Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. I started this and completely forgot to re-look at the blurb to see that this is a re-telling of A Midsummer Night's Dream which adds to how much I enjoyed this. This was well-written and all of the characters had to grow in some way and understand the choices they had made might not be the best for their future. It was also so engaging that I flew through the book. Definitely recommend this book for those who love thew play or just want a good book. 4 stars.
A cute read which was something I needed right now. Glad I had the opportunity to read it. Thanks for the advanced copy.
Let me just say that I was very excited to read this! I was hearing about it all over BookTok! However, it left me wanting more. Book felt very repetitive, especially in the first half. I did not really connect with the characters. Overall a very cute and fun read, but I did not connect with it as much as I had hoped I would. I would love to reach something else by Rachel Magee!
Thanks to Netgalley & Thomas Nelson Fiction for the Digital arc!
This retelling of A Midsummer night's Dream just goes to show that Shakespeare is still relevant today as he was in his day. Because even when fictional blending families can be chaos and more so when the children involved are actual adults. Who don't know how to act like adults.
This is a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Midsummers Night Dream. Helena joins her mother on a week long trip for her mother's wedding. She brings her bed friend for moral support because she doesn't fit in with her future step siblings and their family. Emilia is the complete opposite. She takes care o her father and two siblings, while working hard at her job and trying to plan a wedding with her fiance. These characters come together for attempted family bonding, only it's not perfect. There are lots of funny moments, some sweet ones, and some realistic ones that highlight family dynamics and blending families. In really enjoyed this and loved getting to know all the characters. It was sweet how all of their differences ended up bringing them together. This is a wonderful women's fiction novel.
Fun, romantic comedy featuring a blending of families. I loved getting to know each of the characters as the author took time to develop them. Great book to curl up with for a weekend read!
This was a cute read. I loved the character development as well as the scene development. I liked the interactions between the characters and the scenes. It was as so much inner dialogue with each character that seemed to go on and on.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for this advanced reader copy. This is my honest opinion of this book.
This is the first book that I have read by Rachel Magee and I really enjoyed it. This was a very fun read for me. Going into it I didn't realize that it was a retelling of Midsummer Nights Dream. Not sure if I just didn't put two and two together at first, but once I recognized it, it made the book that much better.
Over-all - for me - this book was 4.5/5 stars. I think this would be the perfect book if you are looking for a rom-com in the summertime or even a beach read. It kept my interest throughout the whole book as well!
Will be recommending to all my friends!
I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
A retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midnight Summers Dream, This was a fun read. I think if I hadn’t just finished reading ‘The Wedding People’ by Alison Espach which is another book set over a week and involving a wedding, I would have loved this one a lot more. This one was very well written, just not quite as engaging or deep. Thanks Netgalley and the publisher.
Rachel Magee’s It’s All Relative is a modern retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Told in four different POVs (Helena, Amelia, Gage, and Landon), the story largely revolves around Helena’s mother’s wedding and a week-long stay at the Maddox family’s beach house. Although Helena is happy for her mother, she finds it difficult to fit it with the Maddox family (dubbed “The Perfects”), and things get complicated when she develops a crush on her soon to be SIL’s fiancé, Gage. Landon, Helena’s plus one for the week, discovers Helena’s soon to be SIL, Amelia, is the one who got away.
The story starts off strong with so much brewing conflict and a double romance, but is actually a fairly light read.
I was so intrigued by a Shakespeare modern twist plot. I haven’t read Shakespeare since high school, but I love a more digestible version of his classic love stories. The familial characters took a bit to comprehend but once I caught on it was a fun and twisted love triangle of sorts. Helena’s mom is getting marrried and she is about to have her 28 year old life turned upside down with a new step dad and stepsister, Amelia. Amelia’s dad is dating after her mom passed and she herself is engaged. When Helena likes Amelia’s fiancé the whole swapping and distracting fun begins. Light, cute modern romance.
Another fun retelling of one of my all-time favorite plays! I wasn't sure what to expect, but maybe that was a good thing, because this book left me feeling pleasantly surprised. Recommended!
I love modern retellings of Shakespeare's plays this one sounded like a good one for Midsummer Nights Dream. Over all I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun summer rom com.
