Lyndsay Rush’s collection of poems is a very interesting read. There are certain things that are similar to humor, feelings, stories, and other things. When I read these poems it makes me feel like that some of the poems relate to someone’s day to day life. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to read this collection of poems for a review.
I received an ARC copy from NetGalley and am leaving my review voluntarily.
I used to read poetry a lot when I was younger. It was a lot of more edgy stuff about heartbreaks, which is really ironic for someone who never really had a boyfriend and had never had her heartbreak in a relationship before. But I liked to try and relate to the poems and put myself in the shoes of someone who had a boyfriend for 6 years and he still hadn’t proposed, or he cheated, or something of the like.
I stopped reading poetry like that when I started dating my current amazing boyfriend. And I haven’t really gone back to anything like that, or just poetry in general. But this ARC was sent to me and I really toyed with the idea of whether I should read it or not but I decided to, because I am really appreciative of publishers sending me books.
To start, I really liked the fact that the poems were split up by moods/feelings. So you could really read this book when you were feeling in a bubbly mood, when you were feeling energetic, or when you were feeling helpless. You didn’t have to read the love letters when all you wanted to read was secretive journals. This isn’t just a book that you read the whole thing at once and be done with it. It’s a book that you can go back to. And I love that about it.
I really don’t know if I’m the best person to rate the book because I don’t really understand the breaks in the stanzas which I feel is a very important part of reading poetry. But I did really like this because of the different categories of poems and it had depth that wasn’t just about heartbreak. If you like poetry, I recommend reading this book.
This was an impulsive borrow from NetGalley & I’m so grateful I gave it a go! I adored this collection and found the overall mood to be uplifting and joyful. Specifically aimed for women, there were themes of modern feminists focused topics which resonated with me along with the authors own view on her religious upbringing. I felt immense joy and empowerment from reading this collection. A feeling of being seen as well as permission to be true to your own self for the purpose of happiness. I loved that each section had “moods” with the title to let the reader know the vibe of the next bundle of poems. I will be buying a copy of this for my own shelves.
Lyndsay Rush’s poetry is just so stunning and moving and eerily relatable. I inhaled this collection and wanted to immediately wanted to reread my favorites as soon as I finished. I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy so I can annotate the crap out of it! Go preorder this now!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed "A Bit Much." The poems are brief, clear to understand, and able to associate with one's life.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading A Bit Much. I have never really read poetry, and I thought when I got it that it would take me awhile to get through and I would have to read it in short segments, but I found myself thinking about this book constantly and wanted to keep picking it up because I loved it so much. I found the poems relatable, many of them had parts that would make me laugh/made me emotional which I find is the mark of a good book! A couple of my favorites when reading were Things That Tastes Good as Skinny Feels, Be st Fri ends, and It’s Called Maximalism, Babe but honestly I highlighted so much more than those!! I enjoyed so many of them and I highly recommend. 5 stars
This was beautiful and I read it in one sitting. I can’t wait for it to come out so I can buy a hard copy for me and all my friends. Im really loving poetry this year.
Well that was fun! I am a poetry newbie but at the recommendation of a Bookstagrammer I follow (thanks, What Maddie Read!) I decided to give this a try. I really liked it and found it an interesting departure from fiction. I read some reviews noting this was for Millennials. As someone who is decidedly not a Millennial I didn’t feel that way to me. Even if I couldn’t identify directly with a particular poem, I still appreciated it and found most of the poems quite thought provoking and interesting. There were also many I did identify with as the themes were universal.
I loved this book and preordered a copy to add to my library when the book comes out in September. I know this is one I’ll enjoy revisiting.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley for the digital ARC to review.
