The Next Mrs. Parrish is set a few years ago the events of The Last Mrs. Parrish. There are plenty of reminders about the events of Last, which I always appreciate in sequels. (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE LAST MRS. PARRISH) Daphne returns with her daughters to Bishops Harbor for the summer after her eldest child attempts to run away to see her father. Jackson has just been released from prison and is determined to put his family back together through whatever means necessary.
The story is told primarily from three perspectives- Daphne, Amber, and Daisy Ann, a new-to-us character who owns a high-end jewelry company.
While I didn’t feel the need for a sequel after reading Last, I did enjoy the story. The pace picks up about a third of the way into the book and after that I couldn’t put it down. The plot wasn’t quite as tight as I would have liked (for example, Amber’s meticulous research is a core personality trait, yet she doesn’t look up the company of the jewelry trunk show she is attending?) but it had plenty of action and quite a few smaller twists that kept me guessing.
I was frustrated with Daphne in this book- she knows what Jackson is capable of, and yet still falls for so many of his tricks. Her perspective was told in first person, in contrast to Amber’s told in third person, and I think for me this added to my perception of Daphne being very naive. The perspectives and points of view changing nearly every chapter was a little jarring as well. I also felt that Daisy Ann’s chapters dragged a bit- we get a lot of insight into her home life and while we do need some to understand her motivations, there was more than we needed and it brought down the pace.
Overall I did enjoy this book- definitely not a five-star thriller, but it held my attention and had a satisfying ending and gives a lot of closure for Daphne.
I've been anxiously awaiting the release of this sequel and was so excited when I was approved for an ARC through the publisher. I'm not sure who is more conniving between Jackson and Amber and this book does not disappoint while each of them try to out whit each other. Truly enjoyed watching Daphne thrive and teach her daughters to be strong and confident. The ending was perfect and closed all the circles and stories that kept me on my toes the whole time!
The Last Mrs. Parrish was on my TBR for forever, so I was really happy when I found out I was able to get a copy of the sequel to push me to read the first one. The first one kept me wanting to know what happened. In my onion in The Last Mrs. Parrish, there was no huge twist like in some thrillers, but in The Next Mrs. Parrish it had a little bit more building to a bigger plot twist. This was a bit more gripping and sucked me in more. I enjoyed the story line (still hate Jackson) and the multiple points of view. I also liked the new character Daisy Ann.
2.5 out of 5
I wasn't the biggest fan of The Last Mrs. Parrish, so I went into this one with pretty low expectations. I ended up being thoroughly surprised. In my opinion, this book lacked the predictability of the first one. I wouldn't say that anything ground breaking occurred or that I was ever truly shocked, but I was just along for the ride and having fun. I think this was a really good conclusion to the storyline that brought everyone some closure.
Having loved the first in the series I have been eagerly awaiting the next Mrs. Parrish release. This book does a good job of refreshing your memory and catching you up since reading the first book years ago. I love that many of the characters continue on from the first while introducing a few new ones.
This was a great read from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book and advance of publication.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine | Bantam for the free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the first book in this series, The Last Mrs Parrish and this sequel does not disappoint! I think you should be able to read this one as a standalone if you choose as the story quickly and efficiently catches you up. I love that the same characters are present and a few of the fringe characters such as Lucy are well developed and used more in this second installment. Plus a new one, Amber's nemesis!
This is such a well written domestic thriller that is twisty, suspenseful, and a real nail biter of a read! There is a complex cat and mouse game that has double crossing between the ladies, all of which is beautifully done. I highly recommend this exciting, domestic, cat and mouse sequel to The Last Mrs. Parrish!
After having read the first in the series years ago, I was excited to see another installment. I was immediately curious to see what the characters were up to now.
While I enjoyed the diabolical madness of Amber, and Jackson, I found myself quite annoyed with some of the other characters. My favorite character was Daisy Ann, in which I will leave it at that to not give away any spoilers.
Also, the title didn't make sense for me, but again not wanting to give any spoilers.
I had some issues with some of the geographical parts of the book that didn't make sense, as well as the stock purchase parts. I know this is fiction, but I wished some of those things were a bit more researched, and realistic.
For fans of the first book, you may really enjoy this one. It fell sort of flat for me, and I continued reading only because it was an ARC.
Overall rating: 2.5
Great thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC!
This newest installment of the Amber, Jackson, and Daphne show was equally as good as the first book and that’s saying a lot because it’s legit the only book I’ve ever read in one day. I think Liv Constantine can write one heck of a villain (or two!) that you just love to hate and you hope for some karmic justice to find its way to them. The fact that it did and in such great ways was highly satisfying and I finished with a happy sigh! Thanks so much for the opportunity to review this own!
It was so fun getting back into the world of the Parrishes. Jackson and Amber are as wicked as ever. I loved watching them try to outmaneuver each other as they pulled Daphne back into their orbit. We also get a look into the backstory of Daphne and Jackson and just how much she suffered during their marriage. Some new characters were introduced in this one and the Constantine duo does a wonderful job folding them into the plot. I highly recommend this one but make sure you start with The Last Mrs. Parrish!
