In this follow-up to A Bear, a Bee, and a Honey Tree (2022), Bear tries to catch a fish to eat but the fish has other ideas. The rhyming text has energy and a thumping rhythm that reflects the action between the bear and fish: “a hungry bear, a homesick fish, a bear and a fish, wishing a wish.” Although this is not memorable, it contains a surprise ending. The full color digital artwork, which resembles gouache, is set in the forest with animals with expressive faces that add humor. Sure to be popular at storytime, with the audience calling out some of the repetition.
My daughter really enjoyed this book. The bear and the fish both want different things, the bear to have a snack and the fish to find his way home. She loved the illustrations and the characters.
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for my ARC!
What an adorable book! The first thing that came to my mind when reading it was that it would be great as a repeated text for preschoolers. Because of the repetitiveness in the book it would be easy for young children to pick up on the pattern and read along, similar to books like "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" or "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". Children could also do movements throughout the story to "act out" what is happening. The theme of kindness appeared right at the end of the story, reminding the reader that even small gestures can make a big difference. The end of the book was one of my favorite parts and could be used as a lesson on predicting or inferencing because the author doesn't include words on the last page, just an illustration. I loved that the story was simple, but had easy to see illustrations and a bit of humor tied in as well. Kids would absolutely LOVE this book and I would definitely recommend it to teachers and parents alike!
A cute, fast paced rhyming book about a hungry bear and an itty bitty fish.
Nice illustrations as well that brought the story to life.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
This was short and sweet, perfect for my 2 year old. The illustrations were adorable, it’s fun to read aloud (as the reader!). The story felt a little lacking but I think it’s one you appreciate the more times you read it, which is just fine because toddlers require you to read the same book repeatedly LOL
This book is a great, short read. My son is almost four and loved it! The illustrations are so cute and the way they portrayed empathy towards others was so precious.
A Bear, a Fish, and a Fishy Wish is a quick, beautifully illustrated story that is perfect for young children. I loved the rhyming words, word placement on the pages, and the overall theme of kindness.
I received an ARC from Astra Publishing House | Hippo Park via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this book. I loved the illustration of the book, it was a cute and fun read.
Lively rhyming text and bold illustrations make A Bear, a Fish and a Fishy Wish by Daniel Bernstrom, illustrated by Brandon James Scott, a perfect choice for story tme. The story is perfect for reading aloud and boldly drawn illustrations will draw children in. I'm getting a copy. for my library.
This is a story of a bear trying so hard to catch a little teeny fish. In the end, the bear decides against feasting on the fish, let’s it go to find food elsewhere.
I was drawn to this book based on the cover illustration and title.
I really enjoyed the art style, the word placements and font! The water scenes with the fish are beautiful to look at. The story flows so well in this book so it’s an easy read to my baby girl!
This is a short book with a fun rhyming scheme. A hungry bear is looking for his next meal when a homesick fish leads him on
A different journey to find food.
What a glorious book - Berstrom and Scott have done it again! This is a great companion to A Bear, a Bee, and a Honey Tree. The bold illustrations and expressive characters are perfect for reading aloud or to enjoy on your own. A true showing that actions speak louder than words. I can’t wait to read this in story time – fun for all ages.
An absolutely delightful follow-up. Sweet in its own right! With spare text, the illustrations carry the reader through the twisty, turning river right up to the climactic moment when the bear decides what he will do with the fish. An unexpectedly thoughtful and funny ending.
A Bear, a Fish, and a Fishy Wish is an adorable picture book that I can see myself recommending to kids who love nature and animals. It is a sweet story of a hungry bear longing to eat a fish, and a small fish on a journey home.
Thank you NetGalley, Daniel Bernstrom and Brandon James Scott, and Astra Publishing House for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a CUTE book. The illustrations are beautiful. The story is very short but the message of the story is one about kindness and awareness of others and looking past what you want in order to help others in need. I would definitely add this book to my preschool classroom library when we focus on the trees unit and also when focusing on social skills. I know my 3 year old daughter would love this book also!
This is the story of a hungry bear that wishes for fish, but the fish wishes to go home. Who will get their wish-the hungry bear or the homesick fish. Love the silly rhyming story with fabulous illustrations! A great follow-up to A Bear, A Bee and a Honey Tree. Children are going to love this one too!!
A perfect followup to A Bear, A Bee and a Honey Tree. Will Bear get the fish he wishes got?
A perfect read aloud! Children love and laugh during this story. I know it will be a story time hit
in the library.
My youngest and I highly enjoyed this book that follows a bear and his desire for something to eat and a fish who has a wish of his own. The illustrations were beautiful and the story fun and playful.
This book tells the story of a hungry bear seeking a fish and that fish who is trying to get home. The illustrations are very well done and I love the rhythm of the text to read aloud. The plot itself was not my favorite, but the characters were cute enough.
Thank you NetGalley and Astra Publishing House for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A cute story with simple text and a simple story. Great for new readers who are using pictures to figure out words.
