I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
3.5 stars adjusted to 3 GR stars. I've been debating whether to adjust this to 3 or 4 GR stars. I have been reading Annie Rains almost from the beginning; I started sometime during her 1st series, a military romance series and I have loved most of them; most were 4 or 5 stars. During this book, I fluctuated how I felt during my entire reading experience. Mainly because I did not like either of the main characters, Melody or Liz. I also feel this one will be somewhat forgettable.
THE GOOD:
A sweet tale of friendship, heartbreak, and healing.
THE BAD:
Sometimes a little too “light”. The choice of the one of the group who was lost seemed a bit off, but I guess it makes sense for the choices her sister makes.
CONCLUSION:
A good beach read. Recommended.
A heartwarming and enchanting tale that lovingly captures the essence of friendship, resilience, and the magic of second chances. I loved the portrayal of small town life and the community that binds the characters. A delightful read.
Many thanks to Kensington and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
What a wonderful story of friendship and small town living. Ten years after she left her hometown of Trove Isle, NC, Melody Palmer is back to receive an unexpected inheritance—her great aunt’s thrift store, Hidden Treasures. There, in a glass case beneath the register, Melody spies the long-lost charm bracelet she shared with her high school friends, Liz and Bri, and her younger sister, Alyssa. After a devastating prom night accident, it disappeared, and the girls’ friendship evaporated with it. Slipping the bracelet on her arm for safekeeping, Melody soon finds herself crossing paths with her former friends once more.
In a grown-up twist on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , USA Today bestselling author Annie Rains pens a powerful, uplifting story of female friendship and resilience in a small Southern town, as former childhood friends overcome grief and begin to take new chances in their lives… with the help of a long-lost gift they were meant to share.
Annie Rains does it again another great novel about 3 friends who face a tragic accident when they are young, which separates them until one day they are reunited… this book is about second chances, facing your fears… and about a magical charm bracelet that keeps these friends together. Definitely recommend reading this book…
This was a awesome book of friendship. Through tragedy and mistakes friendship that was never intended to be broken. There is romance but the story was more about friendship and forgiveness. I think it was one of the best summer books I've read.
This was the most heartfelt loving friendship story I have ever read. I totally related to the characters, including the three friends, Melody, Liz, and.Bri. And of course I loved how Melody’s great aunt Jo’s thrift store and the friends charm bracelet kept their friendship together through thick and thin, smiles and tears, etc I . highly recommended it to all my friends and family and also recommended to anyone who has close friendships and believes in second chances at love.
It’s been 10 years since Melody Palmer has been back to this small town of Trove Isle. Her Great Aunt has left Melody her Thrift Store bringing back Melody to connect with her 3 friends from high school of years past. 10 years ago on their Prom night a tragic accident changed these 4 friends lives forever affecting each one differently. Liz suffered from extreme anxiety, Bri ended up in state prison, Alyssa, Melody’s sister, ended up dying in the accident and Melody fled from the small town. While Melody was cleaning and organizing the thrift store she found a mystical charm bracelet that had disappeared on that Prom night. Each charm meant something to them such as love, adventure and friendships.
As each friend learns to deal with the past of that tragic eventful Prom night each friendship grows stronger again with love, forgiveness and trust. Through this time past and present charms are found throughout and added to the charm bracelet.
This is my first book that I’ve read from this author and thoroughly enjoyed it. It follows through the past to the present the 3 remaining friends where strong friendships are formed again. Annie Rains shows you what it means to be in a true friendship. She also shows you the tragic hardships each character goes through from the past developing the lasting friendships by overcoming these obstacles. There is also strong support from other love interests in the story giving it a taste of romance. I will definitely be reading more of Annie Rains’s books in the future.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers in letting me read this book and allowing me to leave an honest review.
A story of friendship, loss and overcoming grief.