She may have won the battle, but the war is far from done.
Amber Patterson Parrish had always set her sights on living a wealthy, privileged life, and did just about anything to achieve that goal. She maneuvered herself into Daphne Parrish’s life, began an affair with Daphne’s wealthy husband Jackson and got pregnant with his baby. She got what she wanted….Jackson and Daphne divorced, and Jackson married her….only to discover that Jackson was abusive, controlling and pretty much a nightmare to live with. Amber was able to ultimately get some leverage and stabilize the relationship to a degree, but now that her husband is in prison for tax evasion she is working to feather her own nest and skip town with millions of dollars before Jackson is released. Meanwhile, Daphne could not have been happier to escape her abusive husband….she and the two daughters she shared with Jackson, Tallulah and Bella, have moved far out of his orbit, and she never intends to let him near her or them again. It isn’t that simple, though….she has never been completely truthful with the girls as to how bad things were in the marriage, and now Tallulah is acting out and demanding to see her dad. Their therapist suggests that Daphne arrange a controlled visit back to Bishop’s Harbor and, though reluctant, Daphne agrees to take the girls east for the summer. At the same time, Daisy Ann Briscoe is in Dallas, juggling her jewelry business, her marriage, and her grief over the death of her father. She is convinced that the young woman he married just before his death killed him deliberately, though it was ruled a hunting accident, and when she crosses path with that woman back east, she sets out to get revenge. Jackson gets released earlier than expected, and he has his own plans for his wife and his ex-wife. The paths of these four characters intersect, and each will need to be on guard and at the top of their game to survive the collisions.
This novel is the continuation of an earlier story, but it is not necessary to have read the first to quickly get caught up on the players (I hadn’t read it). It is definitely a Lifestyles of the Misbehaving Rich and Famous sort of book, where who you know and what you wear are important, friendships are surface only, and dirty laundry is definitely kept well hidden. Amber is a Nasty Piece of Work, Jackson is a lying sociopath, and Daphne is well rid of the whole scene. Coming back out of compassion for her daughters and thinking she can handle things this time around is Daphne’s equivalent of going into the basement of the spooky house when there’s an ax murderer around. It takes a little while to see how Daisy fits into this mess, but she too is blindsided by people she thinks she can trust. It’s a quick, fun read that bounces around from New York to Texas, Colorado to Missouri, as the reader learns more about who Amber was before she appeared in Bishop’s Harbor and just how twisted Jackson can be. In the face of these manipulative con artists, Daphne and Daisy have their work cut out for them as they try to keep from losing everything and extracting some long overdue justice. More than a couple of twists along the way keep the reader from guessing the ending too quickly, and the plot flows easily along. Not the deepest of character studies here, but that doesn’t detract from the ride. And what a fantastic cover!! Those who read the first book, The Last Mrs. Parrish, will definitely want to check in to see what the characters get up to next, and readers of Rachel Hawkins, Sara Ochs and Hank Philippi Ryan should give this a try as well. Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/Ballantine Bantam for allowing me early access to one of the summers great beach reads
Wow!! I couldn’t put this one down! Completely gripping and absolutely so wonderful! I loved being back with Daphne and the crazy Jackson and Amber! This was so well done!
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC of the Next Mrs. Parrish in exchange for an honest review. This was a fun one!
I’ve been a fan of domestic thrillers and of Liv Constantine for a while now, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen one of them get a sequel. In fact I’m so used to a tidy resolution–the bad guys put away, the unreliable, brave heroine triumphing against all odds–that I was immediately intrigued. What happens next when the messy entanglements are satisfied? What direction do the characters go in, and how would that look? It took me very little time to step back into the world of the Parrishs and find out, and it left me entertained until the last page.
The Next Mrs. Parrish picks up where The Last Mrs. Parrish left off. Following her divorce from Jackson, Daphne Parrish has done her best to start a new life and put the past behind her with her children. Following her marriage to Jackson, Amber Patterson Parrish has found herself delighted by her step into the Bishops Harbor social scene. It’s a life only further convenienced by Jackson’s time in prison, leaving her without much financial oversight. However, Jackson’s release from prison shifts both women's comfortable stability, bringing them back into each other’s orbit. A face from Amber’s past further challenges this precarious arrangement, leading to some surprising twists and turns none of them could possibly plan for.
Where some sequels spin wheels, this one ups the ante, and even hints at a possible third outing. There’s nothing like reading a good thriller/mystery where you never know what will happen next. Unlikely alliances, intricate webs of revenge, and non-stop surprises make The Next Mrs. Parrish a must-read for summer! The characters and relationships only get better the further they are explored, and the ending doesn’t disappoint.
I remember enjoying the first installment of this series but felt this next one was unnecessary. It was nice to see old characters but there was zero growth in the majority of the cast (ie all the villains), so it was not very interesting because there was little character development. It was more of the same.
OMGoodness!! Such a good book! I couldn't not out this one down. All the twists and all the evil deeds! So good!!!
The Next Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine begins with the epigraph: “Love all, trust few, do wrong to none.…” William Shakespeare.
