I recommend this collection to my fellow horror lovers of almost every age. These stories are fun because they feel real; the locations are specific and the situations are realistic -- up to a point. Stories are much scarier when they feel like they could really happen, and these have just the right amount of fear before bringing us back into the safe, everyday world. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Grab some smores, settle around the campfire, and brace yourself for some great stories! James Appleton spins tales in multiple settings with a variety of folklore, cryptids, ghosts, and legends all based in the Adirondacks. This is the perfect book to enjoy with friends around the fire and re-tell your favorite story that's sure to give everyone a fright! I will be pulling stories on our yearly camping trip for years to come! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley in an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Pure summer fun- true to its title, this is not a book meant to be read in one sitting. If you have any interest in cryptids, camping, campfire tales, or just giving yourself a little fright every night before bed, this is absolutely worth picking up. The author includes an adorable (and helpful!) guide to setting up your own campfire story night, where you can choose from Bigfoot sightings or local Adirondack folktales to share with your friends. My personal favorite (and by far the most claustrophobic and grim of all the stories in this collection) was The Haunting of Eagle Cave- a warning about the consequences of taking what isn't yours, and what the spirits may do to get it back. I could easily see this being a great series that I hope the author continues. He very clearly knows and loves the Adirondack wilderness and I would imagine has even more frightening tales to share with the world. I requested this book as an ARC from NetGalley, and enjoyed it enough that I'll be picking up a hardcopy for myself (and my Bigfoot obsessed father) when it's officially published.
If you are like me and love sitting around a cozy fire with all the lights off and scaring yourself then pick this up asap!
I had so much fun with James Appleton's 'Adirondack Campfire Stories' and I am looking forward to reading this to my family on our summer camping trip! I also enjoyed learning about an area that I was unfamiliar with!
Thank you James!
I love hearing supernatural and scary stories so I feel in love with this collection of Campfire stories and I cannot wait until I am camping to share these stories.
Adirondack Campfire Stories is simply what it says on the tin- the collection of stories doesn’t necessarily lend itself to long periods of reading but as individual stories they are spooky and enjoyable.
If you are a person who likes to sit around a nice fall bonfire and tell spooky stories, you will love this book! The author, James Appleton, is a licensed outdoor guide who grew up in the area where the stories are from. I loved each and every story. My favorites are The Haunting of Eagle Cave, The Ghost Town of Adirondac, The Legend of the Faust Lumberjack and Bigfoot in the Adirondacks. Very enjoyable, spooky read.
Adirondack Campfire Stories: Tales and Folklore from Inside the Blue Line
James Appleton
Picture yourself sitting around a campfire with the odor of wood burning smoke and the sound of sparks crackling in the cool night air. As you listen closely to the stories your guide shares with your group. You hear the crack of a stick in the bushes behind you. Is the Nye Wolf waiting to attack or was it your imagination? The guide moves on to his next tale and you imagine you hear wings as they beat the air. You listen closely as the guide tells one story after another including the story of a woman with an anchor tied around her neck; perfectly preserved by the cold water and the tale of Georgie the sea monster.
Author James Appleton shares tales all taking place on or around the Adirondack Mountains. Some of the tales take place on the trail, in the lake or on the mountain. The tales are all spooky ghost stories, tales of superstition, folklore and legend. These tales came from the author’s podcast some are pure fiction, but others are based on fact. They are interesting and well done.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book for review purposes.
Written by a licensed guide and expert on the Adirondacks, the book features ghost stories, folk tales and legends based in the Adirondack mountain region. Reminiscent of the type of books published way back in the 1960s though 1980s (and possibly even earlier and later) the book feels like a modern era collection of spooky and mysterious tales, as all but two take place in the 1990s or 21st century. They pretty much are apt to be told around a campfire when scary story time is at hand. The book is perfectly enjoyable for what it is.
