I enjoyed this story. It taught about the way our bodies heal. The comparison between simple explanations and more serious ones made this educational for both adults and children. The illustrations by Michelle Simpson were delightfully well done.
I received a copy through Netgalley on behalf of North Star Editions, and this is my unsolicited review.
When Charlie falls off of her bike, her sister, Alex, helps her understand how her body begins the healing process. A great story that showcases a positive sibling experience and helps younger kids understand the body's healing process.
A gift of reassurance comes from this book, as two girls are out for a family bike ride but one ends up grazing their knee badly when they fall off. Older sister is on hand to check it out, reassure about clotting and scabbing up, remind about the time she had needed stitches, and inform that the best way to get a mended skin – which we're told comes easily and naturally, with the body's self-repair abilities – is to keep it clean and covered, and not allow a scab to get in the way. Finely cartoonish illustrations pin this down for the target audience, the text doesn't prove too annoying with know-all-sister browbeating her sibling, and all told if you feel you would need use of such a volume I can't see why there should be the need to shop around and find an alternative. This works very well indeed. Four and a half stars.
How We Heal teaches kids about different parts of the healing process and how it all works. The information is aided by cartoons to keep kids entertained and make the information accessible. To get to the information, kids are introduced to the concept by a relatable story about a girl riding her bike and getting a scrape. At the end of the book there is more detailed information about everything discussed in the book.

The amazing healing powers of skin! That is what this book is all about, with really cool illustrations and a fun story involving sisters, we learn how skin can heal itself with a little help from us. I would recommend this book for any kid who has scraped up a body part.
Charlie falls off her bike and scrapes her knee and her sister Alex is there to assure her that her body will heal itself. Charlie learns all about how her skin will repair itself and the steps it will take to get there.
There are clever illustrations inserted throughout the book to help children understand different parts of healing, including what happens when bloods clots. I read this with my niece and nephew and they were able to make connections to when they needed stitches.
Thank you to NetGalley and North Star Editions for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. #NetGalley #HowWeHeal
Great illustrations. A good way for kids to learn about a subject that isn't talked about in depth at their age and since kids get scrapes and cuts all the time while playing, it is a cool way for them to understand the process. My 7 year old will love this book and will likely have more questions as we read about the topic of skin healing.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
My little one enjoyed reading this book together. It tells the story of Charlie who falls while riding her bike. Charlie's sister Alex tells Charlie all the ways your skin works to heal itself and protect your body. The pictures are really cute, and it's a nice, easy, and informative read for your little ones.
Very educational story about how our skin heals after injury explains about how the blood clots and forms a scab to protect the injury during the healing process, explains about keeping it clean so the skin can form new cells and replace the damaged area.
This is a great book to help kids learn how their body works. The story was great and informative. The pictures added a lot to help with the understanding. Great informative book for kids.

I love this book and gotta give it a solid 5 stars!
It's super informative for kids.
The illustrations are gorgeous and detailed, making them easy to understand. Moreover, they are big; so the parents can explain what actually happened there (in the skin itself!) more easily to their kids.
Really, Adam Schmitt nailed the 'skin healing itself' idea so well. Using this idea combined with parent's storytelling skills, will reassure children in general not to worry if they get hurt.
A big point plus, this book is packaged using of light language. For an older children (6 yo or more), effortlessly, they can understand it well.
Love this book!
I was the kind of parent who always immediately said "You're all right!" when a kid was injured in front of me. Their stress, pain, and fear are often out of proportion to the injury. This book is cute, and it's good for kids because it explains how our bodies can take care of themselves when we are injured. You can often see that process happen almost immediately, like when the little girls in the story saw the blood clotting.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
