This is a hauntingly beautiful story. There are so many twists and turns. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I was wrong.
The author does a great job of planting seeds with cleverly written plot points. The way the book is written is quite brilliant. And the way the author expertly ended the chapters and scene breaks, I had no choice but to keep going until I finished the book.
Poor Eliza. I couldn’t even begin to try to summarize her journey. But she gains so much strength and courage, I was cheering for her. Felton too had amazing moments and growth. So many entangled plots and characters. It’s such a great book!
Thank you to the publisher for the NetGalley link. All views are my own.
This was a good story. It starts out with a bang, but it slowed for me. I didn't really care for the characters, but I cared what the outcome was going to be. The twist didn't feel quite right to me, but the ending was satisfying. This was my first book by the author and I would pick up more.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I did NOT see that coming!
I have read several of Hannah's books, and I knew the storyline was going to have a twist that I didn't see coming. So, I intentionally looked for it. But boy, was I wrong! Far, far from being right..
The Girl From The Hidden Forest was such a delightful read.
I just turned the last page, but I want to reopen it to page one and start again. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Felton Northwood, and the bravery of Miss Eliza.
Another fantastic book added to my favorite book list. ❤️
The Girl from the Hidden Forest is an interesting gothic-style Regency romance. Eliza, the titular character, is confused about her past and tries to work out answers based on murky memories and contradictory stories she's been told. I had a hard time following some of the twists and turns, so I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I had hoped. I admired the hero, Felton, and I trusted him even when Eliza didn't. Bonus: I loved the little dog, Merrylad. (What a fun name for a dog!) Recommended for those who enjoy a little gothic mystery in their Regency romances.
Hannah Linder is a beautiful story teller. I couldn't put this book down. Romance meets adventure meets mystery this book has it all.
To clear his family's name, Felton Northwood rides into the forest and abducts a girl who witnessed the murder his father is accused of. He returns her to her real family, but after fourteen years of living in the forest cottage, she does not remember her family or the crime -- just the nightmares. As age tries to regain her footing with her father and learn societal expectations, rumors of murder and attemps on her life start to occur. Felton is determined to find the murderer to end the string of deaths and family scorn.
Unique premise. Eliza is sweet, and I love her relationships with her dog Merrylad and sweet Minney. There are times she and Felton both say they lost everything, but there was still a dog in her life and two loved ones in his. It seemed odd that she often relishes being ordered around by him. I get appreciating leadership, but she specifically likes when he commands her to do things. Can't say I relate. As with many romances these days, there are comments about not being able to live without each other and statements like "only she matters," which is unhealthy. Did not expect several surprises near the end!
This was such a creative storyline! I enjoyed every moment of Eliza’s journey, especially the parts that included Felton. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I have read Linder’s work before and loved it, but this one might be my favorite. She has such a way with words. She easily draws readers into the story, you don’t even realize it at first honestly. Plus she has a twist that I did not see coming. I literally gasped when I read it. And I love surprises like that!
Eliza and Felton were such well thought out characters. One looking for answers from one who can’t remember them, until she can…… At first I didn’t care for Felton if I’m being honest. I thought he was way too pushy towards Eliza trying to remember. I know why of course, to help his family, but still, it almost felt like too much. But each time they met and interacted, my heart softened for him a bit. Kind of like his softened for Miss Eliza. Squee! It was such a sweet romance to watch blossom into something beautiful.
This book has something for everyone. History, a little gothic vibe, regency, mystery, romance, emotion and so much more. Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Imagine being stolen from your estate bedroom as a five year old and living hidden in a forest with only a storytelling father figure and no outside contact until a young woman! This was the life of Eliza Ellis until handsome Felton Northwood steals her away and returns her to life as Miss Eliza Gillingham, daughter of a viscount! Eliza has vague memories of her mother being murdered the night she was stolen from her home. She does not feel that her biological father loves her and he really doesn't know how to act with this young lady. It was surprising to me when I learned who the murderer really was! The story started out slowly for me but had a great ending! I received a complimentary copy of The Girl from the Hidden Forest from Barbour Publishing. This is my honest opinion.
What an intriguing tale! Written by a new to me author, so I really did not know what to expect.
I was not expecting to find myself as captivated as I did....this book just kinda sucked me in.
It's the mystery that did it....I couldn't handle Eliza's nightmare of a beast, and not knowing who was behind it.
Eliza herself was also completely captivating. I loved seeing her evolve from a girl of the forest to the person she was born to be.
This book has a lot going on, and it has a lot of talk about a nightmare....so it is a bit scary at times. (I'm glad I wasn't reading this late at night)
I will definitely be reading more books by this author!

Eliza grew up with stories and fairy tales like many girls do but a nightmare always lingered. Soon the nightmare became real as she is brought to a new world she doesn't remember and makes some new friends. Does the nightmare fall away? Does she find her happy ending? A must read! Thank you for sharing your story!
Do you ever read a book and don’t know what to do now that it’s done? That was this book. It was so beautiful and I loved how much the characters grew throughout the book. I wanted to give Felton a piece of my mind quite a few times but I really liked his character. Eliza was such a beautiful character and I loved her innocence and sweet personality. That was probably one of my favorite aspects of the book. Her innocence shown so bright amidst such a dark world.
