Very cool way to make a cookbook about baking bread!
I learned a lot and really loved the artwork in it.
However, sometimes things were a bit difficult. So I think for breadbaking beginners, this might be a bit too much info at once.
I received a galley of this book via NetGalley.
Straight up: I want to buy this book. I’ve read many baking books that discuss how to cultivate and utilize sourdough starters, and this is the least intimidating, most friendly of the lot. Every recipe is fully illustrated with detailed instructions led by avatars of baker Ken Forkish and comic book artist Sarah Becan. The one downside is that the book doesn’t include many recipes, but several variations are included. Really, this book provides an accessible foundation to perfect sourdough techniques and innovate from there.
Really fun way to learn a new trait.
Ken Forkish simply explains how to make bread while Sarah Becan uses her very helpful artistic abilities to share what each technic looks like.
Very much enjoyed this. Will be making some of these breads soon.
Thanks to NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for the ARC of this book.
An absolutely adorable and helpful guide not only for those new to baking yeast and sourdough breads but for experts at it looking to add a truly unique recipe/how to book to their kitchen library.
I loved it not only because of the comic book style (which is admittedly my favorite part) but because it also inspired me to get back into bread baking after an impromptu hiatus. Can't wait to add this physically to my collection after getting to read my eARC.
The comic book about baking bread that you never knew you needed, and are going to love. Seriously, this is one of those ideas that turns out to be brilliant, because it's not only fun, it's actually extremely useful. I know a bit about baking breads and there will still a lot of useful stuff in here for my reference. I can only imagine how great this would be for someone who is new to bread-baking. Best of all, because it's a graphic novel, it's about as non-intimidating as you can get. And you can see exactly what is happening Every Single Step Of The Way.
Note: this book will teach you how to make yeast breads and sourdough breads, i.e. "slow breads" that take several hours (or even more). This isn't about "quick breads" like banana bread, coffee cake, beer bread, etc. Those are all delicious too, but they're significantly easier than slow breads, so if you want to make one of those, you can pretty much just google a recipe and go to town. This book will help you out with the sometimes-very-complex process of those slow-but-incredibly-delicious breads. I promise, you really can make them. And this book can help.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this eARC for unbiased review. This review will be cross-posted to my social media accounts closer to the book release date.
This was an entertaining cookbook perfect for beginners. I had never made homemade bread in my life before this. The directions were easy to follow and I chuckled the entire time. While my bread was still…… special, this book certainly wasn’t to blame. I can’t wait to try out more and get better. The comic book style worked really well for the visual learner in me. I am not sure how I am going to go back to regular cook books after this.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this eARC.

I received this DRC from NetGalley.
This was a very detailed book. The recipes were explained well. A lot of background information was included about ingredients and the science behind some parts of it. I also enjoyed the artwork style. My favorite part was the Audrey II - looking sourdough starter.
Very informative and interesting book. I highly write recommend it. Very educational. Very enjoyable.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
Let's Make Bread 🍞 is an engaging, and entertaining read which is chock-full of wisdom about the fine art of bread-making.
Baking has been one of my primary hobbies since childhood, however, I still had plenty to learn from this fun-to-read manual. This book provides thorough information and artwork that guides you through what you need to make the different types of bread, to details such as how to care for and feed your favorite sourdough starter.
Just a few changes I made since I read the book are: I now know for which type of bread to use my proofing baskets for, and I switched to Heritage flour for bread-making, and using red box French Saf-T instant yeast (both were game changers), taste and quality-wise). I can only imagine the wealth of information to be obtained by readers new to bread making; I certainly wish I had the benefit of this book when I began (although I am delighted to have it now)!
This book motivated me to make Cloverleaf bread rolls today for the first time, a treat which symbolized the holidays in my familial childhood home.
A big THANK YOU to Ken Forkish and Sarah Became for this guide, and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from this bread 🍞 baker!
If you are curious and want to make delicious top-quality bread, or are just curious about learning more about the subject, this is the ideal new addition to your library. ❤️💜🌹💕
This was my first look into the comic cookbook series and what a cool book it is!
I’m absolutely a visual learner, meaning if I see something explained visually, the information stays with me more clearly than if given verbal directions. A comic cookbook is a perfect crossover and the directions are clear and concise. Lots of different recipes, techniques, and ingredients are shown and explained through comic-style drawings. Lots of cookbooks have photos of the finished product, but this book includes drawings of mixing, kneading, and shaping techniques, which is a great help to a novice (or nervous, like me) bread baker!
