I'm enjoying this series so much!
Corpse in the Closet has all the humor, wit and sexy fun as the first one with a bit more murder! Riley gets recruited to assist the PD on a serial killer case while Nick is on a missing persons case. Nick is definitely not playing the part of cheerleader for Riley to run off into danger again but he is keeping his panicky anxious feelings to himself...and adding a bit of tracking bugs to Riley's phone and car. Riley's grandmother is also in town demanding Riley focus on honing her psychic abilities, the woman is god awful! The bodies start piling up while the glitter bombs explode, Riley and Nick face down another intense situation in this sequel.
I really adored how quickly Nick has fallen for Riley, moving himself in with no hesitation, knowing he doesn't want to be without her for even a second. I know this is like bare minimum stuff here but after he was portrayed as such a commitment phobe it was really cute to see him go all gaga. I felt so bad for Riley...she's really caught between worlds right now. If she really exposes herself as a psychic her dream of normalcy will be out the window...and if she does want to be a psychic her drill sergeant of a grandmother demands she hone it. Decisions decisions.
All of our beloved secondary characters have returned as well and it was lovely to see Gabe and Wander's relationship get a little bit more attention but don't get your hopes too high we are very much still in slow burn territory. We also get to see Griffin suffer a lot more at the end was vindicating and we are left with quite the reveal by Riley's Grandmother in regards to Webber's sister Beth who has been missing the last 6 years.
The audio of this series is also really good. Natalie Duke does a wonderful narration and does a great job with all of the secondary character voices. I just adore her Gabe voice, it makes me think of him like a huge serene angel like being (is he an angel?! Definitely not human I think lol).
Overall a great sequel to this fun series, I am definitely going to continue it! Thank you so much to Bloom Books for gifting me this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
In this sequel kooky psychic Riley Thorne and her near perfect grumpy boyfriend Nick Santiago are full shenanigans again. Another mystery to solve with an extensive cast of colorful characters, Lucy Score produces another fun book with a nice mix of romance and mystery in a series that slides a little but further into slapstick territory but is still a delight to read.
This one took me a while to finish. I started reading it and enjoyed the writing (like I always do with Lucy Score books!) but I kept feeling like I was severely missing something. And I was. I was missing the first book in the series 🤦🏼♀️. I was missing the entire backstory of the relationship. That being said definitely read that one first, then come back to this. It was cute, the banter was fun, Lucy Score writes with wit and her books are never a miss.
This was a light hearted continuation of the Riley Thorn series. I really enjoyed how Score was able to balance continuing the plot with these characters in contrast over new plot points and a new mystery to solve.
This was an excellent book!! I enjoyed the character development as well as how the plot was developed throughout the story. The author was able to to do a good job with all aspects of the story. I would recommend to others.
This is a Negative Review
Thank you to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books | Bloom Books for an ARC
I usually LOVE a Lucy Score Book but.... this one was defeating for me I couldn't get past the first 20% no matter how many times I tried.. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't connecting with me. . Sometimes, things don't work out—right Book wrong time perhaps. Therefore I will not be posting this review to any other platforms.
Lucy score always knows how to captivate a reader with her witty, humorous characters. I enjoyed this read and I’ve jumped into the next book right away!
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Corpse in the Closet is the second book within the Riley Thorn series. Just like the first one, I really enjoyed seeing Riley, Nick, and the gang figure out multiple mysteries. On top of that, we get Riley's scary grandmother, who is so freaking hard to please. I didn't like her for most of this book, but I am happy that she is leaving. Unless she magically shows back up in the next book.
As for the mystery, it took me forever to figure out who was behind the glitter bombs. I'll admit that I was definitely surprised with the reveal because I just didn't see that person doing it. I mean, now I totally did, but during? No.
Other than that, I'm enjoying the romance side of Nick and Riley. Sure, the communication could use a little more work, but they are still going strong. I do hope that his mother somehow comes around to liking Riley. I'm also not surprised that Nick put an offer on that dump they call a house. I could totally see the vision behind his drunken explanation, but I have a feeling people are still going to show up unnanounced and cockblock him.
In the end, I'm glad that I got the first two books from NetGalley and can't wait to jump into the next book in the new year.
This was a short, fun read! Will absolutely read more from this author. Mystery & romance will always be a good time!
The Corpse in the Closet is a delightful addition to Lucy Score’s repertoire, perfect for fans of romantic comedies with a suspenseful edge. It’s a fun, fast-paced read that will leave you eager for more adventures (and misadventures) with these unforgettable characters.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Riley is the queen of snark in this hilarious novel.
I loved this one just as much as Lucy Score’s other works. This book is random, and full of fun and whimsy. The writing truly shines with the character development. Riley and Nick navigate a complicated relationship as tensions rise and fall.
This books plot was great, and exactly what I expect from this author. This book does suffer a little in terms of pacing but that was something I was able to overlook myself.
I didn’t really enjoy this book. I found it a bit weird and boring, but I’m sure others might like it. Sorry if that’s not what you were hoping for!
After reading the first of this series, I had to immediately request the rest of the series. Officially one of my favs now. It’s comedy gold with just the right amount of mystery and spice. So cute.
I have usually loved Lucy Score's books, but I'm sad to say this series was a miss. I had a hard time connecting or caring about these characters. It also felt like these books were longer than they needed to be. I'm disappointed because I wanted to love this series, too. I bet others will enjoy this series.
