Oh my life. My goodness gracious. Holy McMoley with a cherry on top, what a book! (True, I listened on audiobook, but that added to the experience of this phenomenal novel!)
The Patient, written by Teri Terry and narrated by Sarah Durham is absolutely incredible. Stellar performance on both counts, from the author for writing such a blinding book and to Sarah Durham for her vocal performance which was pure perfection. The emotes, accents, characters and emhasis were so on point I had to remember to breathe
The book opens with a narrative from Flora's subconscious/ spectral mind, confusion, hearing voices, scared. We learn that she has been brutally strangled by someone she thought she could trust, and her family need to make the ultimate sacrifice, and turn off the life support, donating her organs so that others may live on.
Saffie is dying. She has a congenital heart condition that took her father at a young age and is coming for her. Saffie is given Flora's heart and she is given a new lease of life, yet, she cannot stop thinking about the donor who gave her this chance
Saffie discovers who her donor is and starts to research every little thing about flora's life, and death. However, when the family make contact, offer her some of Flora's things, the uncertainty rows, especially when another organ recipient is attacked. Will this second chance at life be torn away before it has truly begun?
This psychological thriller is utterly blinding, a real belter of a ride and I could not press pause, I had to keep listening, my own heart racing. The dialogue, the narrative, the pace, sheer perfection! I will certainly be looking fr more books by this phenomenal author
Thankyou very, very much to Netgalley, Bookouture audio, Terry Teri and Sarah Durham for this incredible experience, this stunning ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
Couldn't put it down!
Can't wait to listen to more books by TT, a new author to me.
Great narration, well paced, exciting book, bit twisty with an ending that I didn't see coming.
I want to thank the author, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio
for the opportunity to listen to this terrific new book.
Saphy has received a new heart, from Flora, who was in a coma after nearly being murdered.
Whilst taking her time to recover and adjust to her new lease of life, Saphy becomes interested, and maybe a bit too obsessed, with where and who her heart came from. Once Flora's family agree to meet with Saphy, she wonders if she can worm her way into their family further - which shouldn't be too difficult as Flora's family feel like Flora is back in their lives.
Things take a turn when 2 of Flora's other organ recipients are attacked leaving Saphy scared that she is next.
A bit of a slow start for a thriller, but once the story picked up pace, I needed to finish it to find out if my theory was correct.
I did feel like giving up a couple times before the twists started coming, I'm glad I kept with it.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+⭐
The Patient by Teri Terry, an audiobook narrated by Sarah Durham is different and an absolutely gripping and addictive psychological thriller! I loved the storyline as it was so different! And the twist!!! Seriously! I froze! I scared my family as I stared straight and gasped out loud - OMG! They thought something happened :D The twist... seriously made my jaw drop!
Ok, I am breathing now... but you know, OMG! OMG! OMG!
"I gasp in shock!" is a quote from the book and it's so true! I still can't get my head around what's happening in this book!
Sophie is one of the lucky ones, she got the perfect match for her heart transplantation. She got her second chance. All she wanted was to know the girl whose heart she is having... She never thought this would be the end...
Seriously, the end of this book was insane!
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this copy! It's so much a must read/listen book!
Saphy desperately needs a heart transplant. Meanwhile, in another hospital lies Flora. She was strangled and left for dead. Now it's just the machines keeping her alive. As her family makes the brave decision to donate her organs, Saphy finds her life about to change.
On recovering from her transplant it doesn't take Saphy long to realise the celebrity girl was her donor and she becomes fascinated by her life. So when her donors family reaches out to meet her she jumps at the chance to see if her thoughts are true.
It's not long till she's being embraced by Flora family. Then the topic of living donors makes for news and she stands up with the family. Especially when the person suspected of the crime comes up with a new defence.
But what really happened to Flora and are more people at risk...…
I totally loved this book. A really quick paced book that you didn't want to end.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to listen to a ARC
The patient is an excellent short trapped inside of a novel. The summary sounded interesting. A young woman received a heart from a donor who was killed but then others who got organs from this donor were attacked.
