ADHD is Awesome - Penn Holderness & Kim Holderness

📖 This book is a fresh spin of ADHD and how it can actually be awesome. (Awesome meaning: extremely impressive or daunting, inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.) Penn (& Kim) did a great job of explaining what ADHD is and how it might look or feel. They talked about how you can support yourself or a loved one who has ADHD.

📚 Penn did a masterful job of created an engaging and uplifting book about ADHD. The audiobook was phenomenal. Both Penn and Kim read through this book, along with a few other guests.

Such a helpful book, as a professional working with ND children & young people, it's great to be able to access resources like this book and share with families to enable them to understand the strengths of their neurodivergent child/young person more!

The Holderness Family has another hit on their hands! There are so many funny, uplifting moments in this book that highlight the parts of having AHDH that are truly unique and beautiful. As a spouse and a parent to my family members with ADHD, I found the perspective of this book to be beyond beautiful, and refreshing. In a world of 'self-help' books and 'how to change your child in 30 days' tomes, ADHD is Awesome presents a wholly different approach; one that sees the value in neurodiversity without discounting the challenges it brings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about what ADHD is, looking to broaden their skills of understanding neurodiversity, or just looking for a fun, educational read!

In the past I found this social-media star and his family cringe at best and painfully awkward at worst. I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book. But as an adult-diagnosed person with ADHD I really loved it and found it quite helpful. There's a lot of great information here that is rooted in science and also in self kindness.

If you're familiar with The Holderness Family's videos, you should have a good idea of of how Penn and Kim operate, and this book was as enjoyable as their other entertainment. Told in short and easy-to-digest chapters, ADHD is Awesome contains a lot of useful information as well as actionable steps for managing your ADHD. It's funny and heartwarming and completely relatable. I will definitely be recommending this one to anyone looking for help with their ADHD.

This popular youtube family has such relatable stories and experiences. They share the ADHD experience from Penn's POV, then the neurotypical response from someone who loves an ADHDer (Kim), which I think will be so valuable to families that need help understanding a neurodivergent family member. Penn is just as funny in writing as he is in video. The authors do a great job of referencing and crediting researchers in the ADHD field, so I feel like readers come away with more knowledge than just anecdotal tales.

This is an accessible resource for anyone who is looking to learn more about ADHD in a relatable way.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this novel. 4/5 stars.

In true ADHD fashion, I was doing really well reading this in chunks and then I kind of started a series and forgot about it until I checked my NetGalley app and it told me I only had 4 more days to finish the PDF before it expired. Anyways, this is a good read told from someone with ADHD and the right brand of human and the real life touches inter mixed. I liked how it didn't shy away from the ugly parts of ADHD and it didn't try to suggest solutions that didn't make sense for ADHD people.

Fantastic, joyful read about the ins and outs of ADHD. This book provided incredible insight into the inner workings of an ADHD mind in a positive, realistic way. I appreciated the vulnerability in Penn sharing his stories of struggle and Kim's insights into living and loving someone with ADHD. It was a fun, engaging read that gave me better understanding of some of the things my son struggles with.

This is a super relatable book about ADHD, and I’ve read a lot of them at this point. The format was definitely designed for the ADHD reader, which I appreciated- it’s written in short segments that are easy to squeeze in throughout the day. I wasn’t familiar with the writers, but I’d imagine that if you were fans you’d like the book even more. They offered some good concrete ideas for capitalizing on your adhd, and some tools for coping when times are difficult. I also liked the inclusion of advice for partners of those with ADHD, and the notes from Kim’s perspective. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc.

I loved this book. It really breaks down ADHD and explains it so well. It's a great book for people without it to learn what it is and how it affects us.

An insightful and incredibly entertaining look at everyday struggles with ADHD and how to combat them. This was honestly the best look at ADHD I have ever read, and as someone with ADHD and a parent of a child with ADHD as well as working with ADHD and ASD kids for a living, I have read a lot on ADHD.

I have always admired Penn's exuberant, optimistic attitude. Our family has been fans of The Amazing Race for decades, and my kids -- especially the one with ADHD -- really enjoyed the season that featured Kim and Penn. It was incredible to watch Penn "hack" his hyperfocus to excel at the race.

ADHD is Awesome takes a lot of the Holdernesses' experiences and repackages them into a "how to" book for folks who have a very specific form of ADHD -- the extroverted, hyperactive "life of the party" type. If you have (or are) an introverted, inattentive-type ADHDer, this book may or may not be the right one for you. In over 300 pages, there was very little about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria or how ADHD might present differently in other people.

I think ADHD is Awesome will do a lot of great work destigmatizing neurodivergence for fans of the Holderness family who might not be intimately familiar with ADHD already.

Will definitely be requesting this title to be purchased at our library and recommending to readers!

I also thoroughly enjoyed the fact that this title doesn't have a listed archive date when I requested it, as someone with ADHD myself the archive dates cause me a bit of stress ensuring I read and review before the date, but I feel like it was a purposeful decision to leave it dateless for this book :)

First things first: I have ADHD. Therefore, I'm always keen to learn more about my brain, even more so when it comes from a fellow fuzzybrain like mine. Besides, I'm usually rather skeptical about books that sound like they want to sell a mental health condition as a hyped feature of #hustlecultureglory.
Thankfully, this is not the case with this book. While the title might come on strong, the book is much more nuanced and the authors Penn and Kim Holderness discuss ADHD on multiple levels.
I loved this book and I highly recommend it, especially for those of us who do not take meds and rely on other strategies to live with ADHD. The author is NOT anti-medication and explains why he chose to opt out of medically treating his ADHD. In doing so, apart from living in an ADHD-friendly environment and being supported by his wife, co-author Kim, he shares various techniques and strategies one can implement to manage ADHD symptoms. Kim, as the non-ADHD partner, adds her perspective about living with (and managing) someone whose brain works differently.

Looking forward to getting a physical copy once the book is out :)

While I read this as an eBook, I imagine the audio book will be even better, as their narration is always amazing! This book is informative and entertaining while also useful for folks wanting to know more about living with ADHD. I am a personal fan of everything produced by the Holderness family, so I may be a bit biased, but this is certainly a five star book for me. ^_^

I've been following the Holderness family since Christmas Jammies and watched their amazing win on the Amazing Race. I've been really interested in Penn's open discussions of his ADHD on social media, and was excited to read this. Although I read this as a digital ARC (thanks to NetGalley and the publisher) I bought a physical copy to give to my ADHD son as well. This is a personal narrative sprinkled with expert opinions and advice- its strength is not just in explaining ADHD, but in giving practical examples of how it can be both a major challenge and a major opportunity. I'm so glad my son is growing up in a world where ADHD is seen as awesome in both lights. And frankly, a lot of the book spoke to me as well, as I realize that my entire family is somewhere on the ADHD spectrum. I particularly liked the notes from Kim (Penn's wife) and the discussion of ADHD communication challenges, since that is the area I feel myself most profoundly affected.

Thanks for this worthwhile and fun read!
