Short and intense to say the least. The USS Obama must be one of the unluckiest fast attack subs ever - set sail to find herself being targeted by an enemy submarine, that was soon despatched by her torpedoes; crewman stabbed in the back, killed; new crew member, ex homicide, given the task of investigating; more attacks by, this time, North Koreans, 2 NCIS agents picked up, one of them then stabbed in the back; explosion in "nukeland" where few people have authority to go; luckily badly set so minor damage rather than bye bye Obama. In between this non-stop action, there are highly detailed paragraphs about the boat herself, the crew, American defence-speke and so on. Well-written by an obvious sub enthusiast butt much too quickly. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

I read this book because I was interested in learning more about our nuclear submarine force and I am so glad to learn more, especially in these challenging times. The introduction of Jennifer Hobbs made this book not only more interesting, but she is a character who I definitely will follow. It's clear the author of this book has done his research on the USN Submarines. The detailed descriptions of the submarines, the hardware and the firepower did give slight hints of Tom Clancy. however, the story was lackluster. it was too short to really allow for a good development of the characters and of the plot itself. it started out enjoyable, but the rest of it felt rushed. Overall, it was a quick and easy read, but not one I would find myself picking up again.