Saphy has a congenital heart defect that worsened after she had Covid. Flora is a young woman who was attacked and is in a coma. The media referred to Flora as "sleeping beauty". Flora did not make it but her organs were healthy enough to be donated. Saphy receives Flora's heart.
Saphy has an obsession with Flora and she starts to act, dress, and even drink what Flora would. Is this her heart making her do these things or is it her obsession with Flora? I liked this subplot but it was resolved with a small throwaway sentence in the book's conclusion.
As for someone coming after the people who received Flora's organs, this was a twist I was not expecting. This was well done and very interesting. My problem is this book was 75% about almost nothing of importance and then the final quarter was a great suspenseful thriller. This is why I say this is a great short story trapped in a novel. I do recommend it because the final few chapters are truly great, I just wish it did more on its journey to the finish
I was initially drawn to this audiobook by its captivating cover, and I'm glad I decided to give it a listen. While the story started off a bit slow, the intricate development of each character's role proved to be crucial to the impactful conclusion. Around the 70% mark, the pace picked up significantly, keeping me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Teri Terry masterfully delves into the perspectives of both organ donors and recipients, shedding light on the profound complexities of organ donation. The narrative left me hoping for a movie adaptation to bring its compelling storyline to the screen. The writing was skillful and engaging, making it a highly enjoyable listen. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to fellow avid readers, as well as friends and family. Moreover, the empowering message conveyed towards the end, particularly the ode to women and girls, resonated deeply with me. I extend my gratitude to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was an excellent thriller. I was sure I had it figured out multiple times. I kept thinking, surely it can't be that guessable, well it wasn't. This was a wild ride with relatable characters. Dig in!
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to listen to this book.
This was a 3.5 stars for me. The plot and storyline were intriguing and well developed. Teri Terry did a great job at character development, painting a full picture, and dropping subtle hints. This would have been a 4/4.5 for me, but it was too slow of a burn for me. I did appreciate the quick chapters, but I didn't get invested until about 80% into the story. I enjoyed the twist at the end and didn't even get close to guessing any of it.
The premise for this book was amazing. A dead woman's organs are donated but then everyone who receives one of her body parts begins getting murdered. Saphy knows it's a matter of time before she is targeted....after all, she got a new heart.
I wanted to love this one but ultimately I think it just moved too slow for me. I prefer my thrillers more fast paced and this one seemed to drag in most parts at the start. Things started to happen around the 75% mark though and the ending was commendable with a twist I didn't see coming.
Probably closer to 3.5⭐️ for me. The first 70% or so was more domestic drama, building up the background of Saphy and her need for her heart transplant, as well as getting to know her donor’s family. I don’t normally like a slow burn but found myself wanting to continue to listen to find out what was going to happen. It really picked up the last 20-30%, lots of twists and action. It felt a little rushed, it was a lot happening at once. Overall this was a solid thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
This thriller was a terrifying reflection on what it could mean to be an organ donor and then actually get attacked but being aware when your organs are harvested. The recipient of the new organ then hesitates between meeting their donor's family and friends and finally deciding they're too curious not to. Loved the believable characters, the brief ethical exploration of this topic, but most of all, the twists and turns in the story as what happened slowly comes to light. If you like twisty thrillers that don't get too gory, this one's for you.
Book Title: The Patient
Author: Teri Terry
Narrator: Sarah Durham
Publisher: Bookouture Audio
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: February 13, 2024
My Rating: 3.4 Stars
Pages: 335
Story is told from the POV of ~
Saphy who has received a new heart and
Fern the sister of Flora the donor
Saphy was born with a non-operable congenital heart defect. Now as an adult has been on the list for a heart transplant and receives word there is a match.
Flora was attacked and left in a coma, believed dead however is able to hear everyone in the room but her voice cannot be heard.
There are suspicions that Flora died on purpose for the purpose of harvesting her organs for patients waiting for a transplant.
Benjamin (Benjie) Lawrence has been charged with Flora’s death. However was released on bail as many believe that she actually died due to her organs being removed before she was dead.
