I loved Stone Cold Fox and was so excited to see Croft had a new one coming out. We Love the Nightlife was so much fun. I loved the disco of it all, Amber's slow awakening into her own woman, the unraveling of Nicola's past, and the examination of just how toxic a toxic friendship can get. Rachel is one to watch for sure and I will be picking up anything she writes with utter delight.
I had a bloody fun time tearing through this book! We Love the Nightlife follows Nicola and Amber — two glamorous party girls in 1979 London with a passion for disco and a thirst for more than just the city’s lavish club scene. Told across decades and dual POVs, Rachel Koller Croft pens the complicated timeline of two female vampires, unraveling the highs and lows of their toxic friendship.
I am a vampire girlie through and through, so I was immediately sold upon reading the synopsis. This book delivered on every aspect promised in the premise — gossip, glitz, and gore. London (and its captivating nighttime culture) plays a huge role in Nicola and Amber’s story. The choice to set the novel here, and the details that the author included, created a vibrant backdrop for our two magnetic leads. It was a thrilling landscape for Nicola and Amber’s cat-and-mouse games, offering up rich history and electrifying allure.
Nicola and Amber are complex, vindictive, and undeniably fabulous. There is an intense push and pull between them as they scramble to tip the scales of power in their own favor. I wanted to curl up on a chaise and simply observe the ferociousness of it all. Their friendship is poisonous and seductive, forged from sharing countless dance floors and devilish deeds. Nicola and Amber are not good by any means, but the story is all the better for it. It’s bitchy and biting — exactly what I want from hedonistic, party girl vamps!
I truly savored every moment of this book because I did not want it to end. Rachel Koller Croft has quickly risen to become one of my favorite authors, and We Love the Nightlife perfectly exemplifies her sharp wit and singular voice.
Thank you Berkley and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book is the perfect combination between a vampire story and a glamorous thriller! The depiction of the characters is perfection, and the storyline keeps the readers on their toes!
Although the pacing was a bit slow in the beginning, it did not deter me from continuing to immerse myself in the story.
A slow build dual timeline with two women MCs.
Nicola - an aged vampire with a massive need to be the needed central figure in her offspring's life
Amber - a woman looking to get out of her maker's clutches
A fun read, rich with codependency and vampires.
What a bloody good time! Amber & Nicola are disco loving vampires but disco has long since died and so has Amber's enthusiasm to live under Nicola's thumb. Since Nicola is the vampire who turned her, Amber knows getting out from Nicola's clutches won't be easy, but she's spent 40+ years as a vampire charming the people of London so she's up for the challenge.
I read this in one sitting without even meaning to. The female characters are complicated and flawed and their relationship is definitely toxic with a capital T but the writing never strays into villain caricature. I loved the setting of London--and since we're talking about vampires here-- London's nightlife scene. The glitz, the glamour, the exhilaration of being on the dance floor-it's all captured marvelously. Male vampires have stolen all the glory for far too long--it's time to give some women the spotlight and this book does it wonderfully.
Many thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for the ARC.
The premise of this sounded fantastic, but I just couldn't click with the writing style or narrative voice, which made what should've been a frothy fun time feel like a slog.
We Love the Nightlife takes the classic vampire lore and gives it a twist - these vampires aren’t in it for sex or love. They just want to dance in the best nightclubs every night for forever. Amber has been a vampire for 40 years, living with her maker Nicola. As Nicola’s controlling nature begins to chafe, Amber starts to look for ways out. As she begins to ask the questions she should have asked from the beginning she uncovers secrets that go deeper than she ever imagined.
I really enjoyed reading from Nicola’s perspective in the present and Nicole’s perspective in the flashback chapters. The reveal was surprising to me and the plot really kept me guessing. My only complaint was that the middle dragged a little as I was expecting more conflict between the characters.
I think I’m going to have to DNF this one, at least for now. I’m at 50% and it has just lost my interest completely. I love vampires (Vampire Diaries girly forever) but there is just not enough action or plot taking place to keep me from getting bored. I was expecting much more excitement. I loved Stone Cold Fox, so I hate not finishing… maybe it’s more of a “not right now,” for me. We will see.
Would recommend for fans of…
🪩 Twilight
🪩 Stone Cold Fox
🪩 Last Night in Soho
We Love the Nightlife was one of my most-anticipated books of this year and boy did it live up to my expectations! The story is told through two POVs – Amber and Nicola. Nicola has been a vampire for more than two hundred years and Amber is her closest friend, after becoming a vampire on the eve of the 1980s. However, their friendship has fractured over the years and Amber is now looking for an exit strategy.
Even though We Love the Nightlife is about vampires, it’s different then any vampire book I’ve ever read. While it has all of the elements you’d expect from a vampire story, at its core it’s a story about toxic friendships that transcends any genre or time period which will captivate any reader – regardless of how much you like vampires.
I really enjoyed how suspenseful the story was, while also incorporating all of the glitzy and glamorous vibes of London in the 1970s. Rachel Koller Croft did a great job of capturing a very specific time and place and it was so easy to picture the setting as I was reading. It was all very cinematic and I could see this making a great movie (Margot Robbie is my pick to play Amber).
