I saw the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie in the theater almost 30 years ago… yeah, it’s been that long! It changed something in me. It made me care about doing what’s right and made me love action and fighting comics, which led me to the X-Men, who made me feel like being different was okay. You could say it shaped my childhood in a way that made me a better person today.
Now, all those years later, seeing so many iterations of those original Rangers and how the fandom has grown, it’s so incredible to see them evolve into Rangers Academy. Where all across the universes, students are found and trained to take up the mantle.
What I love about this story is that, even more than they have been before, the cast of characters is so incredibly diverse and beautifully created in a way that makes any person reading feel seen. I don’t know if that would have happened so well without a writer like Maria Mora Ingrande.
I loved this so much!💜
I grew up with the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, so when I saw this was available, my inner five- through eight-year old was psyched. But while it's fun enough, and does have some excellent callbacks to the originals, I have to admit, I was a little bit disappointed overall; it just wasn't what I was really expecting. And that's no fault of the writing or the art - the writing is crisp, the art is vibrant, the diversity of the characters is wonderful - but simply a personal thing, and that's on me for not doing better research about what I was getting into. I was looking for the Power Rangers of my youth; while I don't necessarily get that from Ranger Academy, I'm so thrilled that an incarnation of the Rangers is still around for the youth of now.
An exciting conclusion but overall underwhelming for me. I felt like it was really dragging until the end of the 4th issue, which made me interested in what happens next. This definitely feels like something my student may be interested in, and could definitely see it as worth picking up for my school library.
So I think my main issues with this graphic novel were because of me personally and not with the book itself. I was a kid when the original Power Rangers came out, so nothing compares to that. That being said I had this expectation going into the volume and what I found was something that felt more like a Star Wars academy than my preconceived notion of Power Rangers. I did appreciate a non-binary ranger and the idea of more people being able to see themselves in superheroes.
I think this could be a series that some might enjoy - but it isn't for me.
Thanks to #NetGalley for an e-copy of #RangerAcademyVol1 to read and review.
This was a cute graphic novel, and I'm excited to see where it leads! I haven't consumed anything Power Rangers in years, but this reignited my interest in the franchise and I loved the - assumedly - queer characters.
I've long thought that the Power Rangers canon was too complex to jump into without some background knowledge. This book serves as an introduction for the uninitiated but doesn't dwell so much on the background as to become tiresome for long time fans. It creates it's own story with a complex cast of characters. A solid read for all kinds of readers.
This is a great way to get someone hooked on the Power Rangers. A really solid entry point into a very sprawling series. Well constructed, lovely art. Like all ongoing volumes, the ending is abrupt. Fair warning, you'll want to either sign up for the trade or binge watch your old favorite Ranger series (or both) after you finish this.
This reminded me a lot of space-ship-friends like Lunar Chronicles, Skyward or even Yumi. It was nice, but all things expected. I think it's a good start to a power-ranger based storyline.
This is an interesting idea to spin of the massive franchise that is Saban’s Power Rangers. I had some feelings about the way the book rushes through each character explanation and though it oiled do with more juxtaposition between stories. In all, I think the intended younger audience with appreciate and enjoy this graphic novel.
First of all, my excitement over having a non-binary Power Ranger will sustain me for so long. I’ve loved Power Rangers since I was a kid and it still holds a special place in my heart. I haven’t had a chance to read many of the other Power Ranger comics but it’s so much fun to read more about their lore and existence outside of the televised series.
Sage is such a fun character and I can’t wait to read more about her Ranger journey and to find out more of her dad’s backstory!
Thank you to NetGalley for making this available in exchange for an honest review!
A huge part of my childhood was watching the variations of the Power Rangers with my brothers. Seeing the future of ranger teams at Ranger Academy, I can't wait to read the next volume.
Sage's world is expanding...fast. After rescuing two Ranger Academy cadets when they crash land on the uncharted moon where Sage lives with her father, Sage learns there's an entire academy for people like her, people who want to help others. When her father refuses to let her go, she stows away and joins the academy as a late starting student. When faced with all that she doesn't know, doubt and regret start to affect her willingness to continue this journey until she sees traces of her father in the academy archives. Can Sage become a Power Ranger or will the Academy send her home? And what is it her father was trying to protect her from?
Thank you BOOM! Studios, BOOM! Box, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this wonderful book. This fun space adventure is the start of a new Power Ranger series. Great characters, fast moving action, and detailed illustrations make for a quick, fun read. Looking forward to the volume 2 and to share this book with my students.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the Publisher for allowing me to read this ARC!
Overall, this was such a fun read. As a kid I was absolutely enthralled with the Power Rangers, and returning to it as an adult has been such a blast. The art style is gorgeous and immersive, and I found myself really invested in the story (despite being older than the target audience). My nieces and nephews will definitely be clamoring to read this series, and I anticipate I will be too!
Definitely give this a shot if you enjoy reading graphic novels, it's so lighthearted and enjoyable. Nothing too complex, but that makes it the ideal read for young readers and up!
I really enjoyed this!! The art was amazing, and I’m so intrigued about this ranger academy! And a secret green campus?! I’ll definitely be looking out for more!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
This was such a good graphic novel! It would have been five stars but I rated it four (or more like 4.5 but I can't on goodreads) because the art color seemed to change from chapter 1 to 2 and it threw me off and there were some story points that confused me a tad bit. I hope they clear up the story points in future issues. I was a huge Power Rangers fan as a kid, that being said I remember nothing of them as an adult lol but I really enjoyed this story and different take on the lore of Power Rangers and how they come to be a Power Ranger. For anyone who like the Teen Titans graphic novel series, you should definitely give this one a read when it comes out because it gave me similar vibes and was a lot if fun!
