**⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | An Essential Guide to Understanding Gender Identity**
Jack Turban’s *Free to Be: Understanding Kids & Gender Identity* is an exceptional and insightful resource that sheds light on the complexities of gender identity in children and adolescents. Turban combines scientific research with compassionate storytelling to provide a comprehensive understanding of gender diversity. The book is both informative and accessible, offering practical advice for parents, educators, and caregivers on how to support and affirm gender-diverse youth. Turban’s expertise and empathetic approach make this book a crucial tool for fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all children.
What an amazing resource! I would recommend this to anyone. A better understanding of those around us we may not understand is crucial for humanity. I learned so many things scientifically and personally of people from many different walks of life.
Excellent and comprehensive coverage of gender identity in the present moment, though it's not clear who the intended audience is | This book really covers it all, from the medicine to the psychology to the history to the politics and the pseudoscience (hint: there's no such thing as "rapid onset gender dysphoria", tiktok isn't making kids trans, nobody is performing genital surgery on children, and cis athletes aren't having accomplishments "stolen" by trans folks). I requested the arc because this is already a topic I try to remain informed on, so there wasn't anything here that was actually new to me. But it does, with meticulous research and citations, address things I hear all the time, even from well-meaning people, so I know the contents are valuable. The question is, who is going to find the time for such a dense book if they're not already well-versed in these facts? Parents of trans youth, hopefully, and care providers (foster parents, teachers, social workers, etc), but will people who could have already learned this elsewhere and didn't even find this? It's hard to say. A little too much reliance on footnotes, it sometimes felt that most of the facts were contained there, but overall really an excellent book. Hopefully soon the sections discussing anti-trans rhetoric will be outdated. I will recommend this one.
A look into transgender identity in youth from a doctor who works with transgender youth. I liked that this included a lot of real-life stories from youth and how their families either accepted them or not, or grew to accept them. This was definitely a good read, especially for families that might have a child who is transgender.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fantastic resource and I found it particularly helpful and insightful. I honestly wish everyone would read this book for education and awareness. Such an important book, especially today. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
I thought this was a great book about gender. It's interesting how differently kids and teens view gender and this book did a good job explaining it. I appreciated the profiles of teens that were included in the book.
Free to Be by Jack Turban is a very accessible explanation of gender and sexuality. He offers well-researched information, and dives into the history of the topic.
I received an ARC from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I decided to pick this one up whilst in a reading slump. I am so glad I did! It really got me thinking about the relationship between gender identity and the world. Throughout this book, I felt invited to consider my own gender identity and, for a book that is heavily reliant on science and psychological trials, I really felt compelled to keep reading. Turban really addressed the wide array of topics surrounding transness well. I found it easy to follow and comprehend. I found his approach to the topic by providing real-life examples to be the best rhetoric he could have relied upon to make his call to action. Because that’s what this book is. A call to action to consider your own biases and your own identity. It was truly a worthy read!
I am not a medical doctor; however I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Overall, I found that this book contains a lot of helpful information for those
The author does a fantastic job introducing himself and his story. It is clear that Dr. Turban wants the reader to know his credentials, but moreso why he got into this work to begin. While the antcedotes and information throughout is important, establishing this ethos gave me the reassurance to continue reading.