A long-time friendship of three young women is torn apart by a tragic accident on their prom night. Each handles the tragedy in a different way. Melanie runs away to the city to try to forget the loss. Liz is suffering from guilt that she can’t seem to get over. She gives up her dream of becoming a photographer and stays home to help her parents in their bakery. Bri spirals into drugs and ends up at a women’s correctional facility. When all of them return to Trove Isle, can they return to the close friendship they once had and overcome the loss of Alyssa, the fourth member of their original group?
Ms. Rains puts her heart into every book she writes. Her characters come right off the page and into your heart. I highly recommend The Charmed Friends of Trove Isle.
This book has a bit of a ‘travelling pants’ vibe but is more believable in that the friends share a charm bracelet which obviously is a one size fits all. There is however an added magical realism angle which is what helps all the friends overcome past trauma and where that trauma took them.
Three women, then girls, ended up in an accident which took the life of the fourth. This sent shock waves into their individual lives and they all ended up spending the next few years in ways they did not previously anticipate. Especially since only two girls remained close after.
This book is about recovery and a dash of the unexplained. I did not like the cover which seemed a little too childish but the writing was what kept me reading.
I would recommend this to fans of friendship books. There are some deeper issues tackled here as well and the overall conversations were more realistic than I expected given the plotline.
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
Annie Rains is a great author who really captures the feel-good story to warm your hear. I thoroughly enjoyed this one with a bit of magical realism sprinkled in. It's a story of second chances and remembering the bonds of friendship that tie people together. When Melody returns back home after her nine year self-exile to Trove Isle after the death of her beloved Aunt Jo, she takes on her thrift store of treasures. Not intending to stay, she discovers that the true treasures are her friends Liz and Bri, and family. Liz, running her parents bakery and chaperoning her teenage sister for the summer, learns to forgive and embrace Melody back in to the fold. Together these girls have survived a tragic event although barely. Now with the magic of a charm bracelet where charms keep coming, they come to remember their friendship and the ties that bind them. This is a quick read, and a cozy read. It's the perfect book to throw in your beach bag or to read on a rainy day. Many thanks to #netgalley #annierains #thecharmedfriendsoftroveisle #kensington for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I loved Annie Rains other book that I read however this one was very confusing to follow and I wasn't really invested in all the characters. I did give it until 25% before I dnf'd as I did have hope that it would get better but it just didnt which was disappointing.
Melody Palmer has come back to Trove Isle, NC after being gone for ten years. Her Aunt left her a thrift store and she has to decide what she wants to do with it. She isn't quite happy to be back, after the death of her sister during g her senior year of high school she just wanted to escape those memories and move on with her life. When she left the town behind she left her two best friends too. Bri was now in jail and looking forward to getting out soon. Liz had never left and had many anxiety issues she dealt with on a daily basis. Can the three women ever get back to the friendship they had or is it to little to late? This is a wonderfully emotional read that will definitely take you on a rollercoaster ride.
I absolutely love everything by Annie rains and this was like nothing I’ve ever read before. I highly encourage you to pick it up and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
THE CHARMED FRIENDS OF TROVE ISLE - Annie Rains
GOOD POTENTIAL - 3 stars
Plot - 3.5 stars - Ten years after leaving her hometown, Melody is back to receive an unexpected inheritance—her great aunt’s thrift store. Amazingly, she also discovers the long-lost charm bracelet she shared with her high school friends. Now Melody is determined to rebuild the bridges she burned when she fled town after a tragic accident. Liz has stayed in Trove Isle, helping with her parents’ business instead of pursuing her photography goals. And Bri spiraled into self-destruction, serving four years in prison.
Writing - 4 stars - As usual, Rains caught my attention right away, with her casual writing style and comfortable small-town vibe. She writes in an easy-to-read manner and often includes some sort of underlying medical or mental issue that adds meat to a story and causes the reader to think.
