The book itself is a very difficult book to read as the content is extremely disturbing and heartbreaking. I think, however, it should be required reading for those of us living in areas that have never experienced something like this. I think it will help all of us to feel much more empathy and understanding towards refugees and will hopefully compel us to take action to help.

I did enjoy the book club kit for this book and especially liked the interview with the author. I am going to make sure I watch the documentary soon. I have made a donation to one of the organizations mentioned.

I will never look at Syria or her people the same way.

It was very interesting how they talked about the author and after he read the book. The questions from the book club. I think this is really good because you can read the book. But they have questions to get really understanding the book even more. This is showing a woman can be very strong in the syria to become a doctor

What a good idea. If you have a book club, NetGalley offers a series of 21 (so far) book club kits by "We Are Bookish." The kit includes author interviews, recipes, questions, movie links (if a movie has been made of the book), and more.
It's a feast of background that makes reading more enjoyable. It offers a book group discussion points and suggests how to contribute to causes championed by the author/s.

Worth picking up if you're starting a book club, if your group is stumped or deteriorating into gossip, or if you just want more information about a great book you're reading.

The description of this book begins with: "This searing memoir tells the story of a young doctor and activist who ran an underground hospital in Damascus, humanizing the enduring crisis in Syria." Sounds like it's worth your time, doesn't it?

This is a great book club kit! It's very thorough and includes so many things for a book club and I hope I get to use it at my library in the future! Not only are there discussion questions, but also included are an interview with the authors, printable bookmarks, food and drink ideas that are enjoyed in Syria, info about a documentary that was made about the cave and ideas of what to read next. All in all, this is a great resource!

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

Publication date: 12 February 2024

The Underground Hospital" by Dr. Amani Ballour
Dr. Amani Ballour's memoir, "The Underground Hospital," is a powerful and inspiring account of bravery amidst the chaos of war. Ballour's unique perspective as the only woman to run a wartime hospital in Syria brings a deeply personal and humanizing lens to the Syrian crisis. Her story is one of relentless courage, challenging patriarchal norms, and unwavering dedication to saving lives. From the harrowing sarin attacks to the daily struggles of emergency medicine, Ballour's narrative is both heartbreaking and uplifting. This memoir stands as a tribute to her indomitable spirit and a beacon of hope and resilience for those facing unimaginable odds.

This is an amazing resource, thank you for sharing it with me. I can't wait to use it while reading and sharing with my students.

I was given this opportunity through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Fantastic kit for use in book club meetings. We struggle with discussing the book (we usually say a few worked about it and then start chatting about anything in general) and this will help us to stay on track.

Short and sweet guide. It includes questions, interviews, some recipes (food and drink), and a "read next" list. The portion that discusses how to get involved was a nice addition.

I'm a sucker for a good discussion question, so I always try to pick up the NetGalley book club kits for books I've read. (Was "The Cave" on my to-read list anyway? Yes. Did I read it sooner than I might have otherwise because I knew I'd get bonus discussion questions...? I'll never tell.)

This book club kit features an author interview, discussion questions, printable bookmarks, and recipes for Syrian food and drinks to try—plus some questions related to the documentary that preceded this book (I have yet to watch it, but I prefer documentaries to Hollywood, so...I might have to), tips for taking action, and further reading. I think this is one where I might have preferred an interview with someone else (no insult to Dr. Ballour, who is eloquent and on point—just that the interview questions are largely asking about things that are already in the book), but there's plenty of fodder for thinking and for discussion.

A solid resource to accompany a valuable book.

This is a well crafted book club kit to help readers discuss The Cave.
I truly was captivated by the story and the extreme hardships the victims of this senseless conflict had to endure plus the efforts to save lives by the doctors of The Cave.

This feels like a very timely book considering the genocide happening in Gaza and the effect that it is having on neighboring countries like Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt. This book club kit is an excellent guide for my friends and I.

This was a great book guide! It was informative, engaging, and would be great for book clubs. The interviews & recipes were particularly unique, and are a nice touch along with the book itself.

This is a great way for book clubs and/or book get-togethers to decide and later discuss a book. I think everyone can pull alittle something if not more through Book Club Kits.