A retelling of a Midsummers Night Dream combined with The Family Stone (movie). It was a quite book, not a lot happened, other than the upcoming wedding of a mom/dad and joining the adult children. It would be a great beach read- doesn't hold too much of a bunch, but events kept occurring to keep enough interest.
If you want an easy, quick, character-driven read then I think you'll enjoy this.
I really liked what it was about and seeing the thoughts of Helena and Amelia going into this change in their lives and as much as I wanted to not like Amelia's way of dealing with stuff I have so much empathy for her, I teared up a couple of times. I liked that it had multiple POVs cause it shows how each character can be panicking and all over the place but appear in another POV calm and collected. I liked all of these things and I really wanted it to be a 5 star read but there were a couple of things that affected that like the repetitiveness, how most of the characters lacked depth and the multiple POVs being written in third person. I still enjoyed it and think it's nice tho.
I switched between the e-book and the audiobook, the audiobook was clear and the narrator did a good job but I had some difficulty telling the POVs apart sometimes.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and listen to the advanced audio recording of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It's all relative by Rachel Magee is a rom-com that felt like watching a movie on the screen. There are good things and bad things, and oh I like a cosy rom com for sure, sometimes cheesy but this was too sweet truth be told.
Helena and Amelia are daughters of the bride and groom and the thing that first put me off was Helena had a crush on Amelia's fiancee. Whatever anyone had to say, I dislike it very much. It's not boyfriend ffs, it's fiancee. Also it was weird that Landon had never asked Helena anything at all about the family her mom was getting married into. That was too unrealistic given that they worked together and in this era with tech we are surrounded with. As story continued, it was getting clearer who was going to end up with whom but I couldn't just digest it. You can't be okay with a long relationship ending in a day. The awkwardness will be too much in reality. It was too far fetched.
The female characters were okay but make characters were almost non existent non influential, expendable, just to show support to the female characters. They had no rage, only love for the respective female characters. That not how real men are.
So as I said it was too sugered up to be real. Apart from that, if you keep all that aside this story was good. A fluffy story to begin with till the end. Good for one time read, also if they ever make movie based on it, I'm definitely gonna watch it because they are my comfort ones.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Nelson fiction for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.
Star rating : 3.5 stars
A swoon-worthy romcom that is a nice and cute read for summertime.
The themes explored include the strong and complicated bonds within a family, the power of friendship and love, and how embracing change can help you achieve a better life. The writing style is very fluid and light. The characters are funny, and their banter is a real pleasure. I had a great time reading it.
Similar to the original, all of these people are brought together by a wedding. Like Shakespeare's version, I couldn't help but believe that this one is less of a conventional plot line story and more of a character study.
We follow this flawed bunch of characters through humorous situations, endearing rom-com moments, and heartfelt discoveries. It follows the fundamental outline of the original with no significant plot twists, although it does have a joyful, heartwarming ending that deviates from precedent. It's an easy choice if you enjoy Shakespeare retellings and makes for a nice summer read.
It’s All Relative by Rachel Magee is an interesting set up for a rom-com with an obvious set up for a partner swap. I’ll be honest that I found it a bit awkward - if my sister-in-law was dating my ex fiancé I’m not sure how I would feel, even if I was dating someone else.
This book is told from four different perspectives, which made it hard to follow and keep track of everyone at first. It took me a few chapters to remember who was who, and even at the end I forgot what the father’s name was and wasn’t sure who they were referencing at first.
I thought the book was interesting but the fact that it was told over the course of a few days makes it feel like it’s all happening way too fast - for couples to break up and get together and be completely fine with it that quick is kind of weird to me.
Overall I thought it was cute but not my favorite. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the eARC.
it’s all relative tells the story of two families being united by a wedding. The main characters are to two daughters of the couple and their love interests. Mia is the classic eldest daughter, instead Helena is childish and messy. Landon is Helena’s best friend and Mia’s ex whether Gage is Mia’s fiancee and Helena’s crush.
As you could tell this all sounds very interesting, and even if i had a nice time i just wished the author would have risked more especially with the structure of the book and the character of Mia, exploring her need to control every single thing. Instead the relationships between the characters were similar and two-dimensional in fact Landon and Gage feels like they’re there to support the girls and their personality just mirrors them.
the first 50% of the book was fine and at times even engaging but the ending, particularly the epilogue really took me off. it was unrealistic and perhaps too sweet for my taste but i really can see this book being adapted into a movie.