For readers who enjoyed The Last Mrs. Parrish, in this new novel the Parrish wives (Daphne #1, and Amber #2) intersect again, as they parry and feint in their dual quests to outwit and prevail over their sociopathic ex-husband/current husband, Jackson.
Current wife Amber is the master manipulator who has produced a son, little Jax. She enjoys her social status in wealthy enclave, Broken Harbor, but is running out of funds as Jackson is still in prison. Daphne is happy in California, far away from her abusive ex, Jackson, with their daughters Tallulah and Bella, until Jackson sweet talks Tallulah into wanting to get to know her father better. So Daphne reluctantly takes her daughters back to Bishop’s Harbor for the summer.
The third wronged woman in the story is Daisy Ann, daughter of Amber’s first husband, who died under mysterious circumstances. While none of the three women like each other, they are unanimous in their dislike of liars, cheaters, and Jackson Parrish!
The plot lines that follow each female protagonist are well-articulated and come together nicely in the end. The main characters, to me, were all unlikeable, because of amoral behavior or weakness in the face of obvious threats of danger to self or children. The action moves along well enough to keep me engaged to the finish.
It is fun to follow the exploits of characters from the previous novel as they connive or try to survive in the world of Jackson Parrish. The ending of this domestic thriller hints at more to come!
Thank you to Bantam Books and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my unbiased review.
If This author writes it, I'm gonna read it! I am obsessed with Liv Constantine's dark and twisted thrillers! The Last Mrs. Parrish is one of my all time favorite thrillers and one of my go-to recommendations. I was so thrilled to see that there would be a sequel. I definitely recommend reading The Last Mrs. Parrish first because starting with this would reveal some of the plot twists in the first book. However, it has been years since I read the first book and there was some good information to refresh my brain at the start of this.
This book also focuses on Amber and Daphne (the last and current Mrs. Parrishes) Amber is social climbing and manipulative. She and her husband have a son together. Daphne left town with her daughters and swore she'd never come back. However, her daughters miss their father very much. Daphne agrees to a trip back for them. Also entering the mix is a new character named Daisy Ann. who is looking for revenge. It was very interesting to see how all of the stories tied together.
I enjoyed this book so much! It was fast paced, suspenseful, and full of plot twists! Everyone has secrets and nothing is what it seems. What a wild ride! I can't wait to see what this author releases next! The story seems to end with a possible book three, so I'd be really excited for that!
This is sequel to Last Mrs Parrish. The story continues where we left off. I am usually wary of sequels…and was sure this was not going to be not as good. But this turned out to be great!
I could NOT put this book down! I truly ADDICTIVE, page-turner!
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! Awesome TWISTS and the ending was justice served on a platter!
This was even better than 'The Last Mrs. Parrish! HIGHLY recommend as the perfect summer read.
In this highly anticipated sequel to The Last Mrs. Parrish, Daphne is living in California, far away from the nightmare she was forced to live in Connecticut while married to Jackson Parrish. But Daphne is raising two preteen girls who want to be able to spend time with their father. Meanwhile, Amber Parrish is happily running the show in CT while Jackson is finishing his prison sentence for tax evasion, until she checks the bank account and realizes that the money is running out. Amber, the greedy gold digger that she is, will stop at nothing to get all of Jackson’s money- and then some. But when someone from Amber’s past comes into the picture, things get a lot more complicated for her than she anticipated.
This book is a wild ride full of manipulation, lies, backstabbing. It seems as though everyone is deceiving one another and it’s impossible to know who you can trust, all the way to the very last page. This book was definitely bingeable and will be the perfect summer poolside read: bad, rich people doing bad, rich people things. Everyone is trying to have the upper hand throughout the story and I couldn’t wait to find out who would come out on top.
Daisy Ann was a great addition to our already insanely wild cast of characters from the first book in this series. Throughout the story, the authors really do a great job of making the reader feel very strongly about the main characters- I especially felt disgust toward Jackson and Amber. I feel like the authors do a great job bringing these characters to life and making you understand their outrageous feelings and motivations. For example, how Amber perceives Daisy Ann as a villain… Daisy Ann is just a victim, right? The only thing I like about Amber is her love for her office library.
Cons:
-I noticed inconsistencies with points of view, switching from first person to third person.
-Especially in the “Amber” chapters, I found a lot of repetitiveness from chapter to chapter. I lost track of how many times she mentions having the gems stashed away in case of an emergency and how mad Jackson would be if she were to take his son away from him. I felt like it was pretty redundant to keep bringing up these two things in successive chapters.
-It seems that our main characters are traveling throughout the country constantly, it was hard to keep track of who was where at times. They’re all rich and able to just bop around from one part of the country to another, a lifestyle I am clearly not accustomed to!
Thank you so much to Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for my eARC of this book in exchange for my review.
My review has been posted to GoodReads. On pub day, it will be posted to my Instagram (@thisisjusttheprologue_) and Amazon, as well.
Somehow I missed that this was a sequel. Don't worry. They cover the entire first book. What you have is a trio of women who are all trying to ruin one or both of the other for a variety of reasons. All of those reasons revolve around the men in their lives. It was very much like reading an 80s night time soap. It was satisfying at times.
