Let's Make Bread is a comic cookbook full of step-by-step recipes for bread of all types that I can't get enough of. It's an innovative way to present recipes. Making the raisin-pecan bread is something I look forward to because I can imagine the aroma that will fill my home after it's done,
What a neat idea for a cookbook. I love the graphic novel format and this was a treat to read. I haven't followed any of the recipes yet, but as a seasoned sourdough baker, they look amazing and the step-by-step instructions are so helpful. More cookbooks should be written as graphic novels.
Wow, what a book. I don’t know how you can make cartoon bread look absolutely delicious, but this book manages it! The perfect how-to bread baking guide, with clear, and easy to follow step by step instructions. The illustrations are ridiculously cute, and mouthwatering. This is the most fun I’ve had while reading a recipe book. Would definitely recommend.
With thanks to NetGalley, and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press, Ten Speed Graphic for an advanced copy to read and review.
Could this be any more perfect?? I doubt it. My Daughter (9yrs) has been quite obsessed with breads lately. And this is the best book for her. We can’t wait to explore the art of baking bread.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Let’s Make Bread graphics in this cookbook are ABSOLUTELY beautiful! There are little graphics are such a little nice personal touch to show the process of making bread. As a beginner, the intricate graphics allows for detailed instructions in a very fun way. Plus being able to see hands on how to perform the tasks. I don’t know how easy following the recipes would be when adding ingredients since they are incorporated into the graphics. and don't stand out. The cookbook sections are the first rise, basics & methods, levain, recipes, and the final proof.
Graphic novel cookbooks are a joy I didn’t know I needed!
I’m a big fan of the graphic novel format and I love bread so as soon as I saw this, I got very excited. Bread making can be very intimidating with all the many steps required to produce a freshly baked loaf. This often means a long list of steps in a recipe book, and I, as a very visual learner, can struggle to piece it all together. This, however, presents every step you’ll need to produce your own bread with different techniques and recipes, and every step is accompanied by Sarah Becan’s wonderful illustrations.
It’s truly such a fun way to introduce people to breadmaking and make what to many is a fine art accessible. I can’t wait to start kneading and bake some loaves for myself.
Thank you to Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
Graphic novel cookbooks might be my new favorite thing. This cookbook was fun and easy to follow, and great for anyone starting out, those who just love bread, or seasoned bakers who want some tips. Award-winning author Ken Forkish has another winner on his hands for sure, perfectly paired with the expert illustrations of Sarah Becan.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ten Speedy Press for a copy of this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
This was something new to me - a cookbook in the form of a graphic novel. I have had some cookbooks that were illustrated, but this is the first time I have encountered one with such depth.
Let's make bread strikes a conversational tone. It breaks down the technical details of bread making, the language and processes and then walks you through all the steps to making bread yourself.
The recipes are clear, every step is illustrated in great deail, making it easy to follow along. Sometimes having photos can be a barrier when you want to cook when your attempt does not match closely enough. The illustrations provide enough detail to clearly follow, without being a picture perfect image that can stop a perfectionist from trying in the first place.
I really liked how this was done, and picked up some interesting details about bread making.
If you want to try making bread, but are finding some of those other books intimidating, give this one a go.
Loving all the cookbook comic books! What a great way to demonstrate cooking for the young and not so young.
This book tackles bread baking which seems very intimidating to me and I think most cooks. After reading this book I feel I could almost tackle it myself.
The book emphasized making one's own starter/yeast/leavening which I thought made things more interesting. The directions were quite complete and specific which is most helpful. I appreciated the discussion of the equipment and ingredients to ensure success in breadmaking.
What was very clear to me is that bread making is an exacting and time consuming process but the book makes it appealing enough to give it a try.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to review the book! Due to be published May 2024 just in time for warm weather and leisure time to make bread!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book before publication.
My mom went to culinary school and I have fond memories of watching her bake in our kitchen to practice for school. We ate a lot of great things, most notably bread. While reading this book I was able to come to my mom with what I’d learned, as well as questions I had.