Set in the heat of summer, this latest installment in the Riley Thorn series throws together a reluctant psychic, her handsome PI boyfriend, and a string of escalating murders, creating a page-turner that’s as entertaining as it is chaotic.
Riley Thorn, a reluctant psychic with a penchant for stumbling into danger, is back—and she’s as snarky and skeptical of her powers as ever. Her summer starts off on a rocky note when her disapproving grandmother arrives to lay down the law about Riley’s abilities and the expectations of "the Guild" (a group of psychic practitioners that seem more ominous than helpful). Things only get more complicated when Riley is pulled into yet another murder investigation, this time involving a well-dressed corpse found in a walk-in closet.
Adding to the mayhem is Riley’s boyfriend, Nick Santiago, a private investigator with his own set of problems: a missing person case, strained family dynamics, and residual worry over Riley’s near-death experience from earlier in the year. The couple’s dynamic—full of chemistry, humor, and a fair amount of tension—keeps the romance plot alive throughout the book, even as it takes a backseat to the mystery.
The mystery itself, with its string of murders and mounting body count, is entertaining enough to keep readers engaged, though it doesn't quite reach the level of intricate plotting seen in some other cozy mysteries. The killer’s identity is a bit predictable, and the suspense comes more from the chaos Riley finds herself in than from the mystery’s true complexity. That being said, Score excels in crafting a highly entertaining, if slightly over-the-top, series of events that make for a light, breezy read.
What really stands out in The Corpse in the Closet is Score’s humor. Riley’s snarky inner dialogue and the bizarre, often absurd situations she finds herself in—like an elderly roommate dressing up as a mime—give the book a whimsical, fun vibe that keeps things from getting too heavy. The addition of Riley’s ex-husband (now a spray-tanned news anchor) and his new weather girl fiancée adds an extra layer of comedy and drama that will make readers smile, even as Riley is put in increasingly ridiculous situations.
The character development between Riley and Nick is a highlight, especially as they navigate their somewhat complicated relationship. Nick’s protective instincts are endearing, but also add a bit of tension between the couple as Riley insists on continuing her involvement in dangerous investigations despite Nick’s concerns. Their banter is often the highlight of the book, though their relationship doesn’t undergo as much growth as it could have, given the stakes.
Where the book falters a bit is in pacing. While the mystery moves forward at a steady clip, there are sections where the book lingers a little too long on subplots that don't fully contribute to the main narrative. The family drama involving Nick’s parents, for example, feels like a diversion that doesn't add much to the overall plot. Likewise, the mystery itself, while fun, sometimes takes a backseat to the quirky side stories, which could be a bit distracting for readers looking for a more focused investigation.
That being said, The Corpse in the Closet still offers a delightful mix of humor, romance, and light suspense. It's not the most tightly plotted or emotionally deep book in the genre, but it's an enjoyable romp with characters you’ll want to spend time with, especially if you’re already invested in Riley and Nick’s relationship. If you're looking for a lighthearted mystery with a bit of supernatural flair and plenty of laughs, this book will scratch that itch nicely.
Hilarious. The next book can’t come soon enough. If you need an escape from reality and want awesome banter, fantastic humor, fun mysteries, and a quirky but loveable cast of characters, then this is the book for you. I laughed myself silly while loving the crazy chaos that unfolded
Lucy Score is a Diabolical Genius!!
Let's get that declaration that out of the way.
she REALLY is a possessor of literary wizardry. I picture her with her unwashed writer hair standing on end, in standard author uniform of PJs & stained tee, hungry and stressed out, pumping her fingers on keyboard or her frustrated head in her hands.
But what a plethora of facetious words that she has bound in a book. Made me hoot..no howl with laughter most of the time and shaking my head at some.
Fantastic. Extraordinarily Ingenius writing with uncanny precision of humour.
Lucy could TEACH a whole semester on writing Rom-com and I'd pay authors to go join and learn this exquisite art that Lucy does so effortlessly.
Did I say Lucy Score is a Diabolical Genius!!
This book starts as a next in misadventures of a hot dimpled cop and a cooky psychic, both of whom stole my heart.
But wait for it. The ENTIRE side cast of characters, Esp Mrs Penny and Gabe are fantastic too. And the Fred's and Mr Willicot and Blossom and Jasmine and Eleanora had me in stitches.
And there's a dog who eats human food and farts and a spite cow that jumps fences and glitter poops in the angriest neighbours yard.
“You stupid walking hamburger! I’m going to shoot you between the eyes and turn you into a roast!” the woman howled.
This edition of their escapade involves a serial killer and glitter-bombs.
Hidden behind the words is the gruesome truth of social evils of the present times.
The Karens. The keyboard warriors. The pissed off entitled snobs. The bullies who demean people.
The dregs of the Internet-landia and the rabbit hole that is Instagram Influencer-ship.
This diverse bracket of self-appointed moral police are now being hunted by the victim named Karma.
Is it just- No!
Is it reverse victimisation- yes!
Would I recommend it in real life - Also NO!!
But reading about it... Hell YEAH!!
Booyah and Atta girl Lucy. Way to highlight the Angry mob mentality in your signature droll and whimsical style..I had so much fun reading it.
I'm now going to read ALL YOUR BOOKS and pm you and nag you and tackle-hug you in Philly!!
I'll be the girl with glitter...Jk...or am I?😈

I love Lucy Score and Riley Thorn is such a lovable, relatable (well, in some ways…can’t relate to the psychic part 😉) character. I was excited to continue this series and see where Riley ends up this time. This book had me laughing out loud and staying up late to read.
