You know those books that you love for the simple fact of you know what you're going to get? That's how I feel about Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series and The Burning was no different! A man is burned at the stake and the more that's uncovered, the less sympathy you feel for him but you still want to know who is responsible. Great set up by Castillo for a secret society that I'm sure we've not seen the last of.

I absolutely devoured this book. I have read all of the Kate Burkholder series but this one may be my favorite. Linda Castillo went to a whole different level in this one. Just. Wow.
Kate Burkholder is the chief of police in a small town called Painters mill. She also used to be Amish. In this book she’s investigating the murder of an excommunicated Amish man who was found burned at the stake. But there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye (you will be floored!) and as Kate digs deeper she finds herself in some pretty dangerous situations.

Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father. Kate knows the Amish all to well and knows they prefer to handle their own problems without help from the outside world! She gets no help as nobody will speak about the murdered man! She soon investigates farther and realizes there's A dark history of a different type of culture called the Anabaptist, that is very violent! Her case takes a very violent turn towards her when the Anabaptist focus on her! This book had a big focus on the Amish which is what this series is about so I wasn't too sure about it but things got very interesting! Wow! What a book! I highly recommend reading this one! i genuinely LOVED this book!
from the prologue, i was so intrigued i just couldn't stop reading. i finished it in two days and really enjoyed reading it. i learned so much about amish culture and history during the process as well.

i think the pace of the book was perfect, really had me imagining the plot as though it was a crime show i was watching. i was able to really visualize everything and see it as it unfolded.

i rated the burning 4 out of 5 stars only because of the ending. it was so fast and the characters overcame the situation too fast for my liking. i feel as though the build up of the story was so well-fleshed out that once the climax was over, i was thinking to myself "surely THAT wasn't the end!"

don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of books in which the end rights itself, BUT i would of liked more explanation.

I'm obsessed with this series and I will devour everything Linda gives us in the Amish/Kate universe. You learn right away that this is going to be a story with darker themes and it did not disappoint. I love being dangled right to the very end not knowing where we were going to end up, but Kate/tomasetti always make it out on top. I've also enjoyed watching their relationship grow alongside the thriller plotlines. Always recommend Linda Castillo's books!

I'm going to preface this by saying I didn't know this was part of the Kate Burkholder series! I'm not up to date on them.

I'm on book 6 or 7 , so I need to catch up before I can read this one. Which I will do and post on Amazon and my tiktok when I'm caught up.

However, I LOVE this series. I am 1000% sure that this book will deliver just like every other one has! I absolutely love Linda's writing. This series pulled me in when I started reading it about 6 years ago, but life happened. I went back to school, went to work, and just didn't have time to dedicate to reading.

Another thriller from Linda Castillo, Kate Burkholder is a happily married woman, and despite the expectations of her Amish neighbors, has no plans to give up police work. Though no longer Amish, she isn't fully Engish either, as both communities still view her with suspicion. When her brother is implicated in a recent murder, she is relegated to the sideline to avoid any suggestion of impropriety. Of course, that can't stop her from investigating!

This book was another hit from the author as this series continues. Filled with its usual suspense this book keeps the reader page turning. This is a good mystery read that I would recommend to all.

When a man is found burnt at the stake out in the woods, Kate is reminded of an Amish story from her childhood. The regular rounds of visits to his family and friends ensues, and no-one is very shocked or sorry that he's dead. When Kate is told that he was abusive to his children, even breaking one of his son's arms, she realizes he was a despicable person. Is that why he was killed in such a horrific and medieval way? The bishop's wife gives her the name of a man who might know about these ancient killing ways, and Kate jumps to interview him.

This was very exciting at the end. This series always leaves you anxious to read more. What big changes are coming?

This is the upcoming novel in the Kate Burkholder series and it does not disappoint. I read this as an advanced review copy from the publisher and NetGalley. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel just as I have the others. This novel is a fast paced read that kept me wanting more. I loved the bond of the officers, the small town feel, and also the character development. I love Kate and Tomasetti! I absolutely loved the ending of this novel!

The reason for this simple title is evident in the stomach churning Prologue. Milan Swanz, a ne’er-do-well man, excommunicated from his Amish life, is captured, nearly strangled, and then tied to a post and burned alive. This is a horrific crime and newlywed Kate Burkholder and her familiar team begin their investigation. It seems that most of Painter’s Mill has a reason want Milan dead. His ex-wife, an Amish elder, his former boss, the Bishop and his wife have all been victims of Milan’s uncontrolled rage. So has Jacob Burkholder, Kate’s brother. Local politics stir and soon Kate is taken off the case because of Jacob’s involvement. This, of course, doesn’t stop her. During a search into Amish and Anabaptist history, Kate makes a discovery that may solve this case if it doesn’t kill her first.

While The Burning is full of the familiar Painter’s Mill characters and locations, there is a dark side to this mystery. This is the first time Kate and Tomasetti have worked together as a married couple and they face many challenges but the conclusion gives a clue as to what comes next. The Burning will make you want to learn more about Anabaptists, their history, their beliefs and their different sects. Of course this is a 5 star read!

While I love this series and Kate Burkholder, I found this one to be a bit all over the place. After finishing it, I’m still not sure the ending made sense. Generally Linda Castillo is good about wrapping up each case nicely that Kate solves, but it doesn’t seem like that was the case with this one. I loved Tomasetti and Kate’s continued developing relationship, but just wasn’t a fan of all the loose ends.

This was a good mystery read about a gruesome murder in Ohio. It was very interesting as the setting is within an Amish community. The book was slow at times, but there was some action mixed in that brought me to the edge of my seat!

Book 16 in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo was amazing as usual! I have very few authors that I must read EVERYTHING they publish and she is one! Fast paced and always full of action!

The Burning is intense from the very start and doesn’t let go. Kate Burkholder has a gruesome murder on her hands. Some say it’s witchcraft some say a cult whoever did this is now after Kate to get her to stop her investigation. The stakes are even higher when her brother becomes a suspect.
Hold on for this one it’s going to be very bumpy.

This is the next book in the Kate Buckholder series and if you haven’t read any, you are missing out.
This one starts with a man being burned at the stake and somehow Kate’s brother is arrested
Kate was raised Amish until she left the order, it is taking many years for some of the order to trust her.
She’s finally getting a chance to establish some sort of relationship with her brother when he is arrested for murder. Katie knows he did not commit, but can she prove it ?

I absolutely love this series and I can’t wait to see what the future looks like for Kate!

Linda Castillo is that rare writer that grabs you at the beginning of a story and plots story tightly with no extra fluff that keeps you engaged throughout the book . I have read most all her books and they are very interesting and engaging with wonderful characters and settings . She ranks up there for me with Coben, Paul Dorion , and Randy Wayne white.
Do yourself a favor and read them all and you will learn about the Amish along the way . You will learn that even the ultra religious are just as full of evil as the rest of us and have the same triggers for murder as the general population

This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope There is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked!

This is one of my favorite series. This book has an interesting plot, a little history lesson. Characters continue to develop throughout the series. I’m ready for the next book