I received a free ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I'd honestly never really read a graphic novel that's also kind of a cookbook before, and I'm really glad I decided to check this out. I almost wish this had come out over the pandemic, because I'd have had so much more time to practice!
I selfishly really just wanted early access to this cookbook if I’m being perfectly honest. I own both Let’s Make Ramen and Let’s Make Dumplings and love a comic book cookbook!
I, along with most of America, dove hard into the sourdough craze of Covid. Flour Water Salt Yeast was one of my purchases during that period and when I saw Let’s Make Bread was written by Ken Forkish I actually squealed. If only this book existed back in 2020, it would have saved me a whole lot of internet digging. The tutorials were so precise, from maintaining your starter, to the proper folding method, to troubleshooting the bake on your bread. Before the recipes even began I felt like I completed a Masterclass, but without the hassle of replaying segments over and over. I know because I’ve already endured one.
This book collectively presents everything you could possibly need to know in order to bake a loaf of bread. While other cookbooks (trust me, I probably own them all) feature merely a collection of bread recipes, Let’s Bake Bread gives you recipes specifically pertaining to your levain, with additional variations. The supplemental recipes using the levain discard further prove that the entirety of this cookbook is catered to the actual baker, rather than the admirer. Flour Water Salt Yeast was a beautiful cookbook that is perfectly fine sitting on a coffee table, but Let’s Bake Bread is one that will permanently have flour stuck on the spine.
Thank you to the publisher for providing the ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars. Readers who loved [book:Let's Make Dumplings!: A Comic Book Cookbook|56136151] and [book:Let's Make Ramen!: A Comic Book Cookbook|42583941] will be excited to pick up this new book. The illustrations are adorable as always.
I didn't get a ton out of this book, as I've read a fair few bread/baking/sourdough books, so there wasn't a lot of new info for me. If I did decide to get into sourdough, this would be a top contender for the book I'd buy, though!
eARC from NetGalley.
Part of the "Let's Make" series, this is another amazing graphic novel cookbook that's not only visually engaging but incredibly informative, easy to follow, engaging, and appealing to audiences of all ages. This will make a great addition to any library -- school, public, or home -- and will be devoured by patrons who love to cook and bake. I think any reader who enjoyed the other "Let's Make" would also love this one. One of the reasons I love this one for our high school library is because it is very affordable and we can easily stock the ingredients in our school food pantry so patrons can check out the books and then grab the ingredients and make a homemade meal for their family -- with little to no cost. This book would also make an incredible gift with a pizza peel, bread pan, apron, pot holders, bag of nice flour, mixing bowl, etc. to go with it, especially for teen chefs or those of us who hope to learn to make bread "some day."
An instant like, this delightful read is colorful, informative, and quite thorough. The authors illustrations are key to understanding and enjoying the text. They are visually appealing, a great size for the information being given and also, provides an array of types to ensure the cook to be will have a good solid understanding of what it looks like to be a bread maker. This content also crosses many borders as bread is a universal food, and can be an opportunity for many in any culture.
This beautiful illustrative book is incredible -- I have been wanting to dive into the world of bread-making for quite some time now, and this book is the perfect start. The colors and artistic value this book contains is unmatched. I love this book & plan to continue use it often in the future as I continue my quest for making the most delicious, crisp sourdough bread.
This is such a fun and cute instructional manual on baking various types of breads. Although I did really like the format, I wish that there were also single page non-illustrated recipes to follow the comics for quicker reference!
Thabk you NetGalley, Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press, and Ten Speed Graphic for this fun arc!
5/5 stars
I've loved this series of comic book style cookbooks, and this new one about bread is a great addition! The images are clear and have easy to follow instructions, and the recipes sound very yummy, easy enough for a beginner like me! This was also super informative in a way that felt easy to absorb, and like it wasn't talking down to the reader at all. I really enjoyed this, and want to make some bread now haha
This graphic novel shows you how to make various types of bread with all the measurements, times and ingredients. It does get repetitive at times because it shows you have to do the same steps every time they make a different bread but this books feels like it's a recipe book as opposed to a storytelling book so it's going to show you the entire process every time. I don't have as much of a problem with it because I didn't know how to make bread and this book gave me a good idea of how to after I read it. It is also informative in the science behind making bread such as how yeast works that I found interesting.
I was a little surprised to find this book was in comic style, but it is actually very informative.
It's easy to follow the instructions for the sourdough starter or lavain, as it's called in the book.
I can't wait to try it all out.
