Shark attack!
...but no, "Sharks! Sharks! Sharks!" is not about shark attacks; rather, it's about the diversity of sharks, and how their bodies are built, and why they're fascinating creatures. I find sharks kind of terrifying (in the same category as zombies—dead behind the eyes, cannot be reasoned with), but I love the enthusiasm with which sharks are approached here, and the fact that the book calls out some misconceptions about sharks. (They don't generally want to attack humans—most shark "attacks" are really a shark trying to figure out if a human is food.) There's a wide, wide variety of sharks under discussion here, and my favorite is definitely the Greenland shark, which I'd never heard of—did you know that a Greenland shark is estimated to live hundreds of years, and they don't procreate until they're 150 or so? (And—this per Wikipedia—when they *do* procreate, the gestational period is 8–18 years long? Jeepers creepers.)
This is not the sort of children's book with a lot of story or plot, and it's probably best suited to more advanced readers who have recently come home with a lot of questions about sharks, or about the ocean in general. But if you have one of those kids in your life...? This is definitely a book for them.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
I could easily plan a whole shark mini-unit around this book. My second grade students would be THRILLED to spend a few weeks learning about sharks. The images in the book are helpful for students to be able to have a frame of reference for what the author is talking about. Great book!
I LOVE THIS BOOK! The illustrations are out of this world adorable. I am very passionate about sharks and why we need to protect them, but I used to be really scared of them and then I learned and educated myself about them and now I love them and this book is perfect for teaching them young!!
This is a very cute book about everything sharks. Catering to younger kids (ages 6 and up) the book is full of fun facts about sharks and lots of cute, engaging pictures. I especially loved the shark vocabulary at the end.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
Are you a shark fan? Do you enjoy learning about different sharks? Did you know that the Greenland Shark can live hundreds of years and doesn't even give birth until it is 150 years old? I never knew some of these sharks existed until reading about them in the book. Susan Martineau did a wonderful job writing this book about sharks. She has shared a lot of facts and kept it very interesting.
This book is created for children, however, adults who love sharks would enjoy reading this book. Vicky Barker did an amazing job with the illustrations, they hold a lot of details which is perfect for children!
I loved this book! It had so many interesting facts that I didn't know about sharks already. I am obsessed with Sharks.
My son (5) and I read this together and he absolutely loved it. The colors, the facts, everything was so perfectly geared towards his interests and he was so engaged and asking so many questions.
Wow! Me and my son read this and he was obsessed with every page. He loved every moment and even helped name al the sharks in the book. We have downloaded the dinosaur one to read tomorrow which we are so excited for.
The book had just the right amount of information to keep it educational but also interesting and kids engaged, the pictures of the sharks were so good and kept us wanting more.
Can’t wait to read the dinosaur one with my son, also more from this author!
Like a very similar (and very similarly successful) sister volume concerning dinosaurs (I'll leave it to you to work the title out), this fits into a crowded market but must be said to do it with distinction. Neither a "my first" book about sharks nor something more serious, ie it still gives some of the beasts speech bubbles, we get a fair bit of science and examples of the species here. How they deliver babies, how they breathe and eat, how the huge ones are perfectly docile and how very few of them will ever attack us – this ends with a look at how they're kept at risk, hence the demand we retain our interest in them. In that regard this will do no harm whatsoever – a strong four stars.
A fun book filled with all the shark facts you could ever want to know, plus some! A great option for a shark lover in your life.
This is a great children’s book to teach children all about sharks. What they are, the different types and the amazingly cool things they can all do! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest feedback!
Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! is well-illustrated picture book that tells you everything you want to know about sharks! The big ones. The small ones. The odd ones. The well-known ones. The illustrations are very well done. Words that might be too difficult for your child are explained well in the text, with the illustrations or the vocabulary list at the end of the book.
I really liked the illustrations and all the facts about sharks, I think is a really cute book, and good for kids because it presents all the information in a friendly and fun way.
This children's book is full of engaging shark facts and gorgeous illustrations! My kids are going to really enjoy this one! Perfect for all your little shark enthusiasts. Thank you for the ARC!
Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! by Susan Martineau is an enjoyable fact-filled picture book for any child interested in sharks. While there is a lot of information between the pages, Martineau breaks it down into bite-sized pieces that are easy for readers to digest. As a mother of a three year old, reading everything on each page would get overwhelming to my little one. With how the text is broken up on the page, we’re able to select a couple of different bits of information off each page each time we read it. However, a more advanced reader would be able to consume more information through their reading and work up their reading stamina, making it a fantastic book for different leveled readers and pre-readers.
Among the pages and beautiful and clean illustrations of sharks and other sea life is a plethora of information ranging from different species of sharks, their anatomy, habitats, and social behaviors to name just a few. One of my personal favorite pages was one that dispelled the myth that sharks are evil, human-eating monsters and explains how humans are often just mistaken as sharks’ natural prey. This explanation goes along with illustrations and diagrams that help young readers see just how similar humans look to seals in the water. Each page has at least a couple of text features that allow this book to also be used as a great mentor text for nonfiction units.
Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! is a must-have book for any nonfiction collection for children preschool through middle school. Readers will be able to enjoy and learn from the illustrations and grow with the book as they learn to read and extend their stamina.
It is an engaging, fun, and delightful book that is big on facts. It teaches kids all they need to know about sharks, encouraging them to feed their scientific interests. It’s an educative, fun, and engaging book.
Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! is a book that is sure to delight young shark enthusiasts! My youngest daughter is a shark lover and this book would be perfect for her. I love that it begins with some general information about sharks and some science behind the parts of the body and then moves into facts about specific types of sharks. This book covers MANY types of sharks, so young readers are sure to see at least one of their favorites on these pages. Additionally, this book shares information that dispels some common myths about sharks and informs readers about other unique and interesting facts about sharks.
This book would be a great addition to any library and will be very popular with early elementary readers.
Thank you net galley for this book. This book was very descriptive and had great illustrations.I learned things about sharks that I did not know.I did not know some sharks let their babies grow up in nurseries. All sharks are not out to eat us but other creatures .This would be a great science lesson for children. The glossary at the back was very informative.
Thank you so much for the advanced copy of Sharks! Sharks! Sharks! This nonfiction read will be perfect for students that are interested in ocean life and sharks. I learned quite a bit about sharks that I did not know just from reading this book! Glow in the dark sharks?! So cool! From a reading teacher perspective, I love the text features of the table of contents and the special shark words at the end of the book. The illustrations with labels were really well done. I will definitely be adding this to my classroom library and requesting our librarian to order it as well!
Even as an adult, I learned a lot with this book. The illustrations are lovely, and it's long enough for even older children. I loved this, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short read or for all kiddos
