I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I've previously read Undead Girl Gang.
Killer House Party starts off very witty and fun. The main character Arden invites the graduating class to a house party at the notorious haunted mansion in town that her parents bought as realtors, only they used her college fund. She's trying to raise money to keep her plans intact. She wants to be a doctor so she can help kids who are overweight, with being comfortable in their size. Admirable.
The house of horrors was little too much for me. Some who enjoy horror will like this book. I enjoyed aspects of the book such as the tone of thr characters sarcasm. It just took a skeptic like Arden to see with her own eyes.

I absolutely love the cover. This was a quick and fun, easy read. Not a new concept or idea but still somewhat entertaining. Nothing special about it to remember. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity
I thought this was going to be a slasher, but it's not. It's a YA haunted house book. I really enjoyed this fun unique take on the genre. This book is short and I flew through it. It was a bit jarring, however, how often the author mentioned these kids ethnicities. She REALLY wanted you to know that these kids aren't white 😂 we get it! Don't need to beat us over the head with it! Anyway, this is a great one to pick up for the spooky season.
This book was a wild ride - not at all what I was expecting! Reminiscent of “The Shining” it kept me on the edge of my seat!
DNF @ 42%
I’m usually one of those people that is willing to give someone a second chance (depending on what they did) With authors, I always give them more than one. The more they write, the more they grow, and become stronger at their craft.
That is where Lily comes in. I’ve read one of their previous books and it wasn’t my favorite but I saw the potential. I was willing to give her a second chance. Second times the charm but it’s not here sadly.
I love creepy books that contain hauntings, so I was eager to start this one. The main character annoyed me from the start but I decided to read on a little further. Turns out that Arden grows more unbearable as the story progresses. Arden, girl, what the hell!? That’s not how I wanted my second experience to go and it saddens me. Alas, I had to say goodbye to this haunted manor tale.
What I enjoyed was Arden and her friends deciding to have a graduation house party inside of a haunted manor. It definitely adds a certain creep factor that not other places would. I also loved how supportive Arden’s friends all were. Besides that, those are the only things I enjoyed about this book.
Killer House Party wasn’t the haunted thrill ride that I was expecting. It’s one I would pass on due to there being a ton of ya horror being released this year.
I requested this book with the hopes of being spooked out and having my heart racing, the synopsis sounded amazing and a good horror. The release day is October 1st and I was hoping this would be a good Halloween book for me to promote etc during that month but it fell short for me. I read 38% and had to stop. It’s a DNF for now but maybe I’ll pick it up again closer to Halloween. The horror wasn’t there and once the storyline picked up I just couldn’t believe what I was reading. I won’t spoil it but yeah. I will give it a 3 stars for now since I did read a decent amount and the storytelling was there. The build up was there I just couldn’t read anymore. I will edit if I do pick it up again and finish it. Thank you Netgalley for my copy.
This was good YA horror book. It did feel a little young. But it had the right amount of spooky vibes.
Witty, dark, and thrilling!
4.5 haunted stars!
This one was one of the best YA horror comedies I've read in a while. It was John Hughes meets Fear Street at Bogey Loenstein's party (if you know, you know 🤣), in the Monster House with Can't Hardly Wait vibes, but with gloriously diverse, dynamic characters. It was campy, cheeky, and compulsive. It had nods to great horror movies that came before it, and held its own as a new entry in the genre.
It took me just a little bit to really get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. It had me smiling and laughing and thinking about all the best horror movies. It even had some skin tingling moments. It was a satisfying, spooky season read with some Thriller vibes, and I think fans of the genre will love it!
Thank you Mac Kids/Henry Holt BYR for the e-arc!
Three teenagers decide to throw a graduation party in a haunted house. What could go wrong? Everything.
This was a decent YA horror story, with some caveats.. The protagonist, Arden, was relatable in most aspects, but her continuous “woe is me” lamenting became irritating. There was also quite a bit of your stereotypical teenage bickering and one-upping on “who has it worse”. I did like Nathanial and his quirky personality. It definitely provided some comic relief throughout the book.
The haunted house vibe was given a little bit of a fresh feel with the scientific take on what was happening. It also gave Arden and Nathanial a change to relish in their nerdiness, which was cool. However, the overall plot and storyline didn’t really provide many twists or leave me shocked by what was happening.
Overall, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. It was an easy, quick read that had some fun parts, some somber moments, and typical teenage angst.
Wasn’t expecting to LOVE this! Has a supernatural element. A very wild ride! Perfect for spooky season!
This book was a well written YA horror. I enjoyed the diverse characters and that our FMC, Arden, was depicted as smart, cute, and curvy. I also liked trying to figure out exactly what was going on with the house and what happened to the Deinhart family.
This is… very much a YA horror book. It’s a little kooky, not so much scary as mildly spooky, and ends the book with the main characters learning a lesson about themselves and hope. It was a quick, decent read, but if you lie actual horror it doesn’t really fit the bill so much.
This is the perfect "fun" spooky read. It's perfect for spooky season & gives you just the right vibes to make it fun!
What a wild ride of a story. It took me a bit to get into it, but by the end I was rooting for the remaining cast of characters. While I don’t think this is a must read for everyone, it definitely does have its audience and I’m excited to suggest it to readers who I know will enjoy it.
This book was great! I love the supernatural part of this! I want expecting it at all! I can't wait to recommend this book in the coming spooky months to my YouTube audience.
Meh… I had expected more from this book. I found it depressing and not a “fun” horror story. I honestly didn’t care for many of the characters. I got vey bored in the middle and took a break, but when I picked it back up I still couldn’t get invested. I suppose it’s just not my type of book.
A high school graduation party in a haunted house, what could go wrong? Everything. Everything goes wrong. The supernatural show themselves in terrifying ways on one page and then on the next in a darkly humorous way. I'd easily recommend this to anyone looking to add more spooky books to their fall reading list.
I love Lily Anderson's stories so the fact that this one didn't work for me just kills me inside. From the plot to the characters to the "horror" I was just not feeling this one.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this one early.
Such a fun and spooky YA read!! This is a great choice to ease into the fall mood and get ready for the best time of the year, spooky season!!
I am not much of a horror reader, especially not at night but this story was cool, unique and scary! Maddy May, Remi and Arden decide to host a party at the deserted haunted mansion Arden’s parents just spent all her college money buying! They are hoping that charging and entrance fee will help her make enough money back, what they don’t anticipate is that the house might want some payment of its own. The rumors about what happened in the house hundreds of years before are multitudinous and all a bit different but as the night wears on they learn the reality might be even worse!