I received an eARC from netgalley, all opinions are my own.
This is another case of “I think that this book would be quite enjoyable, if it weren’t for the abysmal formatting through kindle. I will revisit it as a print book eventually.
This is a new author to me, but I will definitely be checking out her other works. I never even knew such a thing as a Christian regency romance suspense existed, but this was great! I kept thinking I figured out who done it, but the author really subverted my expectations.
Our main character Eliza is thrown into an emotional roller coaster when she is kidnapped from her home in the woods with her adoptive father and delivered to her biological father, a member of the well off society she was always raised to disapprove of and not trust. As she begins to regain some slight memories, she is the only key to solving the mystery of her mother’s murder years ago.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Gothic Mystery, Murder, Romance, Missing Memories, Kidnapping, Suspense, The Girl from the Hidden Forest was such a hard book to put down.
From the moment you begin reading and enter the forest, Hannah Linder begins weaving the strands of her story creating a world that at first seems so simple, but slowly reveals and confirms that no well written story is as simple as it begins.
The realism is such that those who are triggered by blood or physical alternations may want to check for specific triggers. However these moments and details fit within the story and contribute to the story’s complexity as well as conveying the seriousness and high stakes for the characters within the story.
In reading this, it caused me to consider how I think about those I meet who are from different backgrounds and also how I face things that I may fear. To show compassion and to have strength in the face of hard things are two of the characteristics that were showcased beautifully in this book.
This story grabs you with a firm grip of mystery, pulling you into a forest of intrigue, danger, and suspense from the opening paragraph. Hannah Linder’s The Girl form the Hidden Forest tangles readers in an intricately woven narrative that bounces around like branches in the wind as main characters, Eliza Gillingham and Felton Northwood try to figure out what really happened when Eliza’s mother was murdered.
With attention-grabbing scenes, and wild heart-pumping twists, Linder develops characters that astonish and dazzle the reader. Romance wafts through the pages with a softness that complements the harsh thrill of suspense and keeps you wanting to get to that next chapter. With its fast pace and interesting plot, this is one story you won’t want to put down.
For readers who like a good mystery and unexpected romance, The Girl from the Hidden Forest is a must-read!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher but was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This is the first book I have read by Hannah Linder. It is a good, unique, fantasy, suspense, and romantic story. It deals with loss of family/friends, lies and betrayal, villains, friendship, and romance. It also has some shocking and surprising twist throughout the book too. Thank you to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review a ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Quite unlike anything I have ever read before, but that is why I love Netgalley. I love stumbling upon unique tales like this one. This is not my last Hannah Linder novel.
This was a dnf for me--too slow to get to the point and I'm just feeling confused for too long into the book. The writing itself is fine, and perhaps I'm missing the point, but...
Hannah Linder's 4th novel is another Gothic Regency full of danger, intrigue twists and turns. It is about a young woman who was raised in a remote part of a forest in Northern England but a retired Sea Captain. Until one day: a Lord comes and finds her, telling her she was in fact the long-lost daughter of a Viscount who went missing 14 years earlier.
The day her mother was murdered. Eliza has repressed memories of this event which manifest as dreams and pictures of a mysterious man known as “the beast”.
Lord Felton, who found and “rescued” her lost his brother in tragic circumstances years earlier and is struggling to keep his family together. As soon as Eliza is returned to her “rightful” place in her family and ancestral home the danger ramps up with a killer on the loose who is a danger to both.
The Girl from the Hidden Forest is an exciting and atmospheric story. The mystery is also well-written and unexpected.
You cannot be sure which character to trust, even the protagonists at times.
I am a sucker for traumatized heroes, so Felton was almost perfect for me. Almost: though I think that Carolyn Miller might have done a slightly better job of writing a male character with what would not be recognized as PTSD in a Regency setting.
Eliza was great: she’s a very well-drawn character – but I really think she could have been written better, especially in terms of the repressed memories and the potential impact of what happened to her. I think someone else mentioned that she and Felton should have been left with serious trauma and mental health issues after everything, but it seemed to kind of disappear towards the end.
Also, they seemed to heal from injuries absurdly quickly. They’re not superhumans.
I understand things needed to be wrapped up what they had been through was going to have an impact.
Don’t let that put you off though: its still a great book for fans of Regency and Gothic Romance/Thrillers.
Thanks to Barbour for approving me for this title on Netgalley. I was not required to write a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
4 STARS
This was my first book by Hannah Linder and I will definitely be reading more of her stuff in the future. Hannah’s writing style is absolutely beautiful. In particular, I loved the way she described the character’s emotions, as well as the way she described scenery. I also enjoyed the mystery at the center of this novel, which was surprising to me due to the fact that I tend not to be a fan of mysteries or thrillers that are set in the past. I also didn’t predict the plot twist, which is always a plus. I did struggle with connecting to certain characters at times, particularly Felton. I’m not 100% sure what it was about him that got on my nerves, but there were multiple occasions, throughout the entirety of the novel, where I REALLY disliked him. With that being said, he did begin to grow on me by the end and I’m ultimately really happy with the story as a whole.
Thank you to Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for the complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
