Although the sentiment and the illustrations were very sweet, I found the "my love" repetition very jarring and awkward. It made the very beautiful story more clunky, which stilted the impact of the message of loss and love.
the soothing motifs used by Thomas give the readers a deep understanding of the importance of the chair and the role it plays in the life of My Love .
The almost lyrical flow of the story plays into the ancient tradition of the indigenous peoples practice of passing stories from one generation to the next .
This book will undoubtedly be a valuable resource in any classroom across Canada .
This sweet book follows the relationship between a girl and her grandfather through the unique viewpoint of Grampy's chair. Inspired by her own relationship with her grandfather, the author has written a simple story showing the cycle of life. The girl is known to the chair as My Love, obviously Grampy's pet name for her. The chair watches as My Love Grows up and Grampy grows older. Eventually the roles reverse and she is taking care of him until one day Grampy is gone. Although Grampy's chair is well worn, it is merely well loved. When my love grows up, she takes the chair from storage and refurbishes it, so that it has a place of honor in her home. The text is sparse and simple, but the story demonstrates that love remains along with one's memories. This book would be a great way to explore grief with youngsters.

Such a nice read! Heartfelt and sad at times, but good overall! I feel that this would be really good to read with children.
From the use of "my love" as a pet name to the gorgeous illustrations, I love this book. The story follows the relationship between a little girl and her grandfather, told from the perspective of the grandpa's chair. I thought it was beautifully told and I think it's a great tool for parents that are trying to explain loss and healthy grieving. I will recommend to many patrons and teachers. 5 stars

Tears in my eyes as I write this review. A touching story that captures the love between this grandfather and his granddaughter told from the chair's viewpoint. Grampy's chair shared memories over the years from when "My Love" was a baby through her early teen years. Readers see the relationship grow and change but feel the love remain constant. We also see the chair put in storage for many seasons until the young woman finds it and brings it to her home. She repairs it and places it in an honor position near other pieces from her grandfather's home.
A tender look at grief and the love that remains in memories and connections with tangible objects. A comforting story for readers of all ages who may need reminders about love remaining.
This chair has seen the cycle of life and loss and renewal of hope for the future. The story shows the normalcy of grief that comes with love.
The illustrations by Coco A. Lynge are clear, colorful, and a delight.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and perfect for gifting to anyone aged 4-107, but especially to a school, church library, or your local public library!

So cute! A story about lifelong love and your very favorite spot to gives you comfort and security. The illustrations were nice and I felt like the message was beautiful!
This one hit home a dang good bit. My grandfather also had his special chair. A cozy La-Z-Boy, which I didnβt realize was so well-made until years later, when I went to buy one, myself. It was in my grandpaβs house from my earliest memories, until the house was sold off after his passing.
And thatβs what happens hereβ¦mostly.
Grampy, My Love, and Chair share many memories. Newborn cuddles, food spills, sick days, and final sick days. But after Grampy passes, Chair isnβt sold, but stored away. One day, My Love brings it home, fixes it up, and gives it a second home to make cozy and full of love.
My Love, like the author, is First Nations. It doesnβt come up in the story, but is instead present in the small detail of her earrings, which display the Mi'kmaw star.
Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.
Grab a box of tissues! This picture book is told from the perspective of Grampy's cozy armchair. The chair describes watching the main character grow up, even after Grampy has passed.
This brought back fond memories of both of my grandfathers and their favorite chairs. I think many people will be able to relate to this and enjoy sharing the memories it brings up with their loved ones.
"Grampy's Chair" by Rebecca Thomas is an absolute gem of a children's book! The story is so heartwarming and beautifully written. It's a tale that captures the essence of family, love, and cherished memories. The illustrations help bring the story to life. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a touching and delightful read that both kids and adults can enjoy together. It's truly a special book that will warm your heart!
A beautiful tale about the love between a grandfather and his granddaughter as he watches her grow up. When loss strikes, she pays him tribute by refurbishing his beloved chair to reintroduce it into her life.
I loved On the Trapline and was excited to read an advanced copy of this book. This is definitely something that I would enjoy sharing with my class. Teaching points: generations, relationships, different ways to care for someone, mementos, repurposing/repairing for sustainability.

Gentle. That was the word I kept coming back to to describe this book. A very gentle, quiet tale that reminds us of the circle of life. A gentle tribute to family and the ties that bond, as well as keeping them alive when our loved ones are gone. Told from the perspective of Grampy's chair, it follows us through the growth of the main character, known to the chair as My Love. From the days when Grampy cared for her through the days when she cared for him, we sense the bonds that bound them to their family. Make sure you take the time to look at the background as you read. You'll see several items common to the Indigenous culture. Keep an eye on that watch and My Love's earrings, too.
While the story line is sparse and understated, hence a 4.5 rounded up, perhaps necessitating some discussion with children, it's a lovely message. Memories of those we love who have passed on can be kept alive. I don't have a much loved chair but I do still have a shirt my grandfather wore, for instance, and while I treasure it too much to wear it often, the times I do bring him back to me. My Love seems to have found a similar path with a watch and that simple chair which holds so many memories. She's resourceful, too, having to work to rebuild the chair, so to speak, and, hey, the dog lover in me smiled seeing her dog curled up in the chair at the end, too. Memories past, present, and future live. This could provide many opportunities to discuss loss and memories with children. My thanks to #NetGalley and #AnnickPress for sharing this lovely prod of memories with me early. Loss is never easy but knowing we don't lose the memories is and important.
Grampy's Chair is a sweet story and I'm so happy that the young woman ended up with the chair at the end. The illustrations were wonderful. I don't understand why the child was referred to as "my love", it was a little uncomfortable. And I'm not sure many kids would really understand the concept of this picture book. It's a sweet story, but maybe more for the grown-ups reading it than the kids.
My kids absolutely adored this book! My dad reads them books in his special chair, and so they really connected with this book: the storyline was beautiful. Wonderful read!
Grampy's Chair is a sweet story about the bond between a grandpa and his granddaughter. The book follows the memories of the chair with the granddaughter growing up, grampy passing and the chair being stored away, and finally, the chair being restored and given a place in the home. The illustrations are also nice.
Grampyβs Chair is a story about a little girl and her grandpa, and his favourite chair. I knew this would be a bittersweet book going in, and it really was. It was touching to see the moments of the little girl and her grandpa together, even though you knew how it would end.
It was distracting personally that βMy loveβ and βThe Chairβ were capitalized. It made it a bit confusing about what perspective this book was being told from.
Overall this is a very heartwarming book and would be great for helping children understand death.
Grampy's Chair is a touching story that adults will appreciate even more than children. The personal recollections of the author shine through. Anyone who had a close relationship with a grandparent can relate.
This is a sweet story that looks at the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter through the perspective of a chair. I love that! I love the representation as well.
The main character, known by the chair as My Love, grows up with her grandpa's chair. But when he dies, the well-worn chair goes into storage. Until years later, when a now young-adult My Love restores it and puts it in her home. It's the beautiful idea of holding onto memories and keeping them alive, and it reminds me a lot of my own Grandpa's chair.
The text, however, felt a tiny bit hollow to me. The story itself is very short and somewhat undescriptive, so I would love to see it deepen and have a bit more detail!
Very cute book overall.
This is such a heartwarming story. It kind of reminds me of a modern version of Brave little toaster but the sentiment here is a lovely relationship with a girl and her grampy. She always felt loved and supported by him. What a wonderful way for the author to honor her grandpa!