I can’t say that I’m a baking monster after reading this book because I have yet to wade into the pile of baking supplies in my pantry, but I feel more confident in my ability to give this bread making thing a shot. I have never seen clearer directions in a how-to book. There was a lot going on with the back and forth of prepping the dough, but through the art in the graphic novel the different steps began to make sense. I’m clearly a visual learner when it comes to baking. None of this would’ve made sense to me in only text. I can’t wait to order this book and try out the recipes.
What a clever concept! This book made me feel empowered. I never considered making bread before, but following along with such fun and easy to comprehend drawn steps, I know I can do it. I can’t wait to buy this in print. Thank you for the opportunity to check this cookbook out.
This was one of those odd types of books that I never thought I would see around.
A comic cookbook on bread. That is basically what it is.
I think this could be a good tool though for people who may struggle with understanding step by step processes that are put in black and white terms like classic cookbooks. There is a flair about being able to walk with the author through the processes being described that make the idea of breadmaking a bit less daunting and more interesting.
This is a wonderful beginners book to make bread. The illustrations are amazing as well as super helpful. It's very easy to mess up baking bread and this book helps break everything down on making a successful loaf of bread.
A recipe book in comic form, this is fun but it is hard to take seriously, the comic illustrated style is boring and doesn’t make the bread the star. Surprisingly hard to find the substance of any recipe.
I did like this book and at the same time I think I would get so much more from it, if instead of drawings I could have pictures, let me explain, I did like the content, and I am trying to make levain the same way that is told in the book, but the drawings left many things to imagination and don’t bring to life how things should really look.
I think that for anything, the first thing you’ll need is passion, and clearly who wrote this book is really in love with cooking and making bread, and I think maybe instead of going in the route of drawing the recipes, dough and ingredients, people would get so much more from actual pictures, at least I would, but that being said, I think this book could be an excellent way of introducing backing bread to someone new.
Thank you NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press, Ten Speed Graphic, for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.
This is a really cute cookbook. I'm not normally a fan of comic book style books, but because it's about bread making and it's detailing all the steps, this format really works.
Let's Make Bread has a good number of bread loaves to make and variations to those recipies to expand even further.
I think this is a great book for beginners, but also for more experienced bread bakers as there is equipment mentioned that I've personally never used that could prove useful instead of "making it work" with what I have.
I highly recommend checking out this book if you want to try your hand at bread making. It's really fun and full of great information.
I was so excited to see this book was coming out. I loved Let’s Make Ramen and Let’s Make Dumplings. The illustrations and explanations were easy to follow and understand. Bread making has always mystified me. You take flour and yeast, water and a pinch of salt and move your hands in a certain way and magic happens. I have never had luck making bread except in my 30 year old bread machine that you just dump in the ingredients and turn it on.
There is nothing like the smell of fresh baking bread to lift your spirits and raise the appetite. Thanks to Forkish for his easy to follow recipes and tips on making levain, I have a sourdough starter in my fridge and we are baking a loaf of bread weekly. Becan’s illistrations are easier to understand than photographs of the process. I was able to knead my bread and feel confident I was doing it correctly for the first time ever.
This one deserves a Beard award. Let’s Make Bread is a must have for all home kitchens.
I loved the concept of this, it’s fun, it’s engaging, it’s educational and it’s very well put together! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read the ARC!
I’m currently in my ✨ bread baking ✨ era and I loved the concept of this, it’s fun, it’s engaging, it’s educational and it’s very well put together. I am a visual learner so I found the comic book style of this recipe book genius, all the steps are easy to follow especially having the matching pictures. I think it is something regardless of age would enjoy and I cannot wait to bake the bacon bread because that sounds delicious!

Thank you NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for the opportunity to review this book.
Let's Make Bread! is a superb visual introduction to the process of making bread from scratch, including creating and using "levain," also known as sourdough starter. As someone who has made a lot of bread, I learned a few tips, but overall didn't find it super interesting. However, I think someone very new to the process would learn a lot from this book, especially if that person was a visual learner.
The only thing I'd say this book is missing is a bit of humor. Although it's a serious book, more cookbook than anything else, I think the expectation for graphic novels is an element of humor. The content was solid and informative, but some humor in the illustrations would have made the overall book a little more engaging.
Thanks to Ten Speed Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