I am not typically a poetry reader, but I devoured this book. It was funny, heartwarming, and relatable. I've already recommended this book to my friends, and annotated my favorite poems and excerpts.
i’ve followed lyndsay for some time on instagram (@maryoliversdrunkcousin) and was thrilled to get approved for this ARC! i absolutely loves this work of poems. “i’ll hold it for you,” “she’s a bit much,” and “have we met before?” were some of my faves. can’t wait to grab print copy once this one is out!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Lyndsay Rush for the ARC of A Bit Much. I've followed Rush's poetry on her Instagram account for years and was so excited to read her book of poems. I read this in one sitting and loved the poems (some new and some I'd seen on her Instagram). The book felt like a love letter to women becoming more comfortable in their own skin and leaning into being themselves unabashedly. It made me laugh, feel deeply, and crave a salty snack (chips, anyone?). I'm probably the target demographic (progressive millennial woman), but I highly recommend this one! I'm excited about adding a copy to my collection of poetry books.
I am a huge fan Lyndsay Rush and her instagram account @maryoliversdrunkcousin. I was excited that her witty and fun approach to poetry was coming out in book form. This is a quick read reminiscent of Kate Baer's style. Some poems worked better for me then others. But fans of Rush's instagram will enjoy!
3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 stars.
Thank you Netgalley & St. Martin's Griffin for the advanced reader copy.
I've followed @maryoliversdrunkcousin (the author's handle) on Instagram for awhile now, so I was very excited to see that some of her work had been put into a book. This delighted my elder millennial heart. There were so many things I adored about this - Some of it was because of the feels, other times it was the humor, and most often it was that she had a line that just perfectly described a feeling/situation/event. I found myself highlighting different lines and whole poems as I read because they were so great. Thanks to NetGalley for the early look at this wonderful poetry collection ahead of its September 2024 release!
First off, I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
As a Christian, I found this book disturbing and it does not align with my beliefs. The author portrayed religion as a negative stereotype and connotation.. i do NOT recommend!!
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this early!
I am 100% the target demo for this book and because of that, I enjoyed it and identified with it. The pop culture references piqued my interest and definitely appreciated the nostalgic recalls that are still top of mind for me too. That being said, if you aren't the target demo, you may not enjoy it quite as much.
This book definitely put into perspective how a lot of women feel in their 30s and acts like a good friend reminding you that you're not alone in your thoughts. Great collection of poems; would definitely pick up a finished copy once available.
A Bit Much by Lyndsay Rush
I often find it hard to rate a book of poetry, as each poem is so different. I would rate some a 5 and some much lower. With this book of poems, there were definitely some I didn't relate to, but overall it was easy to give this one a solid 4.5!
They were funny, they were relatable, they were filled with pop culture. I really enjoyed this collection, and feel like me and the author could be besties.
Through some of the poems you can see some of the struggles of the author (dad issues, issues with the church etc).,of which I didn't relate to, however as a whole collection the way she uses humor instead of bitterness in her poems was uplifting.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin's Press for the chance to review this arc. A Bit Much will be published September 17th.
First off, I got this collection of poetry from NetGalley. I have reviewed 50+ poetry collections, and this is one of the worst. As a follower of God, I cannot even give this one star. I would not recommend.
This debut book of poems is fun and unique! The poems are humorous but also relate to real life and remind me of saying that quiet part out loud.
It is hard to follow the poems back to back, so I don’t think it’s a book you read all of at one time. I see myself picking this up to read a few of the poems again each day for a laugh-hearted pick me up!
I’ve followed Lyndsay Rush for quite a while on Instagram and often find delight in her poetry when consumed via social media.
While many of these poems resonated with me as I seem to be in the same general age group as Rush, many of them felt a little too trite for a physical collection. Some observations in certain poems felt so fleeting that they may have landed better as an Instagram post.
Other poems were wonderful, like a little burst of serotonin needed on a gloomy day. I believe the mood breakdowns for each section would be so much more helpful in a physical copy and allow for a more natural “take what you need” approach to reading this book.
“A Bit Much,” more like not much. Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. I love collections of poems: I’m looking at you Sophie Diener with Someone Somewhere Maybe and Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House. This just felt so short. I read another review sharing how they view this collection of poems as Insta content and a millennial vibe and that is exactly what this is. There were no pulling emotional moments or any pieces of reflection. No thanks.