We Love the Nightlife is out on August 20th and you absolutely must add it to your TBR. It will make the perfect read to close out the summer!
Thanks to Berkely for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
This is a unique modern vampire story told between current times and flashbacks to the past. I loved the last book by this author so I really wanted this to work for me but I found the writing to be cheesy. (So much winking!) the concept of toxic female friendships from a vampire perspective with interesting power dynamics was a good concept though and I am still interested to read more from this author in the future even if this writing style wasn't for me this time around.
Croft’s last box, Stone Cold Fox, was on my 2023 Best Book lists. I loved her writing and storytelling. We Love the Nightlife is a vampire story and while I loved the writing and her characters, the whole vampire aspect of the book was hard for me to get into.
Two vampires, one in control, and one desperate to break free. Told in the past and in the present, Amber has had all she can take from Nicola. But leaving won’t be easy, and Amber needs a full proof plan.
The story oozes with drama, and the disco scene from 1979 when these two met plays a large role in their story. Can Nikola recapture those early days by opening a new club? Or will this be the last dance for both of them. Such an unusual and intriguing vampire story with an ending that was to die for.
A fun, nostalgic , funny, cynical look at toxic friendships between two women. Two women who are vampires with a big power difference , as one tries to escape the other. Can she get out. There is dependency, sexual undertones and a push pull dynamic. At times it was a bit gory for me. Will the good win out or is she destined to repeat the past
Big thank you to NetGalley, Berkley Publishing Group, and Rachel Koller Croft for the advanced copy that was gifted to me!
Not going to lie, this book took me awhile to read because I was reading it while in the middle of a huge reading slump—so totally a reflection of me and not the book! That said, it does have a slow beginning, but builds tension and suspense gradually throughout in a cat and mouse style thriller.
I mean, what a unique book! You won’t find another one like it, which seems unheard of these days. I loved Rachel’s debut novel Stone Cold Fox, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this one. While it shares some ideas (the cat and mouse thing, for one, and some characters you will love to hate), its execution is completely different.
For one, LOVED the setting! The timeline jumps around with the POV, so we see London in the 70s, 80s, and present day (am I a DJ for a radio station?), mainly, but we also have some other decades sprinkled in there. 🤗
I also found Rachel’s writing style to be one of a kind and a breath of fresh air. She has such a different voice to her writing that really gave this book, which had darker themes, a lighter tone throughout and definitely a good helping of humor. I found myself laughing throughout!
The plot twists build slowly, but they were believable and not too predictable. I especially loved the last third of the book when things really picked up—my jaw literally dropped at one point!
This one is worth a read!
This is a cat and mouse suspense that will keep the reader engaged in the story. Two friends, Nicola and Amber. Both vampires and both strong women! This book started off so good but lost it's sizzle toward the end. The vampire part was very interesting. The fangs, staying out all night, the toxic friendship! It is all a good experience!
Betrayal, Heart-pumping, and Trapped in a friendship! 3 stars!
Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy. This book will be released 8/20/24.
If you think you've read every vampire plot, this book will show you that you have not!
Female vampires, London and the disco scene in 1979- yes, please!
This was so much fun! Get your disco playlist ready and dive into this whirlwind of glamour, drama and nightlife.
This was such a unique, cat and mouse thriller. It was definitely more of a slow burn, character driven story with a bit less action than I would have liked. But the second half picked up and kept me guessing until the end. Much like with Rachel’s previous book Stone Cold Fox, she writes characters that you either love to hate or hate to love and this was no different. Read if you like toxic female relationships, disco dancing vampires, dual POV’s, and past and present timelines.
Thank you so much to Berkley and The Emily’s for this copy!
When there are two female vampires with their own agendas on how to live their forever youthful life in a toxic relationship, there is definitely scope for drama and with disco/glamorous nightlife thrown in, it keeps the drama quotient a notch higher. Nicola turns Amber into a vampire and they live as companions but after 50 years or so when Amber uncovers truth about Nicola and her nefarious actions, she is now no longer interested in being her companion and wants out. But with all toxic relationships, there is no easy way out and one has to scheme the life out to get rid of such people but Amber is smart enough to handle these.
It is a vampires based plot but is unlike any others that I have read so far. It does start slow but once it is halfway, there is continuous drama and some interesting reveals! Thank you to NetGalley & Berkley Publishing for my ARC!
1979. Bored and jaded vampire meets Amercian Amber, young, lovely, and who shares her love of disco. Nicola offers Amber the opportunity of a lifetime, join her as a vampire and be friends together forever.
Almost fifty years later, the luster has worn off of this eternal existence for Amber. Nicola is manipulative and controlling and Amber wants out. She’s got an elaborate plan, to find her replacement and escape before Nicola can uncover her plot. As her plan unfolds, so do secrets long-buried, and if Nicola finds out, Amber might not live long enough to escape.
I’ll admit. I read it with the hope that there may be sapphic vampires. There aren’t, but the toxic and deeply entangled friendship between Amber and Nicola, plus the secrets and plot twists made up for my dashed gay hopes. It was a wild ride!
It’s coming out in August, so if you’re into vampires, the night life, and toxic female friendships, check it out.