Characters - 2.5 stars - This is where the story stumbled for me this time. Although the characters are not afraid to show their vulnerabilities, I found them frustratingly hung up on their pasts. Liz, especially, cannot move past her high school prom in any way. She works for the family business (even though she doesn't like it), she doesn't drive, she is afraid of everything, and she doesn't want to build any new relationships, romantic or otherwise. I get that PTSD is a thing and that she survived a tragic accident, but it seemed like she used that as a crutch any time she didn't want to branch out or do anything at all outside of her comfort zone. She just sat around feeling sorry for herself. What a sad and limited life she led. Melody, on the other hand, moved away and cut all ties with her hometown. I can understand that more readily since her memories were also sad about that night, although I agree that she was wrong to completely ignore everyone from her past for so long. At least he was willing to try to change when she came home. Even Bri was able to move on, despite the fact that she is in prison for drug-related crimes. She at least owns up to her problems and is dealing with them. The characters all had their personal issues and ways of dealing with their shared past, but I couldn't believe (and found it very frustrating) that they'd let it all languish for years and years before finally facing their feelings.
Title - 3 stars - Apt title, but too long. Self-explanatory.
Cover - 4 stars - A bright color to draw the eye, and the bracelet in the center is, of course, the center of the story (and the people) as well.
Overall - 3 stars - I'm usually a Rains fan, and I like the fact that she often adds depth to her stories with some sort of underlying medical or mental health issue that her characters must deal with. But this book left me more frustrated than pleased. Liz, in particular, was a main character, and she was so closed-minded and judgmental that I wanted to scream. Was she also judging herself? Sure, but she spent way too much time being the victim in her scenario and not enough time trying to move on. Melody, although more evolved because she had branched out and started a new life, also was way too invested in the past and in her broken relationship with Liz and her hometown. There were so many obvious possibilities for both of them that it was frustrating to watch them spend more time with the woe-is-me routine than to reach out to those around them and/or to each other. Despite this misstep, I will continue to look for Annie Rains books because I know they'll be entertaining.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books!
Imagine a grown up Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but with a charm bracelet.
Melody, Liz, and Bri have grown up-and grown apart since high school, and a truly tragic prom night. When Melody comes back to the island to receive her inheritance, she will definitely need the luck-or is it magic-of the charm bracelet to patch up the broken relationships that matter to her.
Definitely a sweet read!
A beautiful heartwarming story of four BBF’s whose life’s were changed the night of their Prom in a horrific car crash. Three survived but each dealt with the loss of Alyssa differently. Melody was her older sister and ran away, Bri got hooked on pain killers due to the injuries she sustained and winds up in jail, lastly Liz the driver suffered panic attacks and is in a rut due to her many insecurities. Nine years have passed and Melody returns home, her Aunt Jo has passed away and left Melody her beloved store. Hoping to sell it and skip town before anyone sees her wasn’t happening in the small town. Plus the store is a mess! A thrift store, that wouldn’t sell for much in the condition it is in. As Melody starts to clean and organize she finds their lost charm bracelet. Eager to show Liz her find begins the journey of growth, second chances and what is important in life.
I truly enjoy reading Annie Rains books. Yes life isn’t always easy or perfect, but trust the author to find that HEA. Thank you #NetGalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine and mine alone. #TheCharmedFriendsofTroveIsle #AnnieRains
A terrific emotional read. Love, loss, second chances, forgiveness. letting go and ultimately recognizing you can go home again. Melody returns to Trove Isle ten years after she left promising herself she would never return. After her beloved Aunt Jo dies, she returns home for her end of life celebration. It is then that she finds out that Aunt Jo left her very much adored thrift/second hand shop Hidden Treasures to her. She is perplexed as her aunts motives. When she finds a long lost charm bracelet that meant so much to so many she is even more confused. It’s a wonderfully written story about the draw of friendship, family and so much more. I really enjoyed this read. Another great story by an author I’ve come to adore.
Thank you Kensington books for the review copy! This is a sweet engaging story, I love books that focus on friendship, self growth, and return to home/small town vibes. The multiple POVs and attention to developing the backstory as well as each character stood out as strengths in this charming under the radar summer read.
