accidence that killed him. That their private goodbye was made public and viral just put salt in the wound.
The relationships that Nic has with her family, that one of her friends is her brother's ex-wife, and the other is said brother's husband, and all of them get along, that was really great! I'm really glad that she had that support system of people who cared for her!
The ghosts and the spooky goings on, as well as whatever happened when she was a teen, I just wanted to know what was going on. It was just so tense and intriguing, and I absolutely loved watching it all come together!
I did like her other horror book currently published just a tad more, but that's because there was a romance that could continue on, whereas here, Nic's husband is dead, which is the main part of the plot, why they're gathered to do this seance, and it's not like their romance can continue while she's still alive. Otherwise I loved it just as much!
Loved reading this book and I can't wait to read more by Kelley Armstrong!
WoW! Just WOW! Kelley Armstrong never fails to amaze me. “I’ll be Waiting” is a horror story at its best, one that will keep you from start to finish wondering what will happen next. Nicola is an adult CF patient who is desperate to get in contact with her recently deceased husband. Through her story, the reader learns of a tragedy in Nicola’s past that brings bearing on her current situation. In a last ditch effort to contact her husband, Nic allows her sister-in-law to locate an unbiased researcher to conduct the seance which is held at the creepy family home of her husband’s family that is now a rental property. I loved that the story didn’t center on Nic’s CF. The characters were complex and well drawn out. There are so many twists and turns that make the story that much more compelling. A stand-alone absolutely worth reading for fans of horror, ghost stories, and of course, Kelley Armstrong fans. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advance copy in return for an honest review.
A twisty new mystery from Kelley Armstrong. Nicola thought that she would only live to her thirties because of her cystic fibrosis. She meets Anton who gave her hope until he dies in a car crash. ..
Lots of twists, The suspense is terrific and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot is great and ffresh. A terrific story.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
This is one of those books that when I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one sitting, staying up until 1AM because I couldn’t stop reading until I knew what happened.
I’ve read several books by this author and she knows how to hook you. Highly recommend if you like books about ghosts, possession and hauntings.
What a ride that was! What starts with a tragedy evolves into a world of seances, ghosts, what's real and what is not. I enjoyed the glimpses into Nic's past, bringing the story together. While I did suspect who was behind it all, I did not expect the twist.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGallery for the advanced copy in return for an honest review. Loved it!
A really great ghost story. There were some parts of the dialogue that were a bit awkward, but I overall I enjoyed the book.