First part of the book is a slow burn as it is background information on the transplant. /
Soon, Flora’s sister becomes close to Saphy and Saphy with the rest of the family.
Additionally Saphy takes on some of Flora’s characteristics. – such as the color yellow. Saphy never liked yellow. There are many things that make readers get the situation serious thought w
I was attracted to this story as I had corneal transplants in both eyes – not at the same time so different donors. At that time the donor’s names were never revealed. If you wanted to thank the family or any other communication it was done via an agency to keep confidentiality.
Another thing that interested me is that Saphy was adopted and both my daughters are adopted.
Story really started to drag for me. I even disliked Sarah Durham the audiobook narrator - I normally enjoy her performance but this time it was difficult to hear the difference between Saphy and Fern.
I hung in there and yes the big reveal was a surprise- I had some suspicions but certainly did not have all the details.
. I am giving this 3.4 Stars as it was better than good however it wasn’t 4 star=great,
.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this early Audiobook.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for February 13, 2024.
This was my first book by this author. I thought the premise was something that I have never read before. I feel like I always say it but with the amount of thrillers I read it is really hard to find new and different things in them. This one had it. Unfortunately for me it kind of fell flat of what I was wanting from it. I felt like a lot of things were repeating itself. It kind of got annoying by the end of it. I did like the different perspectives of the book though. Overall I don't think it was bad but it also didn't blow me away.
5/5 Stars! Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the audiobook of The Patient by Teri Terry narrated by Sarah Durham.
This is my first book by this author and this book did not disappoint! It was slow at first but I can hear and connect the buildup towards the end. The plot was very twisted and the ending was fantastically done and all the clues tied up. The narrator did a great job, but I felt like it was read very slowly - I had to speed up the story to 2x and there was also too long of a gap between each chapter (I thought that I might've closed out on the app/book several times).
Overal, the ending definitely got me and I will be reading/checking out other novels by this author. She's got a new fan!
Thank you for granting me early access to this audiobook and a special thank you to the narrator. What a performance. I loved it so much. Started off slowly, but wow that ending!
I would give this a 3.5,
This book was definitely a slow slow burn.
The main character, Saphy just seemed obsessed with her heart donor. She really just wanted to take over Flora’s life and family.
Now, once you get to the 78% mark, that’s when the thrill comes into play. The background, the plot twist the explanations.. IT GETS REAL.
For the last 22% of the book, my mouth was agape. Every time I thought the worse had come out… it got even worse!! The plot twist and ending was spectacular. It reminded me of the movie Gothika.
I’m glad I decided to listen to it all the way through and not quit, the more I waited for the “thriller” and “suspense” part of the plot.
I volunteered to read listen to the audiobook ARC through NetGalley.
You need to be patient listening to The Patient, but it pays off in a big way. There are so many strands to the story it takes a while to lay them all out, but once you begin to see where they overlap and knit together you can feel the tension building and will become impatient to get to the end. Excellent.
The Patient is one of my top reads of 2024. It follows the story of Flora, a popular "it girl" who is the victim of a brutal attack that leaves her in a coma. When her family decides to donate her organs, things take an unexpected turn when they become invested in Saphy, the heart recipient.
At first, I found the book uninteresting and all the characters unlikeable, but decided to keep going. And I'm glad I did! I listened to The Patient in one sitting and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
While the main twist was predictable, I never saw the others coming and they caught me off guard.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the free audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
After dealing with a heart defect and then becoming ill, Saphy is now the recipient of a new heart. While in recovery, although feeling better, Saphy becomes curious about her donor Flora.
Soon after meeting, Saphy feels as though she could become a part of Flora's family. Saphy and Flora's sister relationship blooms. Together they realize things just get more weird.
Weird things start to happen with other recipients of Flora’s organs, but who is behind all of this? Who has murdered Flora and why?
This story got interesting about 70% of the way in. We then quickly start to get answers to some of the burning questions. The twists were subtle but were very good. I really liked the ending of this!
